I used skytube for a bit while newpipe was broken but newpipe is too comfy not to use, plus I don't have to see retarded popular video suggestions on the front page.
F-droid seriously needs some sort of changelog section though, as I had no idea this update added a dark theme.

I have YouTube Red so there's no reason. NewPipe doesn't even let me play in the background.

Ah, I've realised while audio only is pointless you can use an external to open video. So just use MX Player to open it and set the settings through that for background playback and you're all good.

It doesn't even let me see my YouTube subscriptions. It has no playlist feature and as such I cannot download playlists like YouTube Red lets me. It's really not.

I actually have YouTube Red free until March. I tried NewPipe, but uninstalled it when I saw how many features it was lacking and how frustrating it was for the features it did have. It doesn't even have adaptive bitrate streaming.

Can't people just use whatever they're more comfortable with. There is no point in sacrificing convinience for a little more privacy. You can't completely avoid google. You'll either use their search engine, browser, drive, mail, maps or play store anyway. They will get your information even if you don't use the official Youtube app.
I got xposed modules for background playback, youtube adblocking and a dark theme. It's pretty much all you need to fully enjoy the stock app.
But hey, using an inofficial app that lacks half the features the official one offers and can easily be replaced by using xposed modules is sure worth not being part of le dangerouse botnet, right?

I'd use newpipe if it could play in the background without having to change from video to audio mode. What if I want to start actually watching the video at some point? I'd have to start over in video mode.

No. Chromecast is non-free so you need the offical app. Just download the videos if you plan on using new pipe and play them on your player of choice on your tv/monitor.
