Ubuntu if you want up to date packages or libraries,

Debian stable if you don't give a fuck.

Literally no reason to install Debian Testing.

Ubuntu. Debian is a stupid Sup Forums meme and a useless freetard wannabe trash

Install Solus

>useless
It's for servers and office desktops, kid. Jesus.

ubuntu, debian is a waste of time

Debian if you have a brain, Ubuntu if you want botnet.

It's great for servers. I see no reason to install it for desktop use besides muh freeduhms.

>botnet
sudo apt-get install gnome xfce4 / lxde / gnome

such an old and false meme, at least give a real reason why noobunchu is shit - unity

looks like a dumb distro for dumb people. install an intelligent distro for intelligent people, like solus

install gentoo

also, check'd

>still belongs to a corporation

>the best DE that every other distro wishes to have
>falling for the bandwagon meme

Gas yourself fag.

if you run proprietary video card drivers, i would go lubuntu. if not, i would go debian unless there is some software in the ubuntu repo that debian lacks

are you saying Unity is the best DE lol? In my experience I tried but couldn't enjoy it in the end. Not customizable at all and what the fuck is that side bar. get the fuck off the side of my screen. you can auto hide it but that just ends up being weird. I do like how they integrated the window buttons into the top panel though. I use extensions on gnome3 to make it what I wish unity was.

and just the fact that there's ads built in turns me off big time.

arch

>Literally no reason to install Debian Testing.
rolling release, faggot
also, if you want to run debian and nor ubuntu

youre literally a faggot for stating opinions as facts

not to mention its bloated as fuck

unity is literally the most bloated DE

>unless there is some software in the ubuntu repo that debian lacks
this i guess. I'm diehard ubuntu because debian has pissed me off in the past. but the problems i had with it were drivers like you said, and bigtime problems with software in the repos. just one example is my favorite text editor geany, the version in the debian stable repos is always like 10 releases behind current. in my experience it's less 'stable' while also lacking features.

also libraries. I remember having problems with libstdc++ and others, don't expect to play any games or use new graphical features on debian stable. the java was old as fuck and I had problems with android studio when I wanted to make apps and just decided to use Ubuntu. just so many hours of trying to find drivers, libraries, compiling programs because there wasn't new shit in the repos.

but yeah if none of that bothers you there really isn't that much of a difference between debian stable and ubuntu. really doesn't matter.

debian unstable is better ffor regular rolling release usage

>complaining about outdated software in debian stable

use

fucking

testing

>rolling release

>How Debian Testing Works
>The package has been in "unstable" at least for 2-10 days
have fun using broken shit. If I want bleeding edge of a certain program I'll just use a ppa or compile it myself. Doesn't happen often though.

>youre literally a faggot for stating opinions as facts
There's edge cases for everything. There's literally no reason if you're a casual user who wants a functional desktop that just works. Testing is more annoying and slower to install while also being less stable, and with less support/community.

debian unstable can never be frozen, testing can.

>become

>a

>masochist

yeah no thanks for the offer though. shitty installer with more unstable programs than ubuntu and driver problems out the ass.

I installed Debian because I didn't want to fuck around with Arch, and openSUSE didn't have a functioning Spotify.

Even packages in sid typically lag several point versions behind other distros. Debian is mediocre as a desktop distro.

>uses ubuntu
>thinks its more stable than debian testing

>Testing is more annoying and slower to install
nope. ubuntu is more annoying to install, especially since it forces you to use a DE, and forces you to use a GUI during the install process

>less stable
debian testing is more stable than ubuntu, with the possible exception of LTS releases

> less support/community.
debian does not have less support than ubuntu. also, 90% of the ubuntu community are morons

Debian stands for:
- Freedom ( no nonfree software is installed by default )
- Stability ( every package in the stable debian must undergo extensive testing compared to ubuntu )
- Community ( Debian is not controlled by any private company and is developed in line with the Debian constitution and Debian social contract)

Ubuntu stands for:
- Usability (nonfree wifi drivers etc come with it for example, good accessibility to impaired users)
- Design (Canonical throws a lot of money at ubuntu's user-facing design)
- Enterprise ( Many decisions have been made to for off of upstream software because of Canonical's goals )

Starting to think the shills are right. Everyday linux just seems to be a meme.

Debian will never sacrifice your freedom as a user, or the free software community, to achieve it's goals.

debian.org/social_contract

testing is more stable than ubuntu and ive never had problems with drivers. ubuntu just makes it easier to install botnet drivers.

you seem to use all the hand holding and retard-proofing you can get though, so yeah stick with whatever the fuck is tailored more towards your special needs

Go with Ubuntu, it let's you use non free drivers for your hardware unlike Debian.
>Le unity is shiet maymay.
Only buttmad kids say this.
Unity is great to work with if you use the keyboard a lot, plus the HUD feature is god-tier.

> Go with Ubuntu, it let's you use non free drivers for your hardware unlike Debian.

aptitude install firmware-nonfree

>testing is more stable than ubuntu
[citation needed]
wiki.debian.org/DebianTesting
>The package has been in "unstable" at least for 2-10 days (depending on the urgency of the upload).

I stand corrected then.

also i agree the HUD is god-mode

i wish i knew how program computers so i could make a gnome extension of it.

>Advantages
No none. It comes with some bloated shitty interfaces that's about it

If you're borderline retarded it's an easier system to operate

Debian is far more stable/reliable

didn't work for me. when I used debian testing I installed firmware-nonfree, firmware-realtek and many other packages for my hardware but still did not resolve networking issues. firmware-nonfree is not *all* non free drivers like what is included by default in Ubuntu for convenience. you'll have to do some digging for what you need on your system. that package contains a variety of networking drivers.

>ubuntu just makes it easier to install botnet drivers.
this has to be b8
>wahh why doesn't my OS make it difficult to install non-free drivers that upwards of 50% of people need for basic functionality
Funny thing is Debian doesn't make it impossible, it just makes it inconvenient for a large majority of people.

There was something similar for Plasma, I really can't use anything else because i'm so used to it since a lot of programs don't have specific shortcuts for all menu entries.

actually 90% of people do not require anything but free drivers.

>makes it inconvenient for a large majority of people.

apt-get install firmware-nonfree is not fucking difficult, at all.

see
also
>actually 90% of people do not require anything but free drivers.
[citation needed]
every computer I've ever had needed some form of non-free drivers be it wifi or graphics.

even if that's true debian is still giving 10% of users an asspain by not including the drivers they need to properly use their OS.

>apt-get install firmware-nonfree is not fucking difficult, at all.
it is when you don't have wifi or ethernet drivers, freecuck

Unity is the result of Canonical devs hacking together parts of GNOME to get a different looking desktop. You can see little inconsistencies everywhere, for example the weird back button on the top left in the Software Center fits right in on stock GNOME but looks weird on Ubuntu. Same with the tabs on Ubuntu's terminal (Ctrl + Shift + T) - they look odd and out of place on Unity, but on GNOME they fit in perfectly. Canonical is supposedly re-writing Unity from scratch using Qt, so this problem may go away eventually, but for now it's kind of annoying if you're OCD about design.

I know this isn't really OP's question but I just wanted to bitch about Unity.

itt: yeah, debian sucks, i couldn't figure out how to do a google search to install some drivers, so now im using ubuntu which is clearly better

typical botnet enabling faggot

>debian is still giving 10% of users an asspain
no, it is the hardware manufacturers not releasing open drivers for mundane things like wifi chips and graphics

qualcomm released an open driver for their atheros wifi, and this has not harmed them in any way

amd has started to open up their gpu drivers, and this has not harmed them in anyway.

what is harmful is encouraging people to use botnet operating systems and botnet drivers

>ethernet drivers
know how i know youre full of shit?

>ethernet drivers

Ubuntu if you want it just werking

so much butthurt tbhfam

no joke. while installing debian testing on my thinkpad edge 11 I couldn't download packages through wifi because I didn't have the drivers so I tried using ethernet, dhcp wouldn't connect.

what are you even saying dude? your post is just words it's not even related to what we're talking about.

I and many others need non-free drivers for my networking and Debian is a pain in the ass. options:

1. install debian stable with non-free firmware included, spend literally probably a day to upgrade to testing downloading packages and installing and hope nothing breaks.
2. install debian testing, have a separate usb to transfer my wifi drivers on to the new install, hope I don't run into the same wifi problems as last time I installed testing
3. install Ubuntu in 5 minutes and everything just works, my packages are as or more stable than testing while being up to date.

are you somehow trying to convince me that testing is more convenient than Ubuntu? it's really not it's a pain in the ass. it's not more stable either. yes testing is more free but I really don't care I'd rather not have the asspain. it's a good cause but I'm not going to stiff myself for a concept. if anything I'm doing a service to free software by draining Ubuntu's bandwidth while not using their ad filled Unity

the only logical choice for desktop on 2016 is :

- Ubuntu : lot of tuto/packages
- OpenSUSE : nice KDE 5, lot of packages, Yast for easy advanced configuring
- Fedora : nice Gnome 3, lot of packages too, Wayland by default now
- OpenMandriva/Mageia : like OpenSUSE but more if you are a mandriva-guy

And Maybe something like Antergos if you want a rolling realese and a lot of package (AUR)

Why is a DE an advantage of a certain distro?
If you can't install a DE and some themes yourself then you shouldn't be using linux

Opensuse have KDE 5.8 LTS but only Gnome 3.20
Fedora have Gnome 3.22 but no Yast
Ubuntu have Unity, Kubuntu is shit

nice anecdote. heres my story

>install ubuntu
>crashes constantly
>uses 3GB memory even when no programs running
>broken packages everywhere

>install debian sid
>everything works 100%

quit buying shitty hardware you fucking moron. dont buy a fucking microsoft surface pro and then bitch that debian doesnt install its botnet drivers automatically for you

And i know how to do it your way but that's don't means me or people reading this want it
For me a good distro works out of the box

...

>The installer is too confusing for me
Why don't you install Mac OS instead.
Fucking todler

MATE is the best DE if you want speed and solid performance. Cinnamon and KDE are good for eye candy mostly.
