Chromebook general

What do you do with your chromebooks? I use mine mainly for uni stuff/facebook/youtube etc, but I'm looking for other things to do on it. Any cool android apps for chromebooks you're using? Anything else to do with it?

Any reason to go Chromebook over thinkpad X2xx aside from aesthetics?

depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to install non-android (or non-linux if you install crouton on the chromebook) programs, go with the thinkpad. If you're okay with just using android/web apps, chromebook is fine because it's pretty fast, takes just a few seconds to start

recently bought the 2013 pixel. can't wait to shitpost on it

Thinkpad x2xx weighs over twice as much.

Not a chromebook, but I have a chromebox with Windows 10 installed which I use as my main (and only) computer.

What Chromebook is Linux friendly?

This one

which one is that?

chromebook pixel

Speaking of chromebook, are there any good notepad apps with rich text formatting? Seems all I could find are text editors, or the microsoft word that came with my samsung galaxy which only seems to save in .xslx.

I didn't realize these are super cheap now.. how do you like it?

Waiting for this beauty to be released. Just need to see a few more reviews first.

Pretty much any chromebook with an intel cpu. Stay away from ARM chromebook if you care about loonix support because linux on the arm chromebooks don't support openGL hardware acceleration.

shitpost
rice my xubuntu desktop
decent machine considering it was free

Where are they super cheap? They are still $400 on eBay for 2 year old used shitbooks.

Emulators
you can play most games prior to the PS2 generation of consoles

400$ is a pretty good deal for a pixel though

Oh, so you were shilling for used pixels. Genuinely disappointed because I thought they were actually getting cheap.

>not running Android apps on your Chromebook

I was just passing by, I'm not shilling for anything and I'm not the guy who first mentioned it

also the chromebook pixel 1 generally sells for around 300 CAD here so I suppose you'll find these even cheaper in the states

>Where are they super cheap? They are still $400 on eBay for 2 year old used shitbooks.

you can buy a brand new sealed one on Amazon for $350

axe me how i know

why not put linux on it my dude

they're nicknamed "pornbooks" for a reason
they almost never get malware, and you can wipe them in seconds

Because will stop receiving Chrome OS updates in less than a year, they will never run Android apps, their battery life is shit and they're painful to get running with other operating systems.

>calls an ARM chromebook a "beauty" and then tells people to stay away from ARM chromebooks

>they're painful to get running with other operating systems
it's literally a matter of running a script

also the battery is terrible for a chromebook but for a regular laptop it's not bad, I get around 4h on mine

Is this true? I was looking into a good pornbook.

>4h

which is terribly when compared with any laptop released in the last 6-7 years

>for a regular laptop it's not bad, I get around 4h on mine
You mean for a regular laptop in 2012, right?

battery life and size/weight basically

it is.

just log in as a guest. then your whole session runs in chrome incognito mode.

log out and it's all gone.

>chromebook filled with shit
>CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+R
>select yes to powerwash
>log back in with google account

>4h
nigga...
and this thing is six years old too

2013 model?

whats your secret?

its a cr-48 and therefore has decent battery life because its the only decent chromebook

honestly I didn't know laptop batteries were this good now, when I bought mine all the other options in the 300-500$ range had shit batteries

your average battery life of regular use on your average consumer laptop today is 6-7 hours
more if you have a low powered netbook
still about the same with higher power stuff since they just add a larger battery
significantly less with gaymer laptops

I thought we were talking about the pixel

I'm looking at buying a Chromebook because I just realized I don't use my laptop for much more than Sup Forums and watching movies and my Thinkpad broke (thanks mom, you're a fucking bitch)

I found a Chromebook pixel on eBay for $318 and it looks pretty good, 2560x1700, i5. But the problem is that it only has 32gb storage and 4gb ram. Is there any way to upgrade that? I'd be willing to buy a 128gb SD card for storage, but the low ram is kind of off-putting.

good ass deal dude.
ram isn't an issue with these things. I can have like 25 tabs open and it'll never even chug a bit

sd would work great too, but I honestly use google drive a lot

install gentoo

lol

as far as I know all chromebooks are upgradeable

I think the pixels have 2 dimm slots, and the ssd is upgradable too

It's going to be either running Chrome or whatever Linux distro you put on it, and it only has a dual core processor. On a system like this designed for light workloads, 4GB of RAM is more than enough.

I have had no issues with performance on my 2013 Pixel. I never even used ChromeOS, I just wiped it and loaded Gallium Linux immediately.

The Pixels are virtually non-upgradeable.

I got an HP Chromebook 11 (G1) in 2013 and am still using it.
>those speakers
>that beautiful (but tiny) IPS display
>that battery life
>that keyboard
>that trackpad
Literally almost everything about it is perfect. It's actually performing better than it was when I first bought it. It only gets better with age. Only problem is that you can't do much with it. It might surprise you every now and again with what it can do if you're willing to modify it a bit, but mostly it's just for editing documents, listening to music, watching videos, shitposting and porn.

It's not a Pixel but whatever, it's really nice for just casual browsing. I actually prefer it over the Windows laptop I have.

I had an Acer C720. Fucking awesome little machine.

I have to admit, I actually really like the way Chrome OS handles updates. It just quietly downloads the update in the background and waits until you're ready to shut down to update. And the best part is that there's no configuring or anything, it just shuts down and boots up next time like nothing happened. It's cool.

My aunt had one of those, that screen was nice
And danm that thing was solid

>had
What went wrong?

My favorite part is that it's not buggy or broken after updating.

That Chromebook comes in Intel and ARM variants. The ARM version releases on the 12th, the Intel one doesn't have a release date yet. They're exactly the same except for the processor.

If I only plan on using Chrome OS and not installing another Linux distribution, is there any advantage or disadvantage to getting an ARM chromebook over an Intel one? I remember when Intel Android phones were a thing that they couldn't run a lot of Android apps. So now that Chrome OS has the play store, does the same app compatibility problem on Intel processors still exist?

Stupid question: Why can't Windows, Android and iOS updates function the same way Chrome OS updates do?

Because chrome OS is a rolling release of sorts. The others have defined versions with major changes each time

>Toshiba Chromebook 2 2014 Bay Trail
>Don't want to run/use buntu based distros
>love yaourt & Manjaro
>Manjaro Cinnamon just werks and no other Manjaro boots nor works on my Toshiba Chromebook 2
>Sound is borked and doesn't work so no sound
>Keyboard layout is fucked and doesn't work but keyboard is usable for typing
>Only one fix for keyboard + sound and it only works for ubangoo and it's a script

Fucking shit hell it fucking hurts sucks ass. Fuck Ubontoo and Ubuntu cock riders you're the fucking reason why we have very little distro love and support for Arch based distros

nothing, gave it to my little sister

Windows has moved to that platform more, with 1607 being an example of that.

Any Chromebook user here to help? 350-400 budget, ISP and no plastic construction. What can do you recommend?

pixel

Advantage: Cheaper
Disadvantage: Less powerful, but with the SOCs you find in modern high spec chromebooks this is something you're unlikely to notice

I'd recommend an HP Chromebook 13 or Samsung Chromebook Pro just because of its high-end construction but if you just need a cheap, simple machine to run Chrome OS on, then you should an Acer Chromebook. Those things are usually super durable and within the sub-$500 range. They're just not very powerful.

I don't have a Chromebook, but I use chromium OS

I'm trying to decide between the Samsung Chromebook plus or pro. I'll probably just get the plus since it's cheaper.

Question for anybody to answer:
Is OS version not the only thing holding back support for Play Store integration? I know that they have a list of supported models, but it utterly baffles me that my older "unsupported" ChromeBook is still getting updates. I'm on v56 as of earlier today.

I've been thinking about just getting a newer one that's supported. However, I cannot justify abandoning my C710, with its proper keyboard and serviceable parts.

I really want to buy one of those 2013 LTE Pixels, but they don't get Play Store support either, apparently. By my skimming of their forums, it seems to be absolutely arbitrary what gets support and what doesn't.

I seriously think google doesn't want to support the older chromebooks just so it makes people buy newer models.

I could've sworn I seen a guy claim that he got the play store running on the original pixel, no idea where I seen that, though.

>OS version not the only thing holding back support for Play Store integration?
Wouldn't a touchscreen be necessary for 99% of apps? From what I can tell, all the new chromebooks with play store support seem to have touchscreens, but I haven't done much digging so idk.

But seriously, is there any significant differences between Android convertibles/tablets and Chromebooks with play store support now that chromebooks can run Android apps?

Now you've got me wanting to do even more research, when I already have too many computers as it is.

>Wouldn't a touchscreen be necessary for 99% of apps?

Shitfuck, you've got a really good point. Well, at least the C740 and Asus Flip don't look too bad. But still, why couldn't there be more models like the C710? That question should stand for all consumer-grade laptops.

>I use mine mainly for uni stuff/facebook/youtube etc

u have bright future son.

>new Pixel 2015 for $400 on Amazon

This cannot be real.

I'm doing the same.

It's based mainly on the kernel version.

I actually just pre ordered the plus. I figure the processor is powerful enough since my phone (Nexus 6p) can browse the web and watch YouTube videos at 1440p just fine, and this has a slightly higher res screen and a more powerful processor/GPU, so the experience should be smooth enough.

Chuck it into le trash xD
