Laptops

As a student on a budget, what is the most suitable laptop? It wouldn't be used for anything too intensive: mainly word processing, internet browsing and the like.

By a budget, I'm talking about value. MacBooks are pretty, but I don't see them as good value for money. At the same time, I wouldn't want to cheap out on a Chinese craptop that is of no use.

I don't know a lot about laptops; all I can really do is list off their names, I don't know which are good.

Business series HP, Dell or Lenovo. Buy used.

Used Thinkpad.

/thread

buy used user
elitebook 2560p or 2570p
thinkpad x220 x230
small, portable and powerful.

>good value for money

Used high end business laptops. Massive quantities bought in bulk and then sold in bulk when replaced, often times still in great condition.

Slap in a new battery and you're good to go.

Thinkpad X220 on eBay

You won't get a better price/performance computer

Get on from this list.

2009/10 macbooks
Add RAM and put SSD in there and these things fly

comfy

>macshit
>any year

ThihkPad X220, X220T, T420, T420s or W520 depending on your needs.
Dell Latitude E6420/30/40 are also good choices.

>mac
lmao

I'm in your same situation, got an x220 because of the size. You might wanna look into some other series, depending on which size you want. But definitely a thinkpad

>for parts not working
kek

Acer is the cheapest laptop your money can buy with decent specs

>Acer
I thought Sup Forums hated acer?

Everyone hates Acer. It's the shittiest brand you could buy.

well, it has shit build quality, but as long as you're careful with it, Acer has laptops that go upto 200 USD cheaper to other brands with the same specs

Yeah, i was a bit skeptical top but then i decided to dall' for the meme and got myself a x230. Best choice of my life.

Really?
I was thinking of getting the Acer E5 575 from this .

Should I consider the Lenovo I100, or the Dell inspiron 3558 core i5?

The price difference most likely also means cheaper parts which are more prone to failure.

This week I got my father a Lenovo Ideapad, 15", i3, 8GB RAM. Since most consumer laptops are pretty bad I expected the worse, but it's build quality is pretty good. It also runs Linux perfectly without having to mess with any drivers (unlike Windows 10).

Got one of the 310 series, but the above might apply as well.

Usually Asus laptops are pretty decent, but slightly more expensive than the brands below.

I avoid most consumer laptops from brands like HP and Acer because of their terrible quality. Often they are made from cheap plastic and quickly overheat.

>Acer E5 575
its a good everyday laptop, but if you want to play some graphic intensive games, get the higher end with the 4gb 940mx

>play some graphic intensive games
Probably won't do that.
Just need it for office work and browsing the internet.

If you can, try to get one with a small SSD instead of a HDD.

just bought an odys shape 360

i'd smear that chink in my slit

disgusting woman, holy shit. I'll stick to euro girls, thanks

pish posh, most of the price difference comes from the casing materials and the layout of the motherboard + parts inside and the fan

that acer model has 256gb ssd and 1tb 5400 rpm hard drive

>SSD
Not where I live.

Which one of there got a good build quality? I don't want some plastic shit

Thinkpad x201 or x220

I just got a x201t(wacom pen enabled) for school for 100 bucks and put windows 7 on it. Better than any laptop ive owned

Very versatile. Sturdy. And best of all upgradeable.

>being this mad

productchart.com/laptops/
>14-16 inch screen
>1080p panel
>8gb of ram
pick your poison

or if you don't mind used then go for a dell latitude or hp elitebook(thinkpads are overpriced since they're more known)
used macbooks that are 1-3 years old aren't actually that bad

>being poor
Time to kill yourself, faggot

Get a windows 10 tablet, they've gotten much faster and more reliable. I got myself a chuwi tablet and wished I never spent 600 on a surface pro.

Those tits

literally this
get an X220 and shove a 1920x1080 IPS panel up in that bad boy and you'll have the world's most perfect laptop

No thanks. I've been at a lot of companies with Surfaces and most of them have BSOD or driver/firmware issues.

what about them?

I'm thinking of getting a Thinkpad T420 or T430. How easy is it to upgrade the HDD to an SSD?

I got a Teclast air tablet for 200, nothing beats this on value + mobility. It's like having a full win on an ipad. I guess I'll see how long this would last.

Found the faglord.

youtu.be/lLAlTbA5GXQ?t=1m11s
takes like 5-10 minutes

Very easy.
t. just bought a T430 and put a SSD in it

Nice tits

Very.

Most complicated: extract the SSD from it's shipping box.

Sup Forums's opinion on this one?

>Acer Swift 3 SF314
>Intel Core i5
>8GB RAM
>512GB SSD
>14" screen
>£600

good deal or not?

Yes
t. Acer Aspire E5-575G-56GY user

It's shit
Get a Thinkpad

>implying we live in first world country where all these are available.

so the idea would be, get any of the thinkpads mentioned here and then upgrade the necessary components?

And is it safe getting a used/refurb'd thinkpad?

What's your maximum budget?

~400$

Thinkpad L450 or L460, they're pretty cheap in my area (brand new). Any good, or should I go for the recommended T420s? What's the difference, other than the specs, in these models?

I'd advise against the thinkpad meme, but at that price point you'd be better off with a refurbed thinkpad. Ask /tpg/ about a decent price for the thinkpad you are eyeing.
Initial expenses for a refurbed thikpad would be lower than $400, but with the memes you're bound to put in, the total would come out at around $600-700, but that's over the course of upgrading
Also don't get the new consumer-tier thinkpads they are shit.

Refurbished aren't an option.
It have to be new.

>the new consumer-tier thinkpads they are shit

in what sense? quality sucks, or just overpriced memes?

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro.
It's about $130 only! Buy it NOW!

If you want the absolute cheapest go with a used Chromebook, bare necessities for the price (I'm talking $50 if you really dig around.) If you have a bit of spending money go with a used business laptop, you'll get power, good value, and it'll last you a really long while.

I really like the dell latitude series. My work provides me with one and its pretty damn fast for running windows 10.

I got myself one and put mint xfce on it and it's buttery smooth.

Check the dell outlet. Buy from there and you get the same warranty as if you would have bought new.

quality sucks
Used x230s on ebay average at $260, SSD included. That is assuming you are fine with the low resolution

>Chromebook
Will it..
1. Run office?
2. Play my chinese cartoons?
3. Allow me to install browser other than chrome?

These user, currently posting from my t420 and im in 2nd year uni math/stats. Its good for small python scripts and general homework.

Have even done some hackathon Android app on it.

Are there any companies in your country which sell refurbished business laptops?

I bought a HP Folio 9470M for 390€ with 1 year warranty. It had Core i5 3317u, 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD and 1600*900 panel. Battery lasts for 4-5 hours and new ones cost less than 40€.

I could have gotten a used laptop a bit cheaper where I live but I think paying extra 50€ for 1 year warranty wasn't too bad.

Intel CPUs...
Which is better regarding performance?
Y suffix? or U suffix?

which ones are the consumer-tier? I want an L450, is that a good choice?

get a meme thinkpad

what specs should I look for to program using VS 2015? I know it's a slow IDE, so I want to get a nice laptop to make it run smoothly. Intel i5 is enough? With 12 ram?

Enjoy your virginity. Get an Apple© product like a normal person, and maybe the opposite sex won't shun you.

Used/refurb is how you get them cheap. Although obviously take care when choosing one.

>Refurbished aren't an option.
>$400 or under
You will be relegated to consumer-tier laptops.
For your price, you could do worse.
