Wow someone else who plays planetary annihilation. To bad the community for the game died and the game play wasn't that deep. But it was a good effort.

Maybe if you didn't play a shitty, unoptimized game on a shit "OS" you wouldn't have a problem with only 8GB.

>he likes swapping to disk when he gets close to his 8gb limit
>he thinks windows is intelligent with its pagefile where windows even swaps with 32gb of ram because of "intelligence"
>worse, he uses a mac which is atrocious at memory usage. enjoy your $200 16gb soldered upgrade kits :^)

>you will never use 8gb or more of ram

Someone obviously never played Rust.

but i have

I frequently spike up to around 12, but mostly that's because I never close anything even if its getting ridiculous memory leaks. I could definitely make do with 8, but I dont need that kind of stress in my life

>mac which is atrocious at memory usage.

tfw you use a 07 tower with 2gib ddr2 ram and run on a riced out linux os within ramdisk with a seperate cache drive and still can compete in fps games in steam

luckily im just another user and i shall never know the shame.

Can you post that wallpaper and which DE you're using?

That game was such a let down.

My new PC has 4gb of ram
I feel like I could use some upgrade but since when I builded it the price for a 4gb stick went from 24 eur to 40

>PA:T w/ Legion
1G of RAM per planet though is fucked though.

as you can see, free -h and htop report virtually same amount of ram usage.

>Disk caching makes the system much faster and more responsive! There are no downsides, except for confusing newbies. It does not take memory away from applications in any way, ever!
>If your applications want more memory, they just take back a chunk that the disk cache borrowed. Disk cache can always be given back to applications immediately! You are not low on ram!
>This is just a differing understanding of terms. Both you and Linux agree that memory taken by applications is "used", while memory that isn't used for anything is "free". But how do you count memory that is currently used for something, but still available for applications? You might consider that memory "free" or at least "available". Linux instead counts it as both "used" and "available", but not "free":
cache = free (AVAILABLE) ram. so just count cache as free ram as well.

Not the guy who asked but
Thanks - lovely desktop I will try to emulate it later

yeah it was at release. titans brought much needed improvements to the game and the mod legion brings it very close to supreme commander but it's still no supreme commander. the biggest gripe i have against it is also what i like about it. planets. i like the idea of planets and somewhat space combat but i miss the flatness of regular maps. it be nice if they kept the worlds "flat" and made it when you zoomed out you "enter" space.

i'm running tint2-git for some of the additions they made so the config might not work on the stable branch.

oh yeah urxvt is the xresources256 patch version for the extra colors.

What are you some non gaming pleb

Currently using 8.7GB and I'm not even playing any games.

Fuck off I use up to 32 GiB compiling heavy template shit

Even 1GB is enough for shitposting. If you want to discuss games, go to Sup Forums.

That's fucking terrible. I'm using about 700MB with Firefox open. I bet you're using Windows 10.

I am using Windows 10 but that is beside the point.
Boinc is using up 2.5GB itself doing science.

>have 12gb of ram (down from 16 after one stick died)
>tfw constantly running out of memory
Being a computer whizz is suffering

I sometimes use 10 of my 12 GB

>windows even swaps with 32gb of ram because of "intelligence"
I really hope you have vm.swapiness set to 1 before making that claim.

This fampai.

Some applications will make use of swap or need it even before RAM runs out.
I ran into that problem on my OrangePi trying to run Einstein@Home on it. Without any swap available running any more than two binaries would cause them to crash even though there was still half the RAM free. Adding a swap partition fixed the issue, they use the swap even though there is ample RAM available.

All the tweaks I tried to fix it without adding swap wouldn't work. Some applications will just make use of it and some applications need it.

I feel like buying 1tb of RAM to piss off some poorfags. How much will it cost me... 3 grand? Brb

>Planetary Abortion
>being a standard for RAM usage
I'd like to remind you that this game is famous for having the user UI run in a separate process, which can crash and leave the main application GUI-less.

>even if its getting ridiculous memory leaks
What garbage software are you using that leaks that bad?

You only need 2 GiB of RAM. Some applications may demand you more, then you can just download more or stream it if you have a good internet.

Why not use a VM

so not filling up your ram when opening notepad means its shitty? kek

>his OS doesn't have notepad integrated

Xp only
C2d master race

Shame the gpu i chose will not output video
I dont feel like trying to replace it

>doing science
wasting electricity you mean

I play games that eat up over 8gb of ram all the time my dude.

>hurr u no need more than 4gagibites of ram
>hurrr no waste money on ram
>i know the value of a dallor
>i no can afford $15 extra for 16gagabites of rum over 8gb of ram
>use optimized software u pleb HAHAHAHAHA
>i seven year old processors because i no value of dallor
>u oppress me with your 16gb and greater ram. stop it you white male. check your privilege
/g in a nutshell

same

It's not a waste. Heat generated is transferred into my room and it is winter.

Everyone wins.

why would anything other than a game need so much ram anyway? I get it if it's scientific computation but for office, video, ect... what the fuck?
I only need 1G of the ram I have at most times unless something is going apeshit and needs to be killed.
Also "old hardware" is a bad excuse for bad programmers as you should make sure it works first on hardware at least 5-10 years back before you ship as that's what most have.

People like to rationalize bad coding in these parts

people like to rationalize their poorness in these parts

I am ForgedAllianceForever veteran, but did not play in a year.
I also have PA, but did not play it at all.
Is it playable?

I go where OpenBSD has support since that's my system of choice.

>Can literally buy 16 GB used for 40 pounds or something
Why settle for 8?

It died because the devs didnt support it once it became clear trying to clone TA wasnt so easy.

if someone addressed the cpu issue with Forged alliance it would be massively popular.

Why would I play Rust? I am not a retard.

When you use linux
But when you use Windows you need 32gb haha

No point. Blind consumerism.

Well, sure. If you run Linux without a GUI you probably won't use more than 8GB of RAM.

Xfce uses ~200MiB on cold boot.
