delete key deletes the character behind, backspace deletes forward. it's actually really useful once you learn how to use it (given that you actually type on a regular basis)
home and end take you to the front and end of the line you're typing on. Also quite useful.

The delete key is useful in a few games and software. Scroll up/down is useful in a few situations as well. Anything else is free hotkeys. If you don't use them, then why not rebind them to something more useful? I use scroll lock to mute my volume.

Backspace erases text behind the cursor, delete erases text in front of the cursor. (Behind = left, front = right)

By the same token, what can backspace do that delete can't? There's more than one way to use a keyboard. Some people are more comfortable with one than the other. For example, due to jobs involving a LOT of math, very quickly, I'm way faster at entering numbers with the numpad than the number row. I use shift+ins for pasting, especially when keystrokes like ctrl+c closes a window in some WMs and sends a terminate signal in command line programs, so I moved away from the ctrl+c,v,x,z for copy, pasta, cut and undo
