Personal servers

All the cool kids have their own server, and there's lots of cool services you can run, but they're so expensive if you want space. What does Sup Forums use?

I'm rockin a cheap hundred dollar one bay synology with a spare terrobite drive I had laying around

Local storage because I don't trust anyone with my data

I didn't know that there were also storage services. I'm probably going to use them. Figures that I find a nice solution just as I post my thread but you're free to keep talking about your server.
It's more expensive than running a server out of my house but I need experience for this for my job.

I built my own for $500.

I'm using an old Athlon I had lying around running FreeNAS for storage.

what can i do with a home server besides storage?

Mine's housed in a atx mid tower case with 9 bays. Running some old hardware from 2005ish. Still kicking after all this time. All I've done to it over the years is swap cases (old one ran outta bays) and replace a dead psu, raid card, and hdds. oh and upgraded from Server 2003 to Windows home server 2011.
Specs:
Opteron-170 2.0 ghz
4GB ram
1TB hdd (60GB for os, rest for client pc backups
4TB (2TB x2) - Movies, Music
6TB (2tb x3) - Data,everything else
320GB - server system image drive
Server data is backed up to a 8TB nas and a 3TB external drive.

You can use them to make secure phone calls between computers on the network

Run a shitty website where you can post your metaphorically jizz covered ramblings

if set up right you can access your home files from anywhere, also mail server. I mainly use mine for storage and also offload the heavy lifting to it from my htpc so I can use a silent passively cooled htpc. just put plex on it and it does all the work, transcoding and rendering and shit and streams it so the recieving device doesn't need a lot of power

Well you can stream your movie/music collection to any DNLA device in your house. You can access your files from anywhere in the world. You could setup a DHCP/DNS server and take the load off your router. or setup your own ftp server so people you trust can upload files to your server instead of using say google drive. Backup client pc's data to it automatically.

Just an old spare parts system I threw together for torrents and file storage. AMD Athlon 64 X2 with 2GB RAM, 60GB boot drive and 1TB storage drive, Windows Server 2003 R2

I run a r710 with Proxmox installed. I love having the ability to just easily spin up a container in like fifteen seconds.

Consumer:
>OwnCloud for syncing media across all your devices, cheaper than cloud services
>pass server (passwordstore.org/) for syncing passwords across devices, more secure than password services
>torrent web server to start torrents on your media system from anywhere you have access to a web browser. also integrates with android apps
>soulseek server to start downloading music from anywhere
>backup system for all your sensitive data
Dev:
>host your own bitbucket repo
>host your own mail server
>host your website for all your projects and services
>keep track of your machine learning training progress
>host a continuous integration server

You can also build an ad blocking dns, which is what I wanna do.
For now, I got my raspi meme to serve http to those with client certs to the internet, to get at my stuff and a paranoid ssh installation running as a normal user on a non standard port with ridiculous security settings from that secure ssh page on poc || gtfo

raspi isn't a meme, makes a great kodi box. I can't tell you the number of times I've creamed my pants to the porn on kodi.

The raspi is really cute I must add, under 1w idle, 4 loaded at the wall, compiling gentoo. Currently serves my music from a 128gb micro sd.

It's a shitty audio server though, that 3.5 jack hisses like all fuck.
I set up the hardware rng yesterday though, so I can excuse the abysmal audio quality and stream noise at 35kb/s

Get a dedicated sound card. Your ears will thank you.

just a NAS mainly for reasons stated by this user

I have a shitty home server because when I bring the ladies home from the nightclubs it makes them gush

Mine runs
>openbazaar
>FTP
>SSH
I dont have enough storage for any serious file sharing. I am working on a decentralized tv platform, and itll run that full time when it gets to that stage

turbo-poorfag here.

900mhz Intel Celeron
512MB DDR2
8GB eMMC
x4 2tb HDD hooked up to USB2.0 in raid 10

It's an old ASUS eeePC. Started with 1 500Gb drive and slowly added/replaced drives over time. I use it as a Usenet/Torrent/etc. downloader, network shares, emby media server, mail, DNS, and directory server. Running the HDDs over usb makes the speed shit, but it's enough to stream 1080p and that is all i need. I'm not running a data center here.

The OS and a gig or so of important data i wouldn't want to lose are encrypted and backed up to a filelocker in case the laptop decides to end it's suffering.

It strokes my e-peen to know that my 40$ turd does more for me than some people's $600+ NAS systems do for them.

I've got a Thinkcentre M91 running Owncloud. I'm probably going to set up an email server on it at some point. I'm just too lazy to do it right now.

>Supermicro A1SAi-2750F
>2.4GHz 8 core Atom
>16GB ECC RAM
>480GB Intel 730 SSD
>4x WD Red 2TB (considering replacing)
>Xen
>Debian dom0
Mostly used for torrenting and NAS. Nearly silent.

Got a nl36 Microserver running FreeNAS, not sure if I want to spend $100 to up the RAM to 16GB to run services in a jail or spend a few hundred more for an Apollo Lake NUC when they come out.

Was able to get a Thinkserver TS140 on craigslist for $100 a few years back.

Mostly for storage, torrenting and emby. Running Debian, but probably would've been better off just going for Open Media Vault.

Just use an old tower, or if you use linux just fucking install the stuff on your desktop.

>going to the club rather than posting penis on CL
Yeah right user

more like hiss admin

>pic related
Got it for free and upgraded the cpu from eBay to add mhz and hyperthreads.

>chad

My friend traded me a 650 MHz Sun Fire for a couple shitboxes a year or so back and it's been my main web/terminal server ever since.

Fun to fuck with and works pretty well.

Just make sure that you have security on your email server. We don't want another embarassing email leak, do we?

the limit is your imagination :^)

What is a good way to add several HDDs to a Toshiba Satellite laptop I use as a home server? Just get several external HDDs? I have two available USB slots, possibly I might change the DVD drive into a caddy for another HDD. Is that maximum?

Can anyone help me on getting my own server (for ownCloud and torrent seeding)?

My problem in getting a server is the hosting. I can't host it at home due to some weird reason. You see, my neighbor has this weird policy where everyone has to turn off their electronics after 10 PM. They believe that their children will grow up healthier if less electronics are turned on. They check on me and my other neighbor (I live in a single story duplex or whatever you call it). He (the other neighbor) gets home at 3 AM so no problem for him. As for me, they would usually disturb me every 6 hours and would sometimes get inside my house if they see that my meter goes above the limit (yes, our usage meter is exposed). If I ever forget to turn off my WiFi router, they would usually call me inconsiderate and then unplug it. I once tried calling the police on them but lost the case due to the police trying to be family oriented. I can't move to another house because my parents gave me that house since I moved out (and it's cheaper to live here).

I'm thinking of colocating my server but I can't afford the monthly pricing (the cheaper ones has either shitty bandwidth or shitty uptime) and I don't like renting server. Seems that it will only be a dream.

raspi 3 + external HDD for my pleb tier home server setup. Going to upgrade soon.

Just lock the door and use violence on the neighbour for breaking and entering

Your only choice is renting a server (use AWS for getting everything super cheap if you don't need lots of power)

If the neighbour unplugs something ( why do you open the door for him?) then just plug it back in again when he leaves.

I tried telling to fuck off by knocking on their door once with a Double Barrel Shotgun. That almost led me to a court case and cutting off my power supply (they have connections to the power company) and I don't want to go to Bismark on public transportation. When I ignore their "presense", they would sing Christian songs to me up until I reach my workplace and cut my power off because it's for my own good (this happened twice).
If I don't open the door for him, he and his ugly ass wife would follow me to work and annoy me with Christian songs (I have a car (it's an 80s Mustang that my dad used in his college days) but I travel by public trasportation because that car needs a LOT of repairs just to start). They also have connections to the power company, which means that they would cut off my electricity if I do not comply (they would stay outside for 30 minutes and read the power meter). They claim that they're doing this for God and my own good. Solar panels are not an option and they'd probably do something worse if I do that (like cover my solar panels with Bibles or something). Telling them to fuck off with my double barrel shotgun does not work because of connections and shit.

A shitty 10 yo dell power hog with a single core 3ghz cpu and 256mb ddr2 ram. Just a file server.

You're a retard and a pussy for allowing that to happen to you.

Got any suggestions for him?

I'm just finally setting up my 16 bay storage bitch to replace my dieing lump of shit storage server.
I was going to use it for other shit but oh well.

8x random WD 250GB drives
raid50
freenas

Speeds coming off it almost saturate the network speeds. Not sure where my bottleneck is, but probably the whole fucking thing.

Call the cops on them, every time. Sue them for harrassment if they persist. They're making his life a living hell, fight 'm back with tooth and nail.

chad is not a normie, user

chad is the guy who shits on you from such a height, you'll think god himself took a dump

First.
How are they getting into your house? Call the fucking cops.

Once you have secured that,
>obtain router
>get a boost converter or just find one that uses 5V
>charge battery bank at work
>run router off that all night
>SSID=Fuck You

Holy fucking shit TRIGGERED!!!!

/r/ing good dashboards

>soulseek server
I didn't know that daemon was worth using.

Grafana has been working out for me.

This has got to be bait. Otherwise it's terribly, terribly sad that someone is such a damn nebbish.

So I want to make a wow private server. As such I need an aplication server, for the wow main server. An Apache server for registration and an my sql server for item/inventory . If I want to split this up instead of making a lamp server. (I'm virtualizing each roll.) What os / distro should I run?
Cent is or just rhl are in the running.
As a side note I'm running them as hyper-v instances.

There's no reason to run RHEL if you're not paying for a support subscription.

I meant fedora? I forgot the name of the free version.

I have a plan to ruin their Christmas dinner. They gave me a knock and asked me to stop using my new giant ass stereo system (got it from my boss at work) because I was playing Satan's song (Back in Black by AC/DC). I'm going to play AC/DC and Metallica all night and since my solar panel arrived then can go fuck themselves. I'm going to start my own power grid with the my other neighbors on my street because they recently started harassing my other neighbors. I don't have funding (yet) for this, though.

They get into my house by bugging me, smashing my door and threatening to cut my power (they cut my power twice because they have connections with the distribution company).

>all night
>solar panel

Of course it's bait.

>I tried telling to fuck off by knocking on their door once with a Double Barrel Shotgun
This sounds like the kind of shit an edgy high-school kid would write.

I charged the solar battery yesterday.

WHAT THE FUCK.

are you deaf?

Shoot the motherfucker for trespassing?

I want to build a freenas box with some left over hardware but the minimum specs require 8GB of ram but my old hardware only supports 4gb of ram and then people are saying that you need 1GB more ram on top of that for every TB of storage space?

How the hell are people building cheap NAS servers from left over hardware when the minimum specs are so fucking high?

Get a diesel generator and turn it on whenever they turn off the electricity. Just get noise cancelling headphones for any singing. Weird that they are shitty neighbours if they actually believe in the Bible. Just stop letting him in and if he turns off the electricity then use a generator.

You seem like a total asshole. Punish them when they are acting out, but don't punish the family. It is likely just the husband or wife or whatever... If you leave a generator running when they cut the power then that is one thing that is necessary noise, playing music all night is petty

Yeah, it sounds very unbelievable. Especially when he makes a weird fantasy about a Christian man who probably would be viewed as a sinner by his congregation if he gave his neighbours shit. Likely just a child with strict parents and strict rules.

The free version of rhel is cent os.

I want to make a nas and a torrenting server with some other stuff by using freenas. The problem is that I can't find some cheap hardware to do this. I already have the hd's (recycled from my old pc) but I dunno what kind of server to buy. I looked into the microserver gen8 but It cost 200$. What are some cheap alternatives?

A old computer

justify spending money on buying a second computer you don't really need (unless you do)

I run old shitty power inefficient DDR2-era rack servers and use them for virtualization. Most important ones I run 24/7 are Plex, Active Directory + network shares, pi-hole and a VM i can remote into when I'm not home.

My setup is a steaming pile of shit and really outdated and power inefficient, but im not the one paying for the power and it does its job just fine with no problems and I cant afford to replace it with anything at the moment, so they probably keep running for at least few years despite their power usage and noise

you can runa nas on raspberry pi why would you need such high requirment, and why not just use a normal distro?

>1Gbit
No thank you, mr. poorfag

I have no idea about NAS devices, google just shows that most people recommend FreeNas, and FreeNas' site and forums say 8GB minimum with 1GB for every TB storage.

I'm just trying to move a bunch of external HDDs to a single centralized storage device down at the studio because I'm sick and tired of having to sift through like 10 of those damn 2.5" usb harddrives from 160~500ishgb sizes in search of a few files.

seems excessive

An Orange pi, raspberry pi, HDD I got for free (1TB, 500GB, 320GB), and thats a server.

FreeNAS uses ZFC afaik, ZFC is memory hungry because deduplication and caching in RAM. You don't *need* to have that much RAM, but caching won't be nearly as good. Minimum requirements are there to remove faggots like you who'd otherwise have 100 TB pool with 2gb of ram and wonder why oh why is ZFC such major slow shit.

Anyways, how the fuck do you people can afford terabytes of drives, but not a 20$ ram stick that's 10% of the cost? Seriously.

Rather than the cost of ram it's more like motherboard limits, a core 2 quad should be perfectly capable but lots of the motherboards are 4GB only with only 2 ram slots.

Still though, you could run a

Raid 50 parity calculations is your problem, fuck 50 and do r10. 50 is shit. R10 with 8 drives will be fuckfast.

Substructure dweller detected

Oh I'm not too worried about drives, I've just removed a like a half a dozen 500G~1TB drives from my personal computer replacing them with a couple 3~4TB ones.

I'm thinking of writing a guide on how to build your own custom little server with apache+ssl certs and domain redirection+sickbeard+couchpotato+owncloud w/https enable+transmission+mosquito+plex+samba+remote folder access+gitlab.
I'll do it if anyone is interested....

Yeah, seems like a good idea.

This
Share WiFi from your phone, they can't turn off your batteries. Get a weird AP name (theirs?)

no i am alyfe

Raid 50 is really dumb. You are lucky you are using 250gb drives, anything equal to or over 1tb and gl recovering anything when trying to rebuild.

Pis are great of you have a reason for them. I use mine to wake on lan my other devices so I can access them over the VPN without having to leave them on 24/7. I also have syslogs collected there from my firewall and host a personal website with it and it idles at like 110mb RAM usage.

How about you man the fuck up and tell them to piss off disturbing your property and mind their own business?

i do stuff

jesus christ who would believe this shit?

just seals the fucking deal, you people are fucking tools go back to >>>/reddit/ where dumb fucking stories are believes without any question

I already copied over a bunch of shit, I'm going to do a 8x2tb ZFS or something in the same enclosure whenever I feel like it.

And find a HBA that will work for that with PCI-X...

This is my current setup, fx 8350 with a fuckton of mishmoshed hdds, it had raid0 ssds but one died on me. I was running proxmox with a bunch o services but i turned it into a win server so we could do some desktop work on it to...

....since its only really running plex and a NAS I'm turning it back into a desktop, now I bought an old Dell 2850, gutted the parts I'm gonna mod the case to fit another machine just for server stuff that I'm gonna hide under my bed so people stop thinking of it as another home PC. I'm gonna tell everyone Its a cloud server. Already bought the parts, only waiting for the hollydays to be over so I can have some quiet time to build.

I run freenas on a dual operon server with 8gb of ddr1
Works fine

Those sun servers are the LOUDEST things in the world

It's not loud at all, there's only like three fans in it and the space it's kept in can be completely sealed if for some reason I find it intolerable, which is rare, it's no different from having a box fan on.

no shit, they were generally big and ran hot chips that needed a lot of cooling

depends what you want to do

i use it as a entertainment hub, it hosts games/movies and does rendering while im working.
