They do update actually, if you know how to submit the updates that they need in order to download the rest.
It's quite simple really once you get used to doing it.
As far as if it's by design or just M$ being terrible at this type of stuff... I don't know.

I can't go back to Windows 7 cause there's no Windows Key + X, it's still a solid OS but support for it with new software is gonna phase out relatively quickly.

Even after installing KB3125574 (post sp1 convenience update thru June 2016) I'm still having update troubles. Windows Update spins a core at 100% for days and days on end, doing nothing.

Agreed. I wish XP worked with modern programs but 7 is still great. You need to be careful what updates you apply to 7 though theyve tried to sneak in telemetry. Id rather switch to Mac than use W10

All in all, I will most likely install Xubuntu and use W7 in an offline VM.
I have 3 years to learn how to optimise the shit out of Linux for my T420 like I did with Windows 7.
(I can't fucking figure out thinkfan and tlp... Also, I can't for my life install a proper Latex distribution with a working package management system like MikTex on Windows.)

that's funny i use debian + cinnamon on my macbook air for work all day but my still come home to my air-gapped media centre pc running running an un-updated win7 sp1 with daz loader from 2009 to run my my 6tb jriver media centre with a bespoke firewire card and digital eq's and crossovers

The fact that Google Docs eliminates the need for Office 365 and most games benefit from latest drivers and DirectX12 features, it makes no sense to use Windows 7.
It has become a liability with outdated drivers and UI.

I admit I'm a noob, but when having it installed, I don't know if it works together seamlessly with e.g. Xfce Power Manager or if it has any conflicts with it. I don't know if I can continue to set up things with a GUI program and if it will override tlp defaults or just make it not work. It's not as easy to understand as how (Lenovo) Power Manager integrates into Windows.
I have read the Arch Wiki and other manuals like that but I'm not getting it 100%.
I have 3 years to figure it out though...

As for "clean" I've ran it through MWB, with no issues.
Even with windows can you be sure with DAZ loader?

Snap Plus adds this menu and WizMouse can be used to replace the focus-based scrolling with scrolling the content under the cursor. These can really help you in readjusting to Win7. As for software support, remember that Windows XP is either still supported by many applications or was dropped very recently.
