I do, yes. Thank you for asking.
Trying out different distros, mostly. I used to be a rampant hopper--well I still am, I guess--until I told myself to just create a VM. The same thing happens in a VM that would've happened if I'd installed the distro on metal: I get bored after a day and want to try something else.
So what stupid things have I done with VirtualBox? Enabled my own mental illness, for one.
No, I use VMWare Workstation though.
i used to but recently i switched to Parallels
Looks good. What is it exactly?
Yeah, I use it in conjunction with Vagrant for provisioning most of my professional work/clients.
>had dual boot windows and GNU/Linux
>run virtualbox on linux
>tried to start my Windows Partition as a VM
>didnt work
like vbox but for os x only and theres a little coherence thingy
Many moons ago, I used virtual box to ease my transition to Linux. Now I don't need it anymore.
I used to use virtualbox but these days I just RDP into my windows server.
It's for photoshop and office
>using virtualbox over vmware
vomit inducing
>using virtual box or vmware over QEMU
kys you're selves
can someone post some funky .exes i can run in a vm
im bored
I'm addicted to OSes.
>Arch Hurd
lel
How does that work (Setting up Windows server, "RDP-ing")?
>11 OS's in total
Absolute madman
>Does user use VirtualBox?
Absolutely not. VirtualBox is deprecated bullshit software. QEMU is where it is at today. Of course, VMWare is good too, but proprietary and I found QEMU with virt-manager and libvirt really fucking good so no need. For enterprise, VMWare is obviously much more feasible. However for one single Windows VM for games with GPU passthrough? QEMU/kvm any day of the week.
What do I do with my VM? Play intense video games that has problems in Wine (DX11 and very performance depending games) and use Microshit software like Visual Studio that doesn't work in GNU/Linux because Nutella wants to keep their marketshare.
to test my shit
be it powershell scripts
or my linux python stuff
or just to find out what some distro has
Nigga, how's Photoshop on a windows sever? Are you literally running 'Windows Server' or is it just Windows Pro etc?
GPU Acceleration etc? All working nicely? Colour profiling?
I do.
Right now, I have Peppermint OS on a VM just to play around with it. I also plan on installing Windows 7 onto a VM for gaymen and FL Studio shenanigans.
i am on i3
we had serious issues with virtualbox on i3 since the switch to Qt5 for gui
I had plenty of time to try and play around with QEMU and VMWare
sorry, but both were inferior in speed, responsiveness, variety of customizablity and reliability
but enjoy what works for ya, but try to not be pajeet moron that you are who parrots this shit about being deprecated
>not using KVM
fucking pleb
Enable RDP, lock windows and install Remmina on Linux.
Enjoy dedicated windows hardware for photoshop
It also has clipboard and file share so you don't have to touch the windows machine too
...
Yes.
Use it with Windows 10 or Linux as host.
My work VM's consist of several Windows 7 machines.
I also try some distros here and there for fun.
>win 8.1 pro (x86)
For what purpose?
>but try to not be pajeet
Can we build a wall and Make Sup Forums Great Again?
no, get out you shitskin nigger
>powering off VMs
>powerring off VMs

I use vagrant and vagrant uses VirtualBox.
>madman
its called madmen you poo in loo
After using VMware I can't use virtualbox.
nope, qemu+KVM at home, xen and vmware at work
To test someones Twitter Phishing tool that doesn't work.
Is there a GUI manager for QEMU?
Could you post a screenshot?
I've configured my kernel for full QEMU support (including GPU passthrough) but can't be bothered to figure out if there's GUI for that thing and move from virtual box.
Virt-manager is the GUI for QEMU/kvm. It uses libvirt.
You might need to edit some stuff manually for GPU pass since not all settings are "GUI'fied". That's done through virsh (which is part of libvirt). So just create your VM using virt-manager, configure it in the GUI and edit the XML using "virsh edit [VMName]" in a terminal for certain passthrough settings like getting rid of Code 43 if you're using NVIDIA or CPU pinning.
Here's a screenshot of it in action.
I use it. Because I'm doing some course and I have to do this thing where I have to teach people how to use virtual machines for basic networking and stuff like installing loonix distros.
why 2 browsers ?
I once bootstrapped a LFS VM install off a Slackware VM.
The person he called madman is one person, not multiple people you fucking nerd. Le meme somewhere else faggot
down syndrome much?
vmware is literally the best out of all
you probably are a real down syndrome retard who screams "botnet" as a response
I usually use Parallels Workstation 2.2.2222 as my VM but I tried VirtualBox a few months ago. I was surprised at how similar it was to PW in regards to speed, size, and ease of use. I also really like how VirtualBox handled the mouse and keyboard compared to PW. I will most likely switch to VMWare since I don't like how PW is one of the few pirated programs left on my machine.
I use a VM for game botting, restoring untouched registry data, code testing, installing malware, and my inevitable future Firefox update.
>subhuman virtualbox user
Probably to hijack solitaire's dlls.
Just one for occasional work
Thanks for this, user.
Is there a way to use QEMU over a network (connecting to the IP of the vmserver ), possibly through virtmanager?
Like QEMU using a network that allows you to connect to it?
If you go into Edit -> Connection Details in virt-manager you'll find settings for virtualized networking and network interfaces. You might find what you're looking for there.
You can use virt-manager over SSH with x11 forwarding. Obviously you can also just ssh to the hypervisor and use the command line interface.
I used to, but I switched to VMware because it works better for my needs. I'm trying to learn active directory for a job and Vbox would be raping my laptop's shitty i3 right now with 3 Windows VMs running. Two copies of Server 2012 R2 and one copy of Server 2003.
I use it with vagrant to create development VMs
Man you must have no life at all, to have that many OSs to fiddle with lol
Man you must have no brain at all, to make such a retarded shitpost. "lol"
yarr harr fiddle-dee-dee
being a neet is alright to be
do what you want 'cause the neet life is free
you are a faggot
can user use exact audio copy in vbox
We use it extensively at work, by way of vagrant. Continuous integration uses vagrant to test every commit and all our devs use it for local testing.
Production isn't in virtualbox though.
I use vmware esxi at home too, mostly for shits n gigs.
the entire point of vms is that you can have dozens of them without taking up any more resources than they need to, and provide an isolated environment for testing perfection. hurr
literally keked
Sorry for the dumb question, but what is RDP and where do I find it?
Remote Desktop Protocol. If you're on loonix, remmina is a good client to use to RDP into Windows machines. If you're on Windows, it has a built in way to use RDP.
Thanks, user
I have seven atm
>download VirtualBox
>2d and 3d performance is so shit
I have a fucking AMD Radeon RX 480 with and AMD six core processor and yet can only use like 128MB video memory in Virtualcumbox settings
It works great and is easily automated.
I don't get the hate, other than from salty liberal VMWare cucks who are worried about their jobs.
it's not for gay men
Top kek
Actually successfully did my gpu passthrough, just trying to get audio to not sound like shit and other than thats its pretty nice
What's a decent virtualization software for GNU/Linux ?
kvm
With GUI?
>Is there a way to use QEMU over a network (connecting to the IP of the vmserver ), possibly through virtmanager?
You just set up a new connection in virt-manager and connect to it from there, if that's what you mean.
Note: This connects to the hypervisor, not to a vm. Just ssh to the vm for that shit.
Libvirt
Post build
>Libvirt
That's just API.
I'm on debian, and I need something that can boot ISOs directly or boot USB flash drive.
rip :'(
>Does user use VirtualBox?
Yes
>If yes, for which purpose?
Testing how multiple servers react with each other using loopbacks. It simulates servers at different geographic locations.
>Show your VMs
No.
>Stupid things user did with VirtualBox?
I installed Gentoo.
GNOME boxes
I can't use my webcam for some reason. extension pack is installed.
host: win8 64bit
vm: ubuntu 64bit lts 16.04
laptop: aspire v5-573G
Any idea how I can get it to work?
I use VirtualBox for OSs VMware doesn't support, like Win1.0, 3.1, ReactOS, Androidx86
Does it appear on the connected devices list? can you use it in your host OS?
>Just trying to get the sound to not sound like shit.
Here's a few protips:
>Use libvirt/virt-manager
While I liked using the commandline and a script, it had huge implications for performance. For some reason, using virt-manager and libvirt helped with the performance significantly. Plus it has some features like the one below.
>Use CPU pinning.
I researched this pretty intensively and this was the huge thing that solved it for me and another person I helped get this up and running on.
It is done by adding this to your "virsh edit [NameOfVM]" in the terminal:
Remove as many VCPUs (threads) as you want. Personally I have a 6-core 5820K so I have 8 VCPUs (4 cores, 2 threads) pinned while using the VM as shown in the example.
>Remove all shit you don't need.
Remove bullshit like other graphical inputs, USBs, DVD/CD drives, channels and such. Example of what I have on mine here: >Getting sound without SPICE servers
On the top of the virsh edit [NameOfVM] there's a domain name field. Edit this to:
Now add:
Near the bottom for Pulse.
ok so:
>lsmod shows a lot of modules, cant identify what my webcams name is
>modprobe for activation of modules doesnt work anyway btw I tired with some module
>extension pack is installed but Virtual Box cant start if I use anything but 1.1 USB. I get an error right at the start
>webcam gets recognized on the USB list though and I added it
>lsusb doesnt show it in ubuntu though
it works perfect in win8. and no its not deactivated by FN keys or so
>GNOME boxes
>GNOME
I'm using XFCE.
Do you also have down syndrome?
I don't think so, he doesn't use GNOME.
Might as well add. The reason why your sound is shit is because of DPC latency. Windows is having trouble solving drivers' tasks in time which means other important tasks are getting delayed and thus the sound processing is delayed and makes garbled sounds. A game that often makes the garbled sound is Victoria 2 by Paradox. I don't exactly recommend buying it if you don't have it already, but if you do, it will be an easy indicator whether or not you have solved the problem.
So getting rid of extra devices (more devices == more drivers) and setting the CPU pinning so that the VM can better utilize the CPU is what solves it as Windows can faster process the driver requests and has less drivers to fuck with. Might as well also recommend to debloat Windows 10 using the Windows 10 debloating scripts. The less bloat running in the background, the better.
Also, if your VM sometimes is stuck on shutting down, enable MSI on your passed HDMI audio. There's a thread about it on Guru3D that has a script and a program that can automatically do that.
Have you seen those dependencies?
Also boxes is lacking a lot.
And who uses GNOME? You either go for XFCE,MATE or KDE.
I believe he meant virt-manager when he said libvirt. It is pretty much the only and best GUI for QEMU/kvm.
>virt-manager
archlinux.org
Will pacman resolve dependencies and install Qemu/KMV as well?
And what are the minimum requirement for the hardware?
I'm on Thinkpad T420 here.
If you look at the dependencies it requires libvirt, which in turn requires QEMU/kvm.
What's your favoutire?
I use it occasionally to play with Oracle database developer images. It's fun.
Oh thanks man, also i have 2x xeons with 16 threads in total, i cant really tell which ones are the physical cores to pin properly, also what about hugepages does that do a fuckton in help? Im doing a usb passthrough of my headset i heard passing through the entire usb controller helps get rid of the scratchy audio (if i had more than 2 usbs). Which is why i thought about buying a usb card. Also already using virtmanager/libvirt because virsh is amazing. I got rid of the spice server as it did cause some weird stuff to the display at some points
Physical or screenfetch?
Have you installed the VirtualBox extension pack? Also, make sure you have the right VirtualBox installed, 32bit version for 32bit machines, 64bit for 64bit machines. With the extension pack you can do USB2.0 and 3.0 and more
> 2x xeons with 16 threads in total, i cant really tell which ones are the physical cores to pin properly
In that case you can just copy paste the cputune section I posted previously. It'll give you 4 physical cores and 2 threads. If you want more, just add more vcpupins beyond 7 like
>what about hugepages does that do a fuckton in help?
Yes, hugepages will help because it'll reserve a chunk of the memory for the VM with larger page files. This way the CPU will have less pagefaults where it would need to look up the page again. Generally hugepages is recommended for performance all around. However I personally don't have it enabled and it works great for me with just ballooning it.
>Im doing a usb passthrough of my headset i heard passing through the entire usb controller helps get rid of the scratchy audio (if i had more than 2 usbs).
Maybe. It would allow for more direct access so it might help. Though I don't think that's necessary.
I did cpu pinning originally and had 8 cores locked in place, just didnt know if they were physical cores or not that i was pinning.
In your setup does that allow pulse audio to act as windows' audio without me having to pass a usb card/or headset? If so I'll definitely try that, audio and disk io seem to be the worst things for me atm (windows runs fine until i start downloading a game etc and the disk usage goes up which locks up windows) and i dont have virtio scsi for some reason
