Guys, please help. I've been having major issues the past 2 days and I cannot figure out what is wrong with my build. Before the gym I turned the computer off by the power supply switch in the back, which I never done before.
2 days later I start it back up and there is NO DISPLAY going to my monitor and no power going to my keyboard/mouse when I start the computer. CPU / GPU fans are all running, including Power supply fan.
What could be causing this?? I even put in a new CPU/power supply, EVEN a new GPU.
Please help, I'm clueless.
Owen Morris
When I saw your picture I was about to call you an idiot and say that your Mobo is broken in half, but then I realized that the "black metal strip" going across your Mobo is your graphics card.
Check if all the PSU Cables are connected properly, if they are, then maybe your motherboard is fucked.
But what would I know, I bought a AMD CPU and I regret it.
Tyler Jones
Does the computer POST without issue?
I see you have three different RAM sticks, have you tried removing one by one and checking if you still have problems?
Hunter Martin
OP Here, all PSU cables are in place and tight.. could any other thing be doing this? My GTX960 doesn't change anything either.. I even threw this on a different mobo and nothing. I am truly so sad right now. I need to fix this.
Aaron Lee
Sigh, this is why you supposed to shutdown windows the proper way, then use the on/off switch if you want. Sounds like maybe a power spike/short caused your mobo to die. I'd pull parts out except core components to see if your pc boots. Could be a bad ram stick/memory slot also.
Juan Jenkins
Sort of new to building, what is POST? & as for ram, no I haven't. Will try now. Does it matter what slot the ram is in? Or should I try each slot?
Christian Parker
OP HERE, That's what I thought.. but I even threw all these parts on a different MOBO and nothing. Same problem.
Wyatt Watson
OP Here, tried 4 different ram sticks in all 4 different spots, no luck.. Anything else?
Cameron Ortiz
Try it without the GPU
Liam Myers
did you really fall for the diy meme? wow you must really be retarded
Joshua James
POST = Power On Self Test
It's the beeps you hear when your computer starts up. Every BIOS has different beeps. Look up the beep codes for your BIOS. One beep usually means POST is OK.
Landon Lee
Jesus, you're using mismatched sticks in dual channel, and then another mismatched stick in single channel. Good job, OP.
Asher Williams
No beeps happen, what do?
Nathan Howard
Tried, nothing happed. Using 1 stick of ram, no beeps, no display no power to keyboard or mouse.
Jayden Roberts
Does your power supply's fan start up?
Aiden Cox
I'm new, sorry. Got 0 idea on what any of this means. Is that bad? OP Here
Easton Robinson
Did you flip your PSU switch back on?
Adam Gonzalez
What is the exact name and model of your PSU?
Jonathan Parker
Yup, all fans run. Everything.
Luke Ross
It's bad but probably not the cause of your issues.
You see how you have four ram slots? They can function in pairs, called dual channel. Usually slots 1 and 3 for one pair, and 2 and 4 for the other. Theoretically increases memory bandwidth. You're supposed to use identical ram sticks in dual channel. In general, it's good practice to not mix and match different sticks even not in dual channel mode.
Does the led on your mobo light up?
Juan Ross
This is it
Hunter Nelson
Thanks for informing me, great to know. & no, there's no LEDs ever on my mobo. Never seen one on it since I bought it. (Used for around 7 months.)
Luis Reyes
Does the CPU fan spin?
Juan Young
Yes, CPU/GPU and power supply. ALL fans spin
Ian Bell
Do either of your motherboards have onboard video?
Thomas Perez
Do you smell anything when turning on the PC, like burnt plastic?
Also, give us a pic of your Mobo I/O
Blake Jenkins
My other board does not, I'm not sure about this one, I would assume no. MSI 970a-G43
Grayson Flores
No smells.
Ayden Cruz
I asked for your Motherboard I/O, not the entire Motherboard.
Andrew Garcia
Sorry.. still learning.. I think this is the I/O
Jose Nelson
Do you have any other video card?
Angel Wilson
Yeah, a gtx 960 which I threw in there. Didn't work either.): Appreciate the help man. I just can't find out what the fuck this is.. I want to eliminate the problem.
Xavier Phillips
warranty claim the motherboard.
Charles Turner
Honestly, if you tried that much different hardware, I can't imagine it being anything but the PSU. But your fans spin, so it is providing some power.
Anthony Brown
Use different port on your graphics card to monitor
Jose James
So possibly a new PSU? Ugh, I hate computers.pockets drain on the daily.
Evan Nguyen
It doesn't matter, I'm not receiving any power to my keyboard/mouse either.
Cooper Flores
That motherboard looks old as fuck, and you're using three sticks of mystery ram. What do you expect from an old frankenstein macine? The PSU looks pretty crappy, too.
Build something good, and it won't break for a while. Build something crappy and well...there's an old Russian saying:
>The cheap man pays twice.
David Campbell
True I suppose. It's only my first build, guess I'll start saving for another year to buy a good computer. Ugh. Rip. Thanks everyone for the help.
Jacob Gomez
Do a cmos reset
Leo Jones
if you're still there OP take the power out of the back of the computer and there should be a watch battery on the motherboard. Pop that out as well and then hold the button to turn your computer on for 10 seconds. Then plug it back in and let us know
Caleb Kelly
Will try now, OP here
Luis James
No luck, CMOS reset did nothing. Restarted and still no picture/power to keyboard or mouse Heading to Best Buy to buy a new 650w PSU. Will keep updated.
Hudson Powell
Did you try putting the gpu in a different pci-e slot?
Grayson Wood
Yeah, didn't work either. Buying PSU right now, will return if it's not the issue.
Levi Mitchell
have you tried treating your ssd with a little more respect?
Jeremiah Ortiz
LOL. Op Here. It looks fucked up in the picture but it's not, I just had to put it in the back because I was fixing wires. It's properly fastened and screwed, mate.
Jonathan Taylor
>3 different RAM sticks >All expansion slot covers removed >Hard drive hanging upside down freely
What is this autism?
Aaron Davis
it's probably a ram issue, you have 3 different ram sticks. its a miracle that this worked at all. remove all but a single one. (put this in the second slot from the left).
Anthony Brown
Turn off the computer, then take out the CMOS battery from the motherboard. Leave it out for about a minute. Then put back in and power on your PC.
Luis Sanchez
if the ram sticks use the same voltage it doesn't matter if the ram is different brands.
John Wood
I've done this about 5 times, no luck. Still no power to keyboard, mouse and display to monitor.
Hunter Baker
have you tried powering on your computer with the monitor, keyboard and mouse unplugged. Then when the computer fully powers on go ahead and plug in all your peripherals.
Caleb Gonzalez
I've also done this, and tried all slots with all different ram types. No luck.
Lucas Adams
theoretically, but in practice, it almost always leads to problems sooner or later.
Samuel Cox
Yup. Have done this also, turned on the computer, waited 5 minutes than plugged in HDMI, mouse and keyboard, no luck.
Jason Perez
have you tried to see if the motherboard isnt just fucked
Gavin Roberts
How can I test that? Just bought another PSU and I'm almost home.
Wyatt Morgan
was tue build from scratch or did you replace old parts?
Jason Jones
Only thing I ripped was mother board and PSU both with only like 6 'moths of use time
Liam Cooper
well I have two of each of these brands running in my computer for over a year with no problems.
I got the Dark ram pretty cheap on newegg, plenty of good reviews.
Matthew Myers
put all the old shit back together and see if it runs thats the best way i can think of
Bentley Butler
check if someone like this or similar is dangling and not plugged into the mobo
Logan Thomas
Yup, nothing. I think this is just a mobo issue.
Julian Murphy
Do you know where the bios chip is on the mobo?If you do remove the main power cord take the cmos battery out okay after that take a paper clip and touch it to two of the metal bridges on the bios kindof hold the paper clip sideways and make two of the metal legs bridge together its not hard. After you've done this put the cmos back in and power cable and try to boot it up.If you get nothing try it again.Sometimes it takes doing it twice,If you want to research what I'm saying its the same thing as jumping an old bios to remove password.
David Nelson
Do as following, something should work fine, test one by one in each scenario. Get a friend's pc and start testing one by one each component. Since you fucked up with ram and being the most compatible across diferent mobos, i would start with them. Next, try with the gpu, I once had a really shitty mobo (asrock btw, the model was crappy af) that it's problem was that the pci x16 socket was a milimeter bigger, so there was a space between the gpu's stick and the socket causing problems in contact. Third the motherboard, I strongly believe the motherboard causes the problem. There are two possible cases. Something is fucked on the bios or the hardware is fucked up. Anyways, try getting one fully functional and compatible with your cpu and test one ram at a time and with/without the gpu for each ram test. Next the cpu, which can be harder to test since you need it to be compatible with your friend's motherboard. Finally, the psu, google how much power your build consumes and test it with something with more power just to be sure. My bet is that the motherboard or the psu are giving problems, since you can't go past the bios apparently, if it would then it would be something in the gpu or whatever you are plugging your monitor to get an image.
Cooper Bell
You haven't screwed your GPU into the case properly and it looks like it's half hanging out.
Blake Bailey
It is screwed in properly, not in the photo because I was in a rush.
