Picked up an 08 MacBook Pro
Nvidia GPU is bad, but replacing the motherboard is too expensive. Anyone know a good way around it? Is it possible to disable the Nvidia GPU and only use the Intel IGP?

no bully pls ;_;
someone brought it in to recycle but I didn't want it to go to waste. better than no laptop at all
Back in 2008 the intel mobile CPUs didn't have an on-die iGPU, they COULD have an onboard intel iGPU on the chipset, but if the manufacturer installed a dGPU, they would have no reason at the time to also have the intel GPU installed, Optimus and hybrid dGPU/iGPU solutions were not yet a thing.
Give it back Jamal.
well fuq
>implying anyone would have a reason to steal this ancient machine
>better than no laptop at all
Sell it to some idiot for $150 and get a real laptop.
not a bad idea
will probably sell and use money to fix other laptop
thinkpad t42 needs a new hdd, battery, and inverter
>t42 needs a new hdd, battery, and inverter
a T420 can be bought used for like $120 in working condition
Pop an SSD in there and it's a fantastic budget shit posting machine.
had no idea those were so cheap. time to browse ebay

nah, it's going to require a real repair / replacement which will cost $300, not even worth fucking with given a used 2013 or 2014 MacBook Air will be faster
and to think this thing was worth almost $3k a couple of years ago
>inverter
???
There's a utility you can download that will manually disable the nvidia GPU.
Too lazy to look it up, but we used it for the same shit at work--it's a known defect
Apple--it just wurks.....
you mean 8 years ago, and it's not likely that it was worth $3000 when it was new. It's a pre-retina Mac and had a Geforce 320M or something which is basically the equivalent of Intel Integrated 4000.
backlight on the screen doesn't work. assuming this is the faulty piece since that's the most common issue
>Apple--it just wurks.....
You realize this affected pretty much every laptop using Nvidia graphics at the time, right? Happened to my Dell XPS, happened to Thinkpads, HPs, etc.
looking up the model number, it was pretty close
17'', Core 2 Duo with GeForce 8600M or something like that. It was spec'd out by whoever bought it.
i'll keep researching
Ah, yes. Test it and the CCFLs before replacing either. It takes a while for CCFLs to go bad, but they do.
Doesn't fucking matter--Apple always totes as being more reliable, but lo and behold, they's susceptible to the same defects as laptops half their cost.
Lol my XPS was not half the cost of an MBP at the time. A defect that high up in the supply chain that only showed itself after a year or two, what do you want them to do about it?
I literally just googled 'mac disable GPU'.
See if this is compatible with whatever laptop you stole.....
guess i should have specified but i cannot boot into the OS at all. know of anything i can do while in single user mode? that's pretty much all i can get into
This occurred on MBP's with 8400GS's--if you bought an Alienware with an 8400, then I'm sorry to say, but you wasted your money, even moreso than just buying an Alienware.
Stop being an apologist for a company that charges twice the price for inferior hardware.
It can only work through the nvidia part.
Would you like to fix it? It's not working because the solder points between the nvidia chip and the motherboard have cracked. Remove the board, place it on a totally flat heat-resistant surface, and use a small heat gun or hot-air soldering tool to heat up the GPU to 250 c. Keep it that hot for about a minute and a half. Let it cool down and reinstall it. It should be working again for a while.
>This occurred on MBP's with 8400GS
It was occurring on every G80M graphics chip available.
>if you bought an Alienware with an 8400, then I'm sorry to say, but you wasted your money, even moreso than just buying an Alienware.
Who said anything about Alienware?
>Stop being an apologist for a company that charges twice the price for inferior hardware.
What? You're blaming them for something they had no control over and that everyone else also suffered.
Is this the Nvidia shilling I've heard about?
Like the OS is locked (because you stole it) or the GPU is that fucked up?
The only thing I can suggest is to boot up into recovery mode (command + r, or hold Option and select it), somehow track down an image/DMG of a recent OS and boot up into that, or use an external monitor and hope that it works. These are all depending on what is and isn't broken.
Honestly, if you can't figure this out on your own, you shouldn't be on this board.
aren't those fixes only temporary though? most of the time they come back after a couple of months
You can also try and 'bake' it in an oven, which will then reflow the solder.
Honestly, for a laptop that old, it might not even be worth it. For the time, money and effort it will require to open it (Apple loves using proprietary screws for their batteries), you can simply trash it and get a brand new netbook that will run circles around it.
If you do a good job it should last roughly as long as original manufacture. It probably will fail again eventually.
the OS isn't locked. when the owner wanted it recycled, we wiped the hard drive except for the apple recovery partition. coworker attempted to reinstall os x but discovered the GPU issue and i figure that i'd try to fix it.
any bootable usb gives the "No" symbol
gpu issue would persist regardless of what monitor was in use
solder doesn't reflow at that low of temperatures
as long as i can get some use out of it, i'll give it a shot. just gotta find a heatgun

Found your problem.
Why are you even wasting effort on a MAC? Applel is for libcucks you stupid fucking bluepilled inferior beta SJW buttslut. Maybe in your next life you'll be a real man.
Why do you care so much about Apple products?
Have you considered suicide for buying a broken mac?
>implying you wouldn't use one if it was your only option
Why do you shill so much about Apple products?
>buying
never said that
Sucking dick still counts as payment, macfag.
>macfag
well this was a fun run, guys. gonna put it on ebay for some extra cash and use those funds for a better pc.
Fucking hell, you really are a macfag. There are more operating systems than just mac and windows.
>implying gnu/linux users have enough time to reply to mac posts instead of compiling useless shit
Why the fuck did you pick a mac if you want to do gaming? There is no way Mac's will ever be gaming machines ever.
