They work with Linux. To the OS and BIOS it is a 1TB drive.

The solid state storage part is handled by the HDD itself so it is not OS dependent, and it works by taking some of the most used data and storing it on the flash memory to compensate for the delay of moving the read/write head.

A hard drive cannot saturate the 375MB bandwidth of sata 2, and an ssd provides vastly superior 4k R/W. There is literally no reason not to put an ssd in a current PS4 other than "b-but it`s not going as fast as it could!"

I use computers every day for actual work... I maintain databases (some of which reside on SQL server workstations, not servers) and I also develop ETL's. None of which is gaming.
Gamers are pretty insignificant other a little extra margin than you get from a 'regular' PC.
