Newsgroups. Kids these days only know them from pirating stuff (and that's debatable). Back in the day they WERE the internet, the Sup Forums and everything "social media" bundled together.

Binaries killed usenet as a discussion platform. I'll never forgive them for that.
I miss more what Geocities and sites like that represented. A simple self-expression. It's why I look back fondly on MySpace.
In fact, I miss when web sites were mostly html and css. Imagine how fast the web would be now without all the bloated trash on top.
I wish the wild west days of the internet lasted longer.
As soon as women got online, and as a result social media became popular, and giving out your name online became the norm, it was over.
i remember in 1998, i joined a porn affiliate program that paid 20 cents per click then spammed the link on IRC for a few days and made $200 bucks.

Last 2-5 years there's a resurrection of that. They are mainly HTML5+CSS. Sure they are heavier but mainly via HTML5 graphics and tricks but they try to keep a "single page" design which is supposedly "load everything early and manipulate it on the browser level later".
PS. I remember them before CSS existed but oh well.
>single page design
say goodbye to google traffic
I've found that "minimal" designs still have a shit load of stuff on top that makes things more complex than they need to be. I'm not saying we should make all pages look like stallman.org or danluu.com but there's a happy middle ground to be reached.
Gopher is so cool. Love that.

Forget all of this shit.
Do you remember fucking COKEMUSIC?
Shit was the coolest thing ever. I remember the first time I learned of the place, it was like habbo (habbo had just then become habbo, the first one was finnish and called hotelli kultakala. Used to be one of the first people there), but with cooler graphics and Americans. It was so much cooler, it had this sequencer to make music and you could play them at public venues. It was just so much more than habbo. All the furniture items were cooler, the characters were better, it was just something else. I spent HOURS there and I was so sad to know it had been closed down with no way to access it anymore.
In the early 00s there were no pedos in these services, not as widely. Kids could just be kids and this was something so different from cassettes and FM radio (not to mention AM), in many aspects it was way ahead of its time. Because we were used to so much less back then, I would go as far as to argue it was more immersive than current VR technology. It's something hard to explain to people who weren't there but I'm sure at least some of you were.
Habbo was cool too, during daytime I used to be there (on the Finnish one) because all the Americans were sleeping. That was super immersive too back then. I think this was a couple of years before. The family computer we had ran a 166 Mhz Pentium MX and was struggling with habbo so hard.
For many reasons I would like to go back. It was so much better than the shit we have now. I have access to everything now but it bores me too much and I can't enjoy anything anymore.
Why does the internet feel so fucking boring and sterile now? I feel like I've been going to the same 6 or 7 sites for years, but when I was younger I was excited to find new things and sites I'd never heard of.
Maybe it's just because everything feels so centralised now, or maybe the wonder of the internet left me as I kept browsing it so much.
