Twitch's new ad system discussion / criticism

So lately, several big streamers have been using SureStream, the new ad system that is supposedly unblockable (for now). ABP, uBlock Origin, etc... don't do shit against it.

The only workaround right now is to turn the HTML5 player off and revert to Flash, which puts you back on the old ad system, but it's only a matter of time before they remove Flash support entirely. And some people report that the HTML5 player sometimes immediately toggles back on, so they can't use this exploit.

And yet some other people seem to have their adblockers working while others don't, while using the same filters, on the HTML5 player. I'm one of those lucky few, but I don't know for how long.

The problem is that this ad system seems to be broken to all hell, playing either too many ads or ads at random times. Or it's intentional and Twitch is denying full access to content unless you pay up for Twitch Prime. Just go to any big channel and you'll have people complaining about missing key parts of the stream because of ads that are clearly not commercial breaks.

People actually wouldn't mind the ads if they were as they'd advertised. But they're loud as shit, are prone to freezing the stream (after which you get more ads if you refresh) and basically turn Twitch into a free to play experience.

i don't see any ads though

>watching nerds, dudebros and whores "playing" games
stop

youtube-dl doesn't have this problem

This, fuck off

>Using Twitch
Fuck off back to Sup Forums

Use Livestream + Chatty. It's way better.

I have Amazon Prime so I don't see Twitch ads.
Easy.

Started using livestreamer with its third party twitch gui + vlc, since flash would make even my i7 go supernova. Literally never saw a single ad since then. Only issue is vlc crashes if some other software takes over fullscreen (kinda annoying since I dual monitor), but running them windowed borderless/fullscreen windowed fixes the issue. Also dat 1% cpu usage

>vlc

Yeah yeah I know. But it's the only one that doesn't shit the bed with livestreamer

mpv works fine with Livestreamer.

>mpv
>working fine
>ever

Facecams and eceleb shit killed game streaming anyway, so you might as well just stop watching twitch at all.

...

I might try that (with Streamlink instead of Livestreamer though, it's an updated fork) since even the HTML5 player seems to use way too many resources.

Oddly enough, the older HTML5 player when it was still in beta didn't use that much, but the version now uses almost as much as Flash.

Really considering using Streamlink + Livestreamer GUI + VLC full time.

Not familiar with streamlink, but personally now I only use the twitch website to watch the occasional saved recording (for now at least. The moment livestreamer supports these I'll ditch the website entirely)

I may be retarded, but Livestreamer doesn't work for me anymore, it gives a "400 Client Error: Bad Request"
What am I doing wrong?

Not him, but I pretty much use mpv exclusively with livestreamer because it's simple and lightweight, and I never had problems.

Livestreamer? I had that happen, but with the gui. It's a known issue, since twitch modified the api, and it's the reason now the gui requires a twitch account login. Make sure it's updated and you're logged in (from the gui, search its menus for the link, not at home and I can't remember the exact button)

>twitch
get a load of this cuck

I've never seen an ad on Twitch w/ uBO, even to this day. SureStream is a fucking meme.

i get them but only rarely. i don't really get it. it's always twitch ads (amazon coins or twitch 'features').

yeah I solved it. Just needed to put a line in Livestreamer config file

I don't get why some have none and others loads.

imaqtpie spams ads and I've seen people there with uBO complain about getting 7 ads in a row.

Funny you say that. I'm watching him right now and all he does is spam fucking ads all day.

Yep, he's a greedy bastard, especially since Twitch is giving people 50% more ad revenue for a while. He clearly needs more money with the millions he's already making a year.

I'm glad that (so far) I haven't seen a single one of those shitty ads.

Never saw the appeal of memesters honestly. Then again I prefer more chill streams, these days have been watching either random people running xcom or civ, or modmaking.

Streamlink is livestreamer with bugfixes and more supported sites. it uses all the same commands at the moment. livestreamer hasn't been updated in a year.

I don't blame the guy. He admitted in an interview he made 2 million last year. Definitely going to be more this year. At least he isn't a flaming fucking faggot like nightblue and other streamers. He knows the twitch community are all brain dead retards and chooses to exploit them.

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind. But for now I have no need to fix what isn't broken.

imaqtpie:

- Loads of subs
- Loads of donations
- Runs many ads, since he regularly has close to 30k viewers this is more than pocket change
- Makes sure to run them so they will at times block content, to make more people sub or get Twitch Prime (both of which give him money)
- Most of chat is super envious/jealous that he's living the life they all wish they could (money, own house, gf, etc...) yet they keep giving him money
- Probably spends most of his time off-stream laughing at how stupid people are to give him his lifestyle

No one cares

>twitch

You can really tell who the /r9k/ members are in this thread. Go back to your containment board now.

100% true. Like I said. He knows what he's doing.

>anything i don't like is r9k cancer
Thanks for the (You) anyway.

What's really irritating is that Twitch is well aware of the issues (load ads, ads that freeze the stream, too many ads, ads playing at random), yet the only answer they give is to get Twitch Prime.

They have no intention of fixing any of the "bugs", it's all just a money-grab.

If you want watching whores, just go to pornhub. If you want play games, play games. If you want watch something, watch Matthias Wandel on youtube.

>2017-38 days
>not having Amazing Prime, and by extension, Twitch Prime

its not twitch. i been seeing ads on youtube too. i have ublock origins and a host file that blocks ads

You know if this thing "SureStream" is successful, it will go mainstream and it'll be everywhere.
So I don't see why are you being ignorant.

what % of your paycheck do you guys donate to your favorite streamers every month?

I myself donate about 16% ($400)

Wtf I hate twitch now

$0

Big streamers don't need it and small streamers aren't partnered. Not even using my free prime sub.

There are plenty of smaller streamers (100-200 average views) that are partnered and make hardly any money off ads.

They like getting subs, donations or cheers the most and barely run ads because it only literally makes them pennies. A smaller streamer I watch has lately been making hundreds of dollars off cheers that he never did before.

>You know if this thing "SureStream" is successful, it will go mainstream and it'll be everywhere.
this

And if it does go mainstream, this means you won't get full content without paying to go ad-free.

Have fun watching anything in the future, on any video site, without having key parts chopped out and replaced by ads.

>You know if this thing "SureStream" is successful, it will go mainstream and it'll be everywhere.
If "everywhere" starts using it then smart people will dedicate time to making a workaround.

Same

We wuz Prime kangz

just connect your amazon prime account with your twitch account and you won't see any ads. problem solved

>paying to watch someone else play games

>twitch

that's why everyone has to drop twitch and set a precedent that integrating ads kills the business

>Implying that most of the NEETs watching actually have Amazon Prime

The problem is the new system overwrites the stream with ads. There's no blocking it with filter lists, or any other way. Some people have said that even via Livestreamer you will still get ads.

Anyone on the HTML5 player that claim their ad block works is wrong, SureStream just hasn't rolled out to their region yet, so they're still on the old system even with HTML5. The old Flash player still uses the old ad system no matter the region, but it's only a matter of time before that's phased out.

The only workaround I can think of is for ad blockers to somehow spoof the user having a Prime account, so that they get skipped for SureStream. But I really doubt the legality of something like that. So it looks like Twitch wins, and soon this cancer will spread to YouTube and every single video source on the internet. RIP ad blockers, at least when it comes to video.

>watch Matthias Wandel on youtube.
true youtube kino

however i disagree with you. i dont think there is anything wrong watching a tournament, or a professional player explaining what he does while playing.
