So I got an RX 480 to go in my old PC. I knew that the CPU is awful and would bottleneck it but looking up people with this exact same system, it shouldn't run this bad. Games literally run identically to my old Radeon HD 6850. Skyrim remastered won't go above 35 FPS on lowest or highest settings. Settings don't seem to matter. Hitman 2016 won't go over 40 on both lowest and highest settings, and Hitman Absolution plays exactly the same as my 6850. What solidified it is when I tried Metro Last Light, which was unplayable on my HD 6850, and I get about 14-25 FPS on my new card. Looking it up, this guy, with an even worse graphics card, has 85 FPS as the lowest he ever goes: youtube.com/watch?v=MmtAXNjWkPM [Open] (I know he's using an FX 6300 and not a 200 but I'm pretty sure they're the same CPU with different clock speeds.
I uninstalled my old drivers and installed new ones before putting it in, I tried overclocking my CPU all over the place, my PSU should be more than enough for it (600w) and I don't think I have anything nefarious on my HDD but I'll run malwarebytes just in case.
a fx 6300 overclocked to 4.5 ghz removes a lot of the bottleneck actually.
Julian Cooper
You should just reinstall windows, I have no problems with my FX 8 core at 4ghz and my RX 480
the FX chips at 4ghz+ can easily handle modern games at 60fps
actually make sure hitman is in DX12
Joseph Long
But ya OC your shit and reinstall windows
Evan Myers
>Games literally run identically to my old Radeon HD 6850
Yup, something is dreadfully wrong. My Sapphire Nitro+ OC rocks.
Jason Young
>making a already volcanicly hot cpu run ever hotter Yeah nah just get a i5 you dumbfuck
Angel Bell
Interesting. Never been suggested to reinstall an OS. I dont know how to. I dont have Windows 10, I'm thinking of following this guide to get it. Think it's a good idea?
I'm also OCing my CPU with a stock fan so I'm afraid to do too much.
Caleb Young
Im poor enough, I can't, I just want this system to run how it's supposed to.
Ryan Young
You can install windows 10 without a key, but you're better off finding windows 7, 10 is horrible with automatic unstoppable updates and telemetry, and it automatically downloads mobile games
All you do is get an ISO, make a bootable USB with Rufus, and install your OS from there, probably splitting your hard drive into a 20/80 split with the OS on the 20% part so it's faster and easier to reinstall in the future
Just get a Hyper 212 EVO it comes with thermal paste
Ok. Im fairly happy with 8.1. How do I get an ISO? really dont feel like buying Windows. It's a prebuilt that I just swapped out the GPU and PSU for. How is reinstalling my OS gonna help?

Live within your own means, or quit bitching.

>has card that takes great advantage of DX12 >tell him not to use it because memes and autism Unironically kys your self
Julian Baker
Windows 10 is murderous to freedom
Though he may need it to play hitman on his FX chip
Vulkan is the superior graphics api anyways though, since it works on anything
Blake James
NOT OP but im buying a graphics card (1060).
I'm seeing there's a difference in clock speed between models, is this difference significant? is it worth paying $100 more for a certain 1060 model that has like 150mhz or whatever on the boost speed? (1850 vs 1700)
Kevin Miller
you're better off with an RX 480 given the DX12/Vulkan Future, and saving money with a free-sync display
Nobody is better off with a 480, it's literally worse in 95% of games. By the time this fabled future of Vulcan arrives there will be better newer cards to buy.
is that a bad idea? I want to get my computer ready for Vr. Right now I got a i7-3770
Oliver Harris
Except the RD models use shit quality mosfets.
Asher Johnson
Ya, naw, fuck that man, $375 CAD? GPU Boost 3.0 will push any 1060 to it's limits by default, no point in worrying about guaranteed clock speeds, but it's still not worth buying IMO especially in canada
Buy an RX 470 and OC it a bit, this one is $250 and has on average 80% the performance of a 1060 for like 35% less cost, easily best in class for performance per dollar, if affinity multi-GPU takes off you can throw in a second for easy VR in the future, or just upgrade to a cheap 1080/Vega GPU after you get your headset
As for VR I hope you mean a vive, the 470 is enough for VR, the bar was lowered to a 960 recently
It works fine at stock settings or a light OC to like 1350mhz, but like I said I think they did a revision at one point, probably since they had to come out with a bios update and say don't do the bios update and run Furmark or your GPU will explode
Charles Brown
I mean rift. and I want to invest in something that will last longer than "good enough"
Dominic James
GPU tech is always improving, performance per dollar is generally the way to go, in addition VR devs will always target the largest install base they can, that being a 970
Rift is a shit, save up for the vive man, or wait for the vive 2.0, nothing beats room scale
Evan Baker
Now I am really interested in why you think vive, apparently the touch controllers are much more amazing than the vives and I am interested in the rifts build quality + clarity/optics. I understand room scale can be achieved with the rift as well with another sensor and while the space isnt as big as a vives, i don't actually have more than 5x5 ft of space or so anyway
Would you still think the vive is worth it in my situation? I cannot even afford the rift new, i am buying it used for 600 CAD or so. That is part of why I can't afford a vive
Nicholas Carter
So why recommend a card for which you think there was a revision to fix this ridiculous issue PC brought on itself by going cheap? Who says anyone buying this card now will get the revision? Also, were the mosfets upgraded in the revision?
Gabriel Diaz
You don't need much space with the rift for most things
You should just wait for the better headsets that'll be displayed at CES man, aside from porn there's really nothing I can think of that makes VR worth it atm, more of an expensive toy
It's stupid, but it's fine for stock settings, he did an update video on it if you're talking about bullzoid youtube.com/watch?v=DkG5JOneYxY&t=1s
For one the rift is a locked down Facebook (TM) proprietary system. The Vive already has more games and Valve is a much lesser of two evils here.
Second off the Vive is just better Ive used both. Just save up and get a 1060 6gb or a 1070 and a Vive. You dont need VR right now its not going to change your life. But it is very cool.
Dont pay extra for overclocked cards do that yourself find the cheapest 1060 6gb that has good fans.
Julian Bennett
Yeah, I saw that one, but it still sounds risky, so why take the chance when there are so many better ones to choose from?
>the card might still catch fire, but at least the sticker is right side up now
Ryan Turner
Why is the vive better though? Objectively, the rift has better optics - and soon a better controller. Vive's roomscale is the only thing it has on the rift
Aaron Bailey
Theyre completely different experiences. The Vive is designed around room scale VR.
David Edwards
The rift touch is mainly designed for standing and facing in one direction from what I understand, dunno if you care about dota, but the VR spectator mode looks amazing and it's only going to be on vive
Seriously though just buy the RX 470 man, easily worth the savings over the 1060
Xavier Martinez
If it's prebuilt and you've never formatted, or at the very least reinstalled Windows, you're just asking for trouble. Prebuilts come with all sorts of gimps or bloatware preinstalled. As far as I'm aware, it could even be in the firmware somewhere, so you might be fuckaroonied.
Tl;dr build your own, don't buy prebuilt. It's cheaper too.
Eli Hall
I have a Dual 480 Setup and this is my experience.
>Vulkan The only game that gave me a fantastic experience on Vulkan was Doom. Going from GL to Vulkan was really a fantastic experience on that card. And that was the only game that gave me that experience.
>Crossfire Absolute utter shit most of the time. The only game I remember that worked great with crossfire was Metro Redux. Fallout 4 and Skyrim RE was a joke on crossfire. Call of Cash: 5hour Gameplay was a joke crossfire. Most of the time you get little benefits for added input lag. Fucking stupid.
>DX12 Multi GPU This is the only feature that works great for GPU Scaling. It has no added input lag. Tried this on Rise of Women Death Simulator and Deus Ex: Mankind Gutted Story. It was great, pump graphics to max and to problemo. The only issue I have is that sometimes you get some weird stutters, like loading or some shit. There are so few games that support DX12 Explicit Multi GPU that a dual gpu investment is stupid. I think there is like.. 5 games that support it..?
>h265 hardware encoder The card has been out for months and there is not one ounce of software that supports it yet.
>Drivers Drivers are weird, two times my computer fucked up driver upgrade. Sometimes windows 10 decides "HEY LETS INSTALL _MY_ DRIVER OVER YOURS! HAHA".
>GNU/plus/Linux AMDGPU is okay for desktop use, from 4.7 and up. Most newer games run like shit on it. Have to enable DRI3 and TEARFREE to remove all tearing issues. Browsers lags when scrolling. Sometimes it crashes gnome but okay. Cursor completely freezes for 2-3 seconds when i open Gnome System Settings or steam. Like what the fuck. Wayland on 3.22 looks cool in the beginning but then you realize it's shit and needs another year. Ubontu with AMDGPU-PRO and weird issues in the beginning with weird font rendering issues, fixed now. Gets stuttering here and there.
>No I don't like this card.
Julian Jenkins
what ubontu are you running? 16.04? im about to setup my rx480 i got yesterday but before i want to setup the system fresh since i had a ancient HD6950 with to much mods to clean up. got any tips for the setup?
Sebastian Jenkins
AMDGPU-PRO is only supported on 16.04. 16.10 has AMDGPU support, but you would have to live with that stack until the next release. If you want to use the open stack I would recommend arch or antergos to rolling fixes and improvements.

Well I cant build one right now. Should I go ahead and reinstall windows on my prebuilt or not?
Jose Jenkins
Just over clock the CPU and you should be fine
Aaron Mitchell
Also having a simar issue with my RX 470.
Currently Rocket League runs great in my (now) secondary rig with my old HD 7870 in it. Perfect frames, high settings, 1080p. Also ran great in my main rig.
Now with the RX 470 I get awful terrible stutter and lag in Rocket League at 1080p. In fact i actually have to lower the res to 1680 x 1050 to and settings to low/med to get playable frames.
On the other hand games ive installed for the first time AFTER upgrading to the RX 470 run like a dream. I get very solid performance in Titanfall 2 at 1440p even.
Its clear that Titanfall2 is more demanding than Rocket League so i think ill have to do a fresh install for those games.
Im playing on windows 7, also have win 10 installed and could try running RL from there. Havent tested that quite yet. My whole OS could use a fresh install and my C drive is pretty full. There is a minor driver update for the card but i need to clear up some space before i can do that. Not sure whats causing it yet

Sup Forums is a UNIX board.

Use a program like magic jelly bean keyfinder to quicjly grab your windows key. Write it down.
Get a windows 8.1 iso. Check your 'this pc' properties to see of its a Home or Pro version and if its 64 bit or not (prob is). Get the iso that matches the specs.
Back up any files you need to.
Run the disc at computer boot. You may need to change your BIOS settings to boot from cd first in priority.
Step through the installer, format your drive, and continue with the key you wrote down.
The key may not be needed, possible the key is embedded somehow but id write it down just in case.
Be prepared to download some drivers from your manufactures sites
Lucas Hall
>Get a windows 8.1 iso Like, pirate it? From where?
Isaiah Parker
Because I have had bad experiences pirating OS's back in the day with everything telling me "you're not using a legit version of Windows".
Joseph Murphy
I'm also noticing I get 50-60 FPS on metro last light for the first 3 seconds after booting it up but then it plummets to like, 19.
