virtually nope, in reality yes. im glad we came to an agreement btw

have you ever used windows server in a proprietary setting?

is ecco the dolphin secretly australian?

What did he mean by this?

This kills a wincuckold

It's obvious you've never tried Linux for anything outside of some dimwitted gaming scenario. With age, you'll learn to think, before making bold statements that expose your ignorance. It's okay though, modern society protects the weak.Just know that in nature, you probably wouldn't have gotten so far.

>virtually no advantages
But in reality?

Depends on what version of Windows.
Even ubuntu does virtual desktops better than windows 7 and 8 for example.

What is linux good for? Coding? For music, video and photo editing, it's not as good as either mac or pc.

...

I'm not the guy you're responding to, but Linux dominates every computing market except the desktop. Of the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world today, only 2 don't run Linux. Somewhere between 80 and 90% of all embedded devices that run an OS uses Linux, and this figure is only below 90% because it includes smartphones. For servers, everything is virtualised these days and run Linux as the hypervisor OS because nothing else can compete. For internet backbone infrastructure, around 60% is using Linux.

I use Linux on my workstation, I use Linux at home (for my media center and on my phone).

>Linux virtually has no advantages over Windows and you know it.

Except that it respects my freedom. Which is most important to me.

But by all means, enjoy the botnet, kid.

>be OP Sup Forumstard

>let's trole Sup Forums
You need to be over 18 to post.

A 100% cost advantage.
A big freedom and control advantage.

And it's actually more capable, regardless if you want to set up a software RAID, a ramdisk, or just use a mounted network share to run some program binaries and their data off some data cloud, an USB stick, or whatever else.

>implying that's a bad thing
You pay for windows, if it didn't have an advantage over linux that would be quite a trick for it to stay in business.

>virtually

it does not

>realistically

it does.

>227
you must be new here

>Entire US Department of Defense runs Red Hat Linux, including US Army & Navy on the nuclear submarine fleet
>Northrup-Grumman MQ8B Fire Scout drones Vertical Takeoff & Landing system runs on Linux.
>US Federal Aviation Authority runs Red Hat Linux.
>US National Nuclear Security Administration use Red Hat and Fedora
>Amazon.com uses Linux "in nearly every corner of its business".
>The Chicago Mercantile Exchange's all-Linux infrastructure has processed over a QUADRILLION dollars worth of financial transactions (All the money in the world, 16.66 times over)
>London Stock Exchange uses Linux.
>New York Stock Exchange uses Linux.
>NASA put Linux on ALL International Space Station laptops.
>All of CERN (Including Large Hadron Collider) runs on Linux.
>Google runs on Linux.
>The NSA uses Red Hat Linux.
>Over 90% of the world's fastest supercomputers run Linux
>96.6% of the world's top 1 million websites run on Linux

People with important shit to do tend to choose Linux. But tell us more about how it has "no advantages".

Because people are not companies. Unless you're a coder, you have no use for linux.

>run Linux as the hypervisor OS

vmware ESXi is vmkernel
hyper-v is windows
xen, which can be ran on *bsd and solaris

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>For music, video and photo editing
But user, very few specialised industries need to be able to edit video and music.

Actually, according to top500.org 99.6% of top 500 world's fastest computers run Linux.
The rest 0.4% run UNIX. Wincucks btfo.

>For internet backbone infrastructure, around 60% is using Linux.

Source? Neither Juniper(FreeBSD) or Cisco (except ASA devices at branch offices) use Linux.

...

Number of CVEs says not much about security because unknowns aren't (cannot be) factored in.

Not arguing against either side here, just pointing out that this guy is not actually making an argument.

Posted from Debian.

Pajeets use Arch Linux or Macbook.

why work for industry?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Windows, is in fact, NSA/Windows, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Windows. Windows is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another expensive component of a fully functioning Spy system made useful by the NSA core-spyware, reverse shell utilities and vital keylogging components comprising a full botnet as defined by Gen. J. Clapper.

Many computer users run a modified version of the botnet system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of spyware which is widely used today is often called “Windows”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA system, developed by the NSA. There really is a Windows, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

Windows is the cover: the program in the system that hides the spying resources from the other programs that you run. The cover is an essential part of a botnet, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete botnet. Windows is normally used in combination with the NSA spyware: the whole system is basically botnet with Windows added, or NSA/Windows. All the so-called “Windows” versions are really versions of NSA/Windows.

Wait, what is our definition of a Pajeet again? Because my mental ima/g/e is more along the lines of filthy, in the literal sense, windows "support" hotline guy.

Linux probably has an equal or higher amount of vulnerabilities, it's just that no one bothers to look for them because of low marketshare

not him but this is
>windows 10 vs fedora 23
>both released somewhere in 2015
>fedora includes all suported software available in the repo, and shows bugs since the split from fedora 22 (so 2015-02)
>windows 10 is just the base install basically

its free

also this is what happens when you compare just the recent versions
cvedetails.com/version/193263/Fedoraproject-Fedora-24.html
cvedetails.com/version/200932/Microsoft-Windows-10-1607.html
one month difference in the release ,but fedora 24 still includes bugs since the beta.
Its basically DoS vs Privilege escalation at this point.

Good information and all but as someone else who is just generally curious what is Linux good for? Like does it make it easier to do certain tasks? Etc etc.

>linux in charge of security
LMAO they haven't created a new security feature in fuckin years, freetards literally just copy what windows does badly

here's a new security feature to prevent outside binaries from modifying yours if you have a driver:
twitter.com/aionescu/status/827663010659315712

>they believe in "security as a product"

As a good sysadmin I prefer Linux to Windows any day, but you faggots are doing a disservice to our craft by spreading the "security as a product" myth.

you are a sysadmin, you literally don't know what security means.
you could be given a stack overflow on a binary with no ASLR and you'd have no idea what to do

No, you don't know what it is.

Read Schneier. Git gud.

schneier.com/essays/archives/2000/04/the_process_of_secur.html

>Security is a process, not a product. Products provide some protection, but the only way to effectively do business in an insecure world is to put processes in place that recognize the inherent insecurity in the products. The trick is to reduce your risk of exposure regardless of the products or patches.

do you even know what ASLR is? how about rop? Why is ret2libc a common attack on linux? hell, what's the vDSO? how does copy on write work, and what made dirtycow possible? fuck off you literally don't understand security, you just use shit other people write.

>I can't argue so I'll just spit out half a dozen technical terms and hope that makes me appear more knowledgeable

Stop, you're embarrassing yourself. Any cybersecurity expert worth his salt has got to know the first thing about security: it is a process, not a product. You have to implement proper security policy and procedure regardless of what products you use.

Now get out.

I know Sup Forums memes about GNU plus Linux but in this case the distinction is actually relevant, "Linux" on this chart is for security holes that affect the kernel while "GNU" is any security issue across the dozens of separate software packages produced under the banner of the GNU Project

It's still dumb that this chart pretends that listing entire companies with dozens of software products (MS, Oracle, Apple) next to projects that produce one piece of software (ffmpeg, OpenSSL) is an apples-to-apples comparison though

Only way Linux cucks can argue is through fallacies, user.

the fact that you're calling it """""""""""cyber""""""""""" security proves even more that you're a retard
go waste more money on sans courses to think that you actually understand security and how exploitation works

Oh look, yet another non-argument reply from the retard who's unironically defending "security as a product"!

>"""""""""""cyber"""""""""""

>still can't refute that he's a skid
lmao fuck off freetard you literally don't understand how the computer you're using works.

They know it.

FUCK YOU OP DIE IN FIRE . A lady friend came to me last week. she on a creates professional content with pen stylus and touch screen on an older laptop. Win 8 upgraded to 10 and nuked her computer because of a driver issue

>install win 7
>took 40 minutes
>daz loader
>10 minutes
>intstall drivers
>30 minutes custom fujitsu crap that needed to download through the fucking program i downloaded
>reboot
>update windows updater
>download and install windows convinence update
>30minutes and thats the quick way
>remove telemetry from the update
>more fucking bullshit

just so she can run adobe CC

fuck you OP it took me 5 minutes to install linux mint from a live stick and everything just worked and now she is never going back

FUCK YOU OP

I bet Bruce Schneier knows all that and I'd rather believe him than some random faget in a crimean matryoshka online forum any day.

the os might work and install quickly, but will she have the programs needed for her stylus work? I mean the products of adobe family are highly regarded for a reason, and gimp is not an alternative for photoshop

Anyone that argues against Linux is a Microsoft shill. Every time, no exceptions. Just ignore him.

this line
>Today, over a decade after Morris and 35 years after these attacks were first discovered, you'd think the security community would have solved the problem of security vulnerabilities based on buffer overflows.
literally proves he doesn't understand how memory works
freetards in 2017 LUL

Whats with the rapey vibe coming off that fake fish.

>fish

Gaymers and wageslaves don't give a shit. Most of us use OEM installs, some format their system when it becomes a nuisance. Windows will always be our choice.

>freetards

nice kernel developed by students my dude

>Windows
>20GB install
>172 vulnerabilities
>116MB per vulnerability

>Fedora
>250mb install
>71 vulnerabilities
>3.5MB per vulnerability

Sounds like Fedora is the one that's poorly coded, not Windows.

as opposed to breaking her fucking computer without warning ? no thanks. She is one VM away from dumping windows for life. We all know they shat the bed but what do you expect from NSANIGGERS.

Haven't formatted my system since 2006 when I installed Windows Vista, and I've gone from Windows Vista to 7 to 8.1 to 10.

Just gotta not be retarded. Same with using Linux.

Few colleagues of mine are fucking degenerates. They infected their system with shitty torrents and Russian game repacks. The Windows rot slowed their system to a crawl so I had no choice but to cleanse their partitions and install Windows 8 for them.

Sounds like you're retarded. I've brought some horribly fucked up windows installations back from the brink.

Is this bait? This is bait right?

That's macOS & BSD, the kernels come from Carnegie Melon and Berkeley respectively.

But did you install adobe cc on linux?

>What is linux good for?

>Linux runs on supercomputers and is good, I use it a lot

No...if you make a small program it's easy to prevent vulnerabilities. Making a very large program vulnerabilities are more likely.

The fact that MS was able to have far fewer vulnerabilities as their OS grew in size shows they're the better developers.

Trying to compare software based on the number of discovered vulnerabilities is bait to begin with. Windows is far from being perfectly coded, but that doesn't translate directly into Linux being "more secure" or better for the average end user.

linux was literally a student project also lmao

It's actually pretty surprising that there are only 4k vulnerabilities. Considering the marketshare, you would think there would at least be double above competition.

>sane programming environment
That's all I need out of Linux, and Windows doesn't have it. Don't bother trying to refute by bringing up Visual Studio, it's a steaming piece of shit.

ms has security contractors auditing their code full time, so any of the bugs they found aren't going to become CVEs

>was
And you were literally unable to feed yourself, shat yourself several times a day, and couldn't even speak... When you were a baby.
was=/=is

Windows server is a mess

i said "nice kernel developed by students", are you arguing that it wasn't developed by students? there is 100% still code in the kernel from when linus was a student

>implying the binaries have the same size/code line on both system
>implying fedora kernel don't have a bunch of driver already
and so on

windows is by far superior. more security holes discovered over time thanks to MS's huge appearance in the market.
Linux is actually worse, and less secure than any microsoft product.

KEKOMGOPBTFO suicide watch.

bait thread is bait

The absolute, most basic advantage of Linux over Windows is never worrying about forced restarts.

reverse security by obscurity
kek

am running Win10 and haven't had a forced restart once, been using it for over a year
