Can I run mpd on a server in a basement and have a mobile client on my phone stream from it and control playback? Are there any with a decent UI (I'm personally a fan of directory trees and I know most mpd clients aren't that great at directory trees)
Can I have a tiny computer hooked up to my speakers that streams from mpd and just has a few buttons on a panel for play/pause/stop/next/previous and a tiny display to scroll track info?

Streaming is more convenient for sure if you are checking something out. I guess it just comes down to personal preference, I don't like to depend on others on a fundamental level so I guess that influences having all my mp3 files on my own storage

Spotify is all you need. Windows Media Player for media files here and there.

Photos plays GIF files now. Movies & TV does a good job of videos, I believe. If not you can just default to Windows Media Player. Or AT MOST install VLC if you watch movies/videos a lot.

Really no point in anything else. Maybe iTunes if you have an Apple device and/or subscribe to their ecosystem. Ehh. Streaming is better anyways. Google Play Music is pretty good on Android, but sucks on desktop. It's great if you want to upload your 50,000 songs to it and listen anywhere. As in if you're a Jew that torrents. But other than that... Spotify it is.

Thank God for streaming. I'd have a bunch of songs on my computer. I'd keep them because I had no choice. Sometimes I'd listen to a song and get bored of it, but then want to come back to it because of nostalgia, but then I had to get it again or just keep it indefinitely. Streaming makes it perfect, I love it.

Until I want to listen to a whole album at once in sequence then Spotify is garbage

Photos is MUCH better than Windows Photo Viewer. Night and day. You can even edit within it with ease. I gave it a choice and I'm never switching back, but I have Windows 10 Anniversary Edition. Before that I changed registry settings to get Windows Photo Viewer back because Photos was so terrible.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Babysit it if you don't want advertisements. I'm at my computer anyways so I rewind (previous button) the song before it ends and I NEVER get advertisements. If you click play on each individual song, you'll never get it either, until you click the next button.
