Disaster/emergency preparedness

Sup Sup Forums

I'm preparing for a possible emergency or disaster and I'm contemplating what sorts of electronic stuff that would be good to have in such a situation.

Currently, I've identified this equipment:
- A portable radio (being able to run on batteries)
- Portable solar charging panel (enables charging of any device, through usb)
- Powerbank

Any other things electronic-wise you can think of that would be good to have in case of an emergency/disaster?
I got most basic stuff covered, like water filtration, fire-starting et.c.

include one of those dirt cheap chinese two way radios.

You mean baofengs. for example?

Is it plausible that such radios could be used to communicate with first responders (police, fire dept et.c.)?

I don't have anyone else to talk to, so ronery ;_;

bump

When I was out of state for work wondered into a closing electronic shop, shelfs were almost entirely empty. Saw a power inverter with a car charger plug in for those old lighter/electric ports, and some clamps to just straight up hook it up to the battery. Unit was really just designed for car batteries haven't seen another like it was just big enough I thought it'd take up too much space that I didn't get it, was on sale too. Fuckin really regret skipping that over would of been really handy.

My car has an inverter built in, so I can plug my laptop or any low power appliance

You have to be careful with the battery

recently picked up a 1000w 1200w peak inverter gas generator. its really nice and it was 80 bucks.
its a bit loud though but it would be nice to run my computer when the power cuts out with a extension cord. Or running all the lights in the house with the curtains open to show off my electricity while the rest sits in darkness!

Well partially I wanted it for a car but I also had a spare battery. In an emergency like a disaster who knows what other kind of car batteries might be around. Like I got a spare car battery and a battery charger laying around so if I found a power supply I could recharge it even if they're not built like a deep cycle battery to be recharged a lot and drained like that. In an emergency though a potential traveling power supply like that in a pinch could just make life a lot more comfortable for a bit.

SDR usb dongle
raspberry pi 3
usb battery bank youtube.com/watch?v=1_E3F6IdcRc
waterproof solar panel on the back of your bag
screen
waterproof enclosure for the pi + battery bank
cheap tupperware or fishing storage cases with rubber seals would work
a mouse in case you want to actually use the thing

strap the whole thing to your wrist with leather if you really want to look like a git and roleplay fallout

OP, if you're serious, look into minimalism

reddit.com/r/minimalism
theminimalists.com/21days/

I started my path to becoming a minimalist in November last year, I've sold so much stuff that I've earned beyond $2k, thrown 3 full trash bags out with random stuff, and have made either 4 or 5 goodwill trips

I know you may think I am trying to tickle your pickle or something, but I'm totally serious - becoming minimalist totally solves this problem for you, and I personally have been in multiple natural disasters (prior to this lifestyle choice though) and I can honestly say that with the way I've pared my things down now, I would be able to GTFO in an hour or less if I do not take any furniture

by the way there are many speakers/writers about this lifestyle - I personally found the content on the 2nd link to have the best methods to get someone started on this path, but do know they are self-promoters that want you to buy their book to tell you how to stop buying so much stuff

-seeds for all types of vegetables and fruits
-hunting knife
-firearm or crossbow, whichever you can get where you live
-radio
-ebook reader so you'll have plenty of stuff to read and you won't have to carry a laptop

I can GTFO from in an hour or less too if there is a crisis? Whats minimalism has to do with that?

Many of the things people have are unnecessary, and we're likely living consumerist driven lifestyles due to all the advertising - More so in the US than in Europe there, and I'm not trying to talk out of my ass, I've lived in both continents

consumerist lifestyle = more shit

yeah consumerism is shit but how do you achive a comfortable living space without your familiar books and other irrelevant items around you. even though im young I never fell into minimalism meme and always were more comfortable in grandma styled homes. I just wonder what did you had to change in your mindset and how did you do it.

after a work injury I blew through my entire checking account as I was feeling depressed, I couldn't exercise or do anything without pain, I lost all my muscle and gained 30 pounds of fat

someone recommended minimalism to me after i complained about having bought so much stuff and still didn't feel better

Also I've been in multiple natural disasters, and moved every 2 years during childhood so that helped too, I didn't have that much attachment to material things or locations to begin with

- a 2m/70cm handheld with extra batteries aka what most of you punks call "a Baofeng" because they're so cheap in price, in emergency situations Ham radio operators come out like roaches in the dark and even if you don't have a license in such a situation you can still help them or they might be able to help you because of the comms, get extra accessories (multiple batteries, chargers, antennas, cases, etc)

- a shortwave radio of some kind, preferably a Sony or Grundig unit that covers from 100 kHz to 30 MHz so it'll handle the CB radio range in the 27-28 MHz area and some rolled wire (speaker wire would work just fine) for the antenna and some clips to mount it if needed - even tying a torroid aka ferrite core or a brick to one end and tossing it into a tree to get it elevated would help dramatically for signal propagation

- an actual CB radio, whether a battery powered handheld or a mobile rig (+12VDC) and appropriate antennas - they're not called "The Radios of Armageddon" for no good reason, they'll survive most anything (even an EMP burst) if it's an older model from the 1970s and early 1980s before things got really heavily constructed of silicone - think of that with respect to cars as well: pre-electronic ignition cars will survive an EMP hence them being so popular with Preppers nowadays

- you mentioned the solar panel thing, find one that is foldable and can output up to about 45 watts, usually found for around $75-100, get two if you can

- 12V car batteries, deep cell models designed for marine use are best

- flashlights, lots of flashlights, LED models are the best nowadays because of the long battery life and of course batteries, lots of batteries, and get some rechargeables as well since you'd have the solar panel(s)

- a Kindle or two or even three (redundancy is crucial in survival situations), preferably a Kobo since Kindles can't handle ePub which is the superior eBook format, and a shitload of eBooks on a wide variety of survival info.

>torroid aka ferrite
what the shit, if you mean iron why wouldn't you just say iron?

The shortwave radio recommendation there was for a receiver only as shortwave transceivers can be rather large and unwieldy in terms of mobility. Small portable shortwave receivers from Sony and Grundig are remarkably capable devices nowadays, but personally I would again say look someplace for something older, like a shortwave radio sold by RadioShack many years ago, like the one pictured, is primarily analog in nature and would itself survive an EMP too.

Considering when the shit hits the fan nukes are going to fly, if you're not willing to just stand out and wait for one to vaporize you but instead decide you want to survive the events if possible then avoiding actual electronics gear is a must.

I know that the recommendation I made about the eBook reader kinda goes contrary to that but you have to at least try to have some source of information you can refer to, a disaster library if you will, and wrapping eBook readers in multiple layers of aluminum foil could theoretically protect them from an EMP even in close proximity (Faraday cage kind of thing) - just being turned off isn't enough in such a situation.

Obviously someone in a survival situation can't carry dozens of real actual paper books around with them nor hundreds of pages of printouts so an eBook reader would be the one thing (aside from the Ham handhelds) that I'd say is something worth the extra effort to acquire and protect.

Also, with respect to the age thing - pre-silicon (I said silicone earlier, my bad, a typo) days with ICs being in control of most every aspect of the device - there are older Icom/Kenwood/Yaesu and other manufactured Ham radio handhelds for 2m/70cm (that's 144-148 MHz and 420-450 MHz for those not in the know) and they were purely analog devices as well. They would have knobbed dials at the top where you would literally roll it to change the frequency, and they'd survive an EMP easily.

Check pawn shops and thrift stores for the old stuff, and Hamventions.

This fucking meme list.

If you have no clue how to farm the apocalypse is not a good time to start. Recommending seeds for a SHTF bag is retarded 99% of the time because most people have no clue what goes into growing something.

Because they're not called iron cores, you fucking moron.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrite_core

Ferrite is a composite material with some iron in it, it's not IRON.

>calls something retarded cause retards don't know how to use it
wow truly smart thinking right there

>- flashlights, lots of flashlights, LED models are the best nowadays because of the long battery life and of course batteries, lots of batteries, and get some rechargeables as well since you'd have the solar panel(s)
Flashlights are okay but those should really be a limited use thing. Candles are much better since they generate heat and you can collect the wax to make more candles if you get crafty. That way you don't resort to burning a can of lard as a candle and eating up all the light batteries.
>The guy recommending LED flashlights over candles calling me a moron.

Oh no the apocalypse is happening I better start planting my seeds and wait 2 or 3 months for something to eat

All your electronics would go dead unless you have an EMP shield. Get an ammo box and insulate it so you can safely store your devices. Get a small laptop and store any data with CDs or M-Disks.

>Oh no the apocalypse is happening I better start planting my seeds and wait 2 or 3 months for something to eat
Where did i say you had to wait? you're making assumptions out of your ass like the retarded mongoloid you are, i also cited packing a firearm or crossbow clearly for hunting.
Also a dozen pack of seeds fit on your pocket and stuff like tomatoes or potatoes don't take much effort to tend to after planting them.
I'd like seeing you get shot by a nigger when you return to the city to look for food cause your canned trash ran out and you can't hunt shit.

>blah blah blah you don't know how to plant it
you're a retard if you're preparing for the apocalypse and still don't know how to farm and again you're a mongoloid making assumptions that it's soooo hard to learn which it's not
>blah blah blah you have to wait
well duh faggot that doesn't mean you can't take canned stuff and hunt as well

you literally have no arguments and keep repeating the same bullshit

> jack booted thug employed by someone or another
yeah sure after he shoots you in the face so he doesn't have to feed some dumb useless retard like you

Didn't say candles weren't a potential but for portability flashlights are better. What are you gonna do if it's a torrential fucking downpoor, use waterproof candles or something?

And yes, they do exist, and guess what, they use LEDs, picture relevant (and they last much longer than real candles of an equivalent size and provide more useful light).

And yes, you're a moron.

Why are you so butt hurt?
What are you going to be doing... planting your seeds during a torrential fucking downpoor?

A low power laptop and a 5TB external hdd.

It's the apocalypse, so a global collapse of the internet is to be expected. Most libraries will be missing the books you want and if you try to go to a library you'll likely not make it in and out alive.

Put a copy of wikipedia on the hdd, a collection of survival, engineering, agriculture, chemistry and medical books (there are huge collections of these, hundreds of gigs of pdfs), put a tb or two of scientific pdfs on there from libgen, and fill the rest with music and porn. Information is valuable in a scenario like this. Bring a sufficient solar panel to run it all.

On the old car note:

Learn how to distill alcohol, and what's needed for a car to run well on ethanol for a long time.

or

Get a wood gas converter, and get a compressor setup so you can store large amounts of it at a time.
