Post-Snowden/Prism world

Im a typical Windows 10 user, what is the best I can do for my main internet uses...browsing, file sharing, email, skyping, searching, etc to protect my privacy, fixing my O/S to being less intrusive

Hardmode: I cant switch from windows.

Turn off the computer.

>cant switch from windows.
/thread

install gentoo

Not everyone can switch out of their O/S

Nothing short of that?

Bump

Use windows in a VM

those are some weird "stock photos" lad

>Browsing
Tor Browser
>File sharing
Encrypt the file with an open source programme then send it through any file sharing service you like
>Skyping
No idea
>Searching
Duckduckgo

>Windows 10
>skyping
>protect my privacy
It's really not looking good for you OP
Just embrace the botnet

>I cant switch from windows.
why?
and remember: games are not a reason

You have backdoors integrated into the OS, look for how to turn off that first. I don't have the links thou but one of such tweaks explained that you must turn off updates, no exceptions.

Also set up a web accelerator, a proxy that caches all internet traffic for you to reuse. Not sure if Squid works on windows but that one is good.

Even if you are hardheaded I advice you to get a Linux box from where to pass all traffic, there is really no many choices.

OP, why do you "need" windows?

...

Thank you - encryption program?

DDG is confirmed not cooperating with Prism?

Let's presume its not games, then (its not). It's work. Business apps and Adobe apps. Let's not make it about the premise, presume I cant change O/S (I cant).

Oh?

Sounds like I have to use another O/S?

QUBES BUT MODERN CHIPSETS ARE ALL BOTNET AT HARDWARE LEVEL

Just write OS

majorgeeks.com/files/details/destroy_windows_10_spying.html

This will disable all spying. This will also disable updates and you cannot get it back, but if you are that worried about them spying on you, you shouldn't be updating anyways.

Install Solus

Thank you

>Linux box from where to pass all traffic

Can you elaborate?

>backdoors integrated into the OS

If any one has a list of these..

>web accelerator, a proxy that caches all internet traffic for you to reuse

Windows version?

Ok, OS. :)

QUBES?

Thank you

Is that an OS?

Didn't they say they ended bulk data collection. I know it's naive to believe that but what anything scaled back post Snowden? Should we still be all cover your camera and install Linux and use tor?

Have you even tried running them through wine, let alone reading up on if they work? Additionally, try playonlinux, which sure, uses wine, but installs things with correct configurations.

No and no. Well, you should install linux anyway, if you can. It's better at all but video games. But hey, you can play all kinds of stuff on linux right now. Including green marshmallow spacemen.

>
> It's better at all but video games.
What about music production?

Good question. It has audacity, that much is for sure. Have you tried Ardour or LMMS?

wait, are you talking about your personal computer or your computer at work ?

how are they not a reason? they make up most of the time a lot of people spend on their computer

>Encryption program
Veracrypt. Or just use 7zip to compress a file with password encryption.

>Hardmode: I cant switch from windows.

You mean: "Nightmare mode", right?

Kevin, stop it!

Okay, fine let's explore Linux a bit...

How hard is it to "dual boot" so if I want to do internet things I do one, for work I do the other?

Is that the basic suggestion here?

If so, I install Linux?

But, am I jaded? What makes Linux so much more special than windows? Certainly if you guys know about Linux, so does the NSA.

where are you getting these

seconding this.

Is it a fresh install and you can afford to wipe the drive and repartition? Fairly easy.

Do you have two different drives you can use? Super easy.

Linux isn't closed source, for starters. It also isn't based off of ancient and poorly-designed.

>How hard is it to "dual boot"

incredibly easy. shrink partition in Windows first, the install Linux to the free space you just cleared up

>Dual boot
Pretty easy, provided you install Linux and Windows on the same physical drive. Things can get a little tricky if you install Linux on a separate physical drive.

>NSA
Exploits in Linux get patched by the community over time. If Microsoft had built a backdoor into Windows it will never get patched.

A ''safer os'' is just a meme, if the NSA wants to spy on you or other hackers they can get down to the hardware level.

once you grow up and get a live you'll figure it out

>dual boot
we've had iommu for ~10 years now.. dual booting is outdated as fuck

yeah I'm not saying vidya4life but you can't ask people to give up their main hobby (if it can even be considered an hobby)

>YFW ONLY OLD CHIPSETS CAN DISABLE MANAGEMENT ENGINE
>YFW ONLY NEW CHIPSETS HAVE IOMMU

CANT WIN

MIGHT AS WELL JUST INSTALL BONZIBUDDY ON WINDOWS XP AND BEND OVER

David Dubnitskiy. My new favourite photographer. All those cuties, hnnnng.

Home Office (Im a busy marketing/sales consultant I deal with a lot of consultants (us and abroad), I use adobe mainly to quality check their work), and other MS apps for business use.

"Why do you care"? I watched Snowden's recent interview and he compelled me. Especially his "you dont say you dont care about free speech because you dont have anything to say"...etc.

"how did you get here?"

I surf the chans since they began, actually before there's quite a few "non-Sup Forums" chans even before Sup Forums, now there are even more...but, obviously Sup Forums is the most popular english speaking one.

Love the anonymous and freedom loving culture. Feels like the "wild west" of the internet, much like a lot of it felt in forums before mass commercialization ramped up.

Not an issue, I can get another drive, etc.

I have storage drives, os drives, let's presume hardware is not an obstacle.

>if you guys know about Linux, so does the NSA

"security by obscurity" never works. If something is considered secure, it's known. Doesn't make it any less secure.

>What makes Linux so much more special than windows?

Well, windows and Linux were both different in the past:

Windows had DOS, where you could a lot of stuff you could do in Linux.
Linux on the other hand was more "hardcore", you ahd to do everythign yourself (i.e. mounting the CD-drive).

But that was long ago. Windows decided to shrink it's shell capabilities, to "guide" the user. Linux decided to learn from Win and iOS and came up with pretty good graphical user interfaces.

Nowadays you can also have a "just werks" linux without having to touch anything that isn't a multi-colored icon.

BUT this is only an interface for the underlying shell, and while using linux you will learn to use the shell. It starts slowly, but the deeper you go down the rabbit hole, the more fun.

Get a small SSD, check /csg/, then enjoy buttery smooth sub-10 second boots into linux. Depending on how fast your motherboard is at booting, this might even include the time it takes to post.

>get a live

I definitely don't have desire or time for that.

Maybe I should just revert to my "nightmare mode" premise of windows.

Okay, can you point me in a direction to use that? I googled it doesnt come up as an app

>theintercept.com/2015/11/12/edward-snowden-explains-how-to-reclaim-your-privacy/

>/csg/
>HARDWARE FROM CHINA

ENJOY UR CHINKNET

WHY DO YOU THINK CRITICAL MILITARY HARDWARE IS NEVER OUTSOURCED

>adata can be found in shelves in first world countries
>these SSDs have to conform to the same standards as anything else
>if there somehow is telemetry coming from them, it's not going to be sent through your computer
>being worried about some chink potentially sitting outside of your house with a huge-ass antenna to listen in on your 1's and 0's for no discernable reason, assuming there are bugs like that in it to begin with

it's so incredibly unfeasable that the threat level simply isn't there

maybe if you're a celebrity or presidential candidate, maybe, but then you won't be on /csg/

feel free to present a reasonable vector though

>I definitely don't have desire or time for that.

You don't understand:

Erase everything, install a beginenr-freindly distro.. It's just as simple as using Windows.

So what so you do if you have some problem in windows? You google it, press some buttons and fix it.
And in Linux? You ggole it, type (or copy) some commandy and fix it.

You don't need more time for Linux as for Windows.

And if you are all about secure, google "linux hardening". It's really not that hard.

BADUSB AND OTHER FIRMWARE LIVING VARIANTS

>don't have time for that
Do you have time for your windows computer shitting itself with updates you didn't chose to install? Getting viruses? Having the boot sector corrupted? Those things don't happen or are easy to fix under linux.

That image is representative of advanced users. My father, 50 years of age, recently switched to Ubuntu and finds it much more comfortable.

moar

Won't let me post.

Those rely on a poorly configured mac/windows computer, though?

And how does badusb have anything to do with a SATA drive?

thanks

I have another SSD

Which Linux or whatever should I use (I wont be enjoying the OS as a puzzle).

Also, should I be able to hide my dual boot screen?

SATA DRIVES HAVE CONTROLLERS

PROPERLY CONFIGURED ARE STILL EXPLOITABLE

and -one- exploit that could feasibly be done with this is?

Makes sense.

Which Linux? There are many Im seeing in google.

don't have anything to hide
seriously, just do normal fag stuff and it doesn't matter

BADUSB, AND THATS AN OLD ONE

Manjaro or Ubuntu. Manjaro allows you to more easily install more software, and enjoys a great deal of support due to it being based on Arch. Ubuntu enjoys an even greater deal of support due to it generally being a "beginners linux". It is a lot more "stable", in practice meaning it runs on older software and gets updates less often. Get the "LTS"; long term support version, which won't change radically for several years and has the most support. Probably go for Ubuntu if you have zero desire to learn anything and possibly have to face wanting to switch to Manjaro later.

Consider looking at different ubuntu flavors. lubuntu for instance.

Do you genuinely not understand what you're talking about or are you trying to be humorous?

CONTROLLERS CONTAINING FLASH MEMORY CHIPS CAN CONTAIN ANY PAYLOAD, BADUSB IS A VARIANT OF BADBIOS

No, actually this is how I used to think. But, watching Snowden's interview here (below) completely changed my mind. It's mine to choose to give away, it's a matter of freedom. And even protecting freedom of others. Yes, I know, high concept stuff ;) Not that any surveillance is bad, but that mass surveillance as a strategy is. His discussion about how mass surveillance never actually leads to protection, but only targeted surveillance does was the biggest eye opener. The surveillance is for other purposes that can be summed as power and influence, and that should not be given without due process (like an election!).

Which I kind of got to accidentally as I am a close follower of politics...yes, I know super boring :)

Explain to me like I'm a rubber duck- how does this in a real-life scenario threaten OP?

CHINKSHIT SSD LOADS A ROOTKIT FROM ITS SATA CONTROLLER

What you think is acceptable today may not be acceptable tmr.

Thank you - and I guess I dont need to say it, Im not broke.

I can pay for better alternatives if they are out there

I see a lot of "and its FREE!" in my experience, that usually (likely) comes with a quality compromise.

No, like I'm a rubber duck. You said something about rootkits. When would it load a rootkit? How?

I'LL TELL YOU LATER

Absolutely not. I could have gone for a mac when I started my development course, but declined, opting for linux. At times, it was trying, but in the end I ended up understanding everything much better than everyone else who just copied what the teacher told them to type into the terminal.

You know, if you try to make a joke and you flub it, it's much better to just say that.

PLUG MORE CHINK THINGS INTO YOUR LABTOP

>OP wants privacy
>with fucking windows 10
>OP needs windows because of work
>linux zealots try to convert OP to linux anyway
lmao

:)

Well it kind of seems like I went to the "linux forum asking for a windows solution", so I noted the windows solutions, and I'm open to another OS in theory, I want to have the information in case I feel like going that route.

Get a browser that prohibits fingerprinting, or get a ton of anti-fingerprinting addons for your current browser. Also get adblocking and script blocking addons.
Learn how to configure adobe flash to not display your OS info (google it).
Pay for a VPN service that supports OpenVPN.
Get a firewall and make very restrictive rules; most system applications do not need access to the internet. Block windows update's internet access until you want to update.
Get veracrypt, make an encrypted drive with a good password and keyfiles, and store your sensitive docs on it. Backup your keyfiles somewhere, but keep them with thousands of other files. Don't even use bitlocker or anythings microsoft pushes for drive encryption.
Use PrivaZer, but download a version 3.0.5 or prior so you can clear your folderview history (shellbags) of drives that no longer exist (i.e. veracrypt drives unmounted). The donor version of the newer one supports clearing all shellbags history apparently.

All of this is pointless if you connect your real life with this shit. You probably aren't intelligent enough to setup your own email server so you have to rely on other services.

Windows 10 is spyware to the core so even if you apply Pajeet's deodexed w10 privacy patch and turn some things off in Windows they won't do shit.

Linux is a good option but if you need Windows for your workflow then don't even bother, W7 or maybe W8 with updates disabled to avoid porting back the spyware shit are the only choices.

LIKE THE POLAR BEARS

That filthy whore. I love it.

this kind of environmentally friendly bullshit should be illegal its uinsafe and unstable and whoever doe it should be locked in prison for attempted manslaughter

for the nth time, in linux you use several pieces of software to achieve industrial level quality, not just one program for a jack of all trades

As Snowden said, you should try.

But we do need open source hardware.

Yes

Buy IT support from Canonical. They are the maintainers from Ubuntu and provide better support than Microsoft does with windows.
