I spent all day and night writing my final essay in MS Word, but when I was adding hyperlinks to my bibliography the program crashed and now it's gone.
I have looked in the "Recover unsaved documents" folder. It's not there. Strangely, a random blank document I opened as I was looking around word is though.
I've run Recuva and it found nothing

I work as IT at an upper secondary school and I see this shit every exam. Idiotic students who don't save a single time, and then their word crashes without any autosaving because the autosave often requires the document to be saved at least once.
It's your own fault for being a dumbass, consider proper document handle a part of the exam (it's something you'll need for work life too), and you failed it.

This, if you're in a halfway respectable institution they have really sophisticated plagiarism detection software. I've seen tons of students get busted for taking their friend's essay and replacing a few words. You'll be fucked over and fail out of the whole course as it retroactively fails all your other work too.

I'm going to assume that you're never going to learn how to use LaTeX because you're an idiot, so here's a real solution:
1: Write your text in a text editor, like WordPad, Notepad++ or gedit.
2: When you're done with the text, copypaste it into word and do the fonts, styling etc.
3: ????
4: Profit.
Writing text and setting text up to be a document are two different processes and should be treated as such.
It's always better to write in a simpler environment where you are alone with your text, so that you're able to concentrate on the important things alone.

Pages (and UIDocument based apps) on macOS do this the right way. Any document you create gets autosaved as soon as you make changes. Then it autosaves regularly, to avoid losing data. These documents are incrementally versioned as well.

a cold chill ran down my back. if i woke up one day and latex/bibtex just suddenly stopped existing, i swear to god i would have to consider dropping out of my phd program. too much of my work would become nitpicking about proper citation styles and shit, to say nothing of layout/typesetting in general.
also, lol at a crash making the document unrecoverable. meanwhile my advisor can diff versions of my papers on a word by word basis if he wants. we could cherry pick and recover shit at any level of granularity through git.
