I just write "I cannot read chinese, so I want to install custom ROM." It got unlock in like half an hour

Are you using the normal ROM? You need to use the developer ROM for the unlocker to work.

I am currently using the global stable ROM
I was under the impression that unlocking works on any of the ROMs as I believe that was in the Xiaomi thread

Yes, I had the same problem to till I change my ROM to the developer one. It has something to do with one option in developer options not available in normal rom

The Apple of Asia. Seriously though, they have a big problem with resellers putting modified ROMs with spyware (that's non-Chinese government approved, of course) and even Gapps on their phones and selling them in the west. It's perfectly understandable. At least this way they don't make themselves accountable for credit card fraud or whatever else.
