Modify it yourself then, gtk and gnome-shell themes are just CSS.

Not really, no. The only ""solution"" I've found is manually editing whatever theme you're using and deleting all the fucking borders. Still shit, but a bit less wasted space than the default.
But yes, UI design went full apple toys retarded.
