Sounds about right.
Redpill me why winrar is worse than 7zip
You dont have to pay for either of these two if you dont want to.
ok
rar format is simply inferior in every way to 7z. also it's proprietary, but even if you don't take this aspect into consideration, it'still inferior.
Winrar behind 7z's compression by about 2% in 2010 and more now + encrypted file names built in so you can send archives over botnets like gmail containing .dll files without them rejecting your archive
also it never nags you for not buying it
I made some rar archives a while back. Will 7z be able to see them and access them normally? Can I also basically do the same shit with it?
If so, I am gonna make the switch.
yes
7-ZIP comes with unrar module, so probably yes.
7z format is god tier but holy shit their 7zip GUI is hot trash.
In terms are finding hard to find music and albums:
.rar is God
>zip
>proprietary
nani?
You can repair your .rar files with recovery record feature, though.
>Not using .kgb
>not using squashfs
it's like you enjoy compressing already compressed data
>not using .paq
Fags.
also .iso
I still use winrar over 7zip for one really stupid reason.
You can't navigate back and forth with the mouse thumb buttons in 7zip, once I can do that I will switch.
let me point it out to you this way: given they both have top-tier compression going on, but 7zip (compression algo and implementations) is opensource and free while rar is behind patents and other legal bullshit, why would you ever go for rar? It offers no practical advantage over 7zip and has a bunch of legal disadvantages.
Winrar will always hold a special place in my heart because you can use a resource editor and just delete the nag window and the program doesn't give a single shit.
Trying to do a partial extract from a 7z with a decent number of files sucks as it has to go through every other file first.
I use WinRAR as a GUI and zip as an archive because who the fuck cares about bandwidth in 2017?
>*.*.*
Why
Why not?
>God Tier:
z
How the fuck should i use in cli to reach "god level"?
7z is way too slow compared to rar.
Nothing wrong with it. It's actually better than WinRAR's.
You can choose to have better compression or better speed.
However there's not too much difference in compression... But the time difference it's larger than that.
>Having such shitty internet that your bits get flipped in transit.
I want third worlders to go and stay go.
Since when is zip proprietary?
Why would you ever need to use the GUI?
> pacman -S zip unzip
it just works
real deal:
god tier
zip, gzip, bz2
interesting tier
xz
meh tier
7z
fuck you tier
arj, rar
what is Sup Forums's opinion on .jar?
frustrating invetion
kek
I just use deflate(zip/gzip) for everything. Higher compression just wastes resources including time
Stop using compression method other than lzma.
>2017
>Using WinRAR
I bet you plebs use Windows 10 as well
I have to extract it twice
Tar is only used when there's 2+ files that need to be compressed together. Not all files need to be tar'd
because UNIX philosophy
Thanks gonna try it out.
winrar is faster and supports more formats than 7zip
linux fags and poor fags just mad
>.egg
>ITT: Retards arguing over Archive containers when the only thing that matters is the compression algorithm used when creating said archive
It's like comparing MKV to MP4...
Plain old .zip is not proprietary, and .jar is just a .zip file. The .rar format is still garbage, however.
As someone who uses 7z and rar, why should I use 7z exclusively? RAR has the recovery record, meaning it won't brick itself when bit rot fucks up part of the file, unlike 7z.
i use rar cuz of rr
not gonna switch to 7z until it's got something similar
Pretty neat, set it at 1% and over wrote 1-5 byte chunks all over a 2GB file and it recovered perfectly, not sure how far you can push it though
I haven't seen so much wrong in an OP in some time.
Good job dipshit
Good job dipshit you just compared archive formats to streaming compression tools.
The fuck it is. It's functional and useful, not designed for degenerate faglords like you. Fuck off with your Material Design/Metro UI faggotry.
I use 7z but when you compress some photos to send in an email to other people they always say i cant open the file. I would like to say use fucking google and look up what program to use but i end up going back to rar
cab
It compresses worse. On the other hand, WinRAR has recovery records and volumes, and a much better Windows GUI. Also, pic related was super cool back when people cared about stuff like installers.
.zip is Public Domain you fucktard
