Sup Forums cred

keep backup of pics from vacations/family gatherings, documents from work and other crap, get some movies/series shared on your home network to watch from any tv or computer.
If you have cameras or any home automation you can centralize it there too.

Why not run that stuff on your desktop?

You basically get cloud storage, except:
- You can turn it on and off whenever you like for power saving or based on need.
- You aren't at the behest of a service because they own your shit, so you don't have to think about subscription fee changes.
- You are in control of your shit and nobody else.
- It costs less in the long term than paying for cloud.
- You can access all your pirated shit without caring about getting cucked at the border by those few countries that sell their asses to the copyright cartel.

>Worry about what others do with their computers.
Nice try CIA

I had one in 2006 to save stuff from Uni but it mostly just for fun until I got bored of it.

mail, mumble, ftp, httpd, irc, vpn

>manchilds running useless services to fill emptiness in their life

find a gf

>useless services
I mean, sure if you don't use any of those things (you do) then they would be useless.

media sharing, back up, dvr, another DVR my wife doesn't know about, and email.

You can hide things from your wife but you can't hide things from the government.

>another DVR my wife doesn't know about
r u a cuck?

>home car repair
It's a hobby.

Also probably a secret smoker, having to out fox your own wife must be exhausting

How else will I run my Plex server?

It's a shower cam dumb asses.

As long as they aren't the intended target and I don't save the video on the off chance a minor hops in it's not against the law. I am merely monitoring the bathroom window. Through the shower.

Hosting 24/7 admin-less game servers.

Hated admin abuse as a teen so I'm doing my part.

>It's a shower cam dumb asses.
holy fuck, you are pathetic

...

>It's a shower cam
Kek

>What for?
coat it with dust and your ignorance.

so can vpn to lan from the internet and get to all my files.

>an ugly pedophile sperglord is calling somebody on Sup Forums pathetic

coating my spinning rust in some layers of redundancy.

>tfw the zfs scrub and SMART report are all good

>you don't like spying on your wife then you are an ugly pedophile

>wife
>shower cam
either your a pedo watching a kid (unlikely) or your a massive faggot and are talking about your mom

Shower Cam guy here, no the one who called you/user a pedo.

It's mostly for her sister and nieces. And no, they aren't children.

creepy as fuck
Fucking loser

when a weeaboo calls you a loser you know something is bad.

anime website

You know for a website full of everything from pedophiles to guys jerking off to cartoons of rabbit people you guys sure are getting rustled over a little voyeurism.

Assuming of course it's not the one fat pedophile sperg making all the comments like watching women all soaped up and bending over naked is somehow an odd thing to enjoy.

Holy fuck. Where did your life go so wrong. We're all laughing at you dude

Probably around the time I fucked your mother, it still burns when I pee. She says it adds to the flavor though.

You totally can. In my case my desktop is a big gaming PC so I don't want to run that 24/7. It's much nicer to have a small, quiet, low power server sitting in a closet.

But I thought you had a wife?

openvpn, unifi controller, nextcloud, freeipa.

emby coming soon

mostly Plex/sonarrr/couchpotato setup. Also leave my telegram not there as well as hoard pics from back when I was 14,attractive and the soul or every company with girls swarming me

God damn it what happened

my gf uses said services more than I do, the other day she kept pestering me as to when I'm going to bump up the storage and spin up one of the proliants so her shit could be encoded faster

And?

mostly learning

a lot of linux admins start off by working on home-based projects and getting their foot in the door as a junior admin

What does Linux admin even stand for

not sure what you're asking

The best thing about a home server is that it opens up so many possibilities for your choice of personal-use hardware. A desktop, a laptop, an iPad, a Nexus 6; all are one before the might of a well-implemented backend.

Keep smiling bitch, you're next.

I need to find more uses.

Backups aren't great to keep on desktops, especially if you're a distro hopper, use bleeding edge software or are some sort of autistic ricer.
Anyways, you should already be making offshore backups.

Also, for media, if you have multiple devices, you're gonna need to have both your desktop and for example your TV open at the same time, or you can just have a 24/7 server and the TV open whenever.

I'd do mail but I'm scared I'll mess up and get on a spam list. Also I don't want to get pwned. I've just let Zoho handle my domain.

Anyways, I've wanted to get a Murmur server up since my friends and I have unlimited data on our phones so we can just connect to my server whenever outside. It seems to be the best solution because we've got full control over it and it isn't bloated.

>shower cam
>her sister and nieces
What in god's name

>OpenVPN
How easy is it to setup?

jerking off to 2TB of chinese cartoons

Yeah mail's pretty fucking awful. I would generally recommend against it except that you have to avoid botnet.

1. Central backup of all client computers (10 max). Does it automatically on daily basis with zero input needed from you once you tell WHS what to backup. * Client pc must be on/or in sleep mode
2. Central storage for all documents/movies/music/porn/etc.
3. Stream movies/music/pics to any device thanks to built in DNLA streaming capability (or install Servioo which is free for formats the built in one don't support)
4. Can access server from any web browser over the net to download/upload files. (the connection is encrypted so no one can spy on you). or you can setup an old school FTP server.
5. Support for GPT drives. So add Macrium Reflect (which supports GPT) and now you can grow your storage to like 16TB and safely backup it up. Can also backup the server's os/client backups in case of hdd failure.
No mater what you do, backups are the key. Add a UPS for max data protection so if power fails your server can shutdown before it loses power.

I use mine as a file backup and self-hosted cloud server with OwnCloud.

Streaming porn to my phone desu

How do you start learning how to use Windows Server?

even if you use them, they're useless. it's just that so are you.

Works great for centralizing all your shit across multiple machines.

Like if you have a desktop and a laptop you can use a cheap server to store your media so you don't have to copy back and forth.

>email is useless
>for people without jobs.

...

It's based on Server 2008r2/Win 7 so if your used to them WHS 2011 is easy.

it is dumb as fuck to host email out of a residential connection.

even if your isp allows outbound smtp, businesses with any sort of reputation based email gateway will block it

I've got spare laptops. Laptops are generally low wattage, and they come with a built-in UPS. I run a Plex and Calibre server off of one, and I have nginx forwarding traffic to the different endpoints. It works.

Closest experience I had was creating an Active Directory Domain Server with Samba. Know any good books?

Why not setup windows 10 and add all the disks into a storage pool for a single volume?

>tfw thinking about getting a 2 tb hdd for my server maybe 3 tb
> Don't really want to drop 80 bucks on it
> see this fucking pic
Am i just a poorfag?
Why the fuck do you have all that and how can you afford it plus backup storage?

>not having your own homeserver protecting your e-mails, data, etc

I'd buy/make one myself if i wasn't a poor fuck.

Not to hate on you user but yes, if you can't "drop 80" on a hard drive this probably isn't the hobby for you.

I don't hobby a server, that makes no sense.

I store sit on mine like backups and photos and shit, I only buy what i need. What the fuck do you have that takes up 2 dozen terabytes.
How are you backing it up.

>I need to find more uses.
owncloud
tt-rss

Not a book but you can use
youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA32FE7646B8E5A33
for a decent intro, it's doesn't cover everything new with newer OSs but it gets basics.

If you don't have anything to follow along with setup an account with Azure for their free month thing and you can create VMs for free.

Not that user but I'd need at least 2TB to backup my computer.

...

that's what SETI@Home is for.

Well I've got like 4 tb now for that reason, he has like 50 tb. You want to try backing up 50 tb of shite?

It's probably all anime too.

>owncloud
I thought people were shilling for Nextcloud or something?

>tt-rss
Good find, although I haven't used feed readers in a long while. Also websites with feeds are assholes now because they want those ad shekels so they force you to go to their site if you want the full story. Kills the purpose of a feed reader.

>project management
Will look out for.

>caldav
I just use Google Calendar

>seedbox
Actually already working on it, figuring out how to deploy rtorrent properly without creating a mess, and then rutorrent.

Your personal cloud. You own the data not some corporation. External HDD's aren't a reliable backup storage medium. Bitrot degrades data into noise.
Look up FreeNAS.

A bunch of videos of my sister and law and her daughters taking showers.

For my very own Kate Bot

...

>they force you to go to their site if you want the full story
it's true for news websites and some commercial stuff but blogs usually show full article content in feed, you get media files from podcasts as well which is comfy
there's also a plugin to fetch full page content

My WHS 2011 Server. Ain't much but it does the job. D: - Client Backups, H: - Sys image/Client backups backups in case the C/D drive dies.
N: - Data,pics,porn,etc, G: - Movies,music
Z: - Backup of entire server's drives to NAS device. also includes system image just in case.

This is a blue board user.

>rtorrent
is your server running linux? Just use transmission
the remote transmission gui is wonderful and takes almost no effort to get it up and running

>blank keys
is /mkg/ leaking?

Imgur exists

FreeBSD, but I know transmission is available since I used it on my last install. It was just a little messy, and most of Sup Forums shills for rtorrent anyways, so I'm gonna see if it's really worth it.

It's great for privacy.. especially when you're in crowded areas

Storage of music for the family

Not the same user but I learned this stuff going to a vocational program for IT/Networking.

lolwut. it's easier to look at the blinking cursor and the word being typed out than it is to look at the keyboard that everyone knows the layout to.

>shower cam home server for in laws
holyjesus people like this browse Sup Forums. Thanks for the laugh user

...

...

Mah Nigga.

>I'd need at least 2TB to backup
You mean you aren't backing it up? You can get a 3TB USB hard drive for $100 these days. Set it up before something happens and you lose everything.

BITROT

Doesn't work for password fields senpai

fair enough.
I thought it was going to be a pain too, but I recently set up a small seedbox and was really surprised at how painless it was

>teamspeak server for friends
>mumble for my FLOSS buds
>game server, such as minecraft, csgo, and rust are what i run
>file server, for streaming movies to the tvs in my house (raspberry pis)
>vpn for phone
>mail server for my private domain
>photo backup for phone
>web server
>seedbox
>VPN into neighbors wifi

That's what I use my home server for. All programs running on one machine. Without my home server, I would be useless.

My home server has several tasks:
- It's my router
- serves dns, ntp, bandwidth graphs
- rtorrent seeding constantly
- irc proxy so i get scrollback when i connect and people don't see me part/join every time i crack my laptop
- file server with personal documents like my resume, code, taxes, homework, photos
- backups of all my computers
- TB's of movies, shows, music
- upnp server so my tv and stereo can access all that media

so is there a hardware barrier to entry on a these kinds of things or can it literally be any old piece of shit machine

cause I have a SUPER fucking old family computer sitting somewhere and if I could do something cool with that it'd be neat but I have no idea if it's too shitty for anything
