We do not talk about the music as it is but how it's created and what we use and how to help
others get better

1 simple rule I hope you can guys do, please don't be assholes to those who
have a different perspective on another DAW, no matter what it is or how shitty
it is. I know there are some very laughable ones out there but ya know...
So please just be as helpful as you can.

TFW broke user :(
I would love to try them out

Half of that shit isn't even midi compatible, they're just being show pieces all set up there
Is he selling them? Because he's not using them

...

...

Sup user. Aspiring song writer here. What are those separate pieces all in a single rack there on the right? I see those in studios and home studios. Are they standalone effect filters or something?

>Half of that shit isn't even midi compatible
Just use CV/gate to midi converter

Roland girl is awesome

They're rack synthesizers.

Logic 9

Rock and garage rock
No genre. I'm still crap and still learning, though I've done some good stuff with folk.
Actually changing up to Reaper
Default Reaper Synth. So freaking easy to use.
Yes. Going nowhere is fun.
Bonus: do you want fries with that kiddie script?

>>What DAW is yours?
Ardour.

About 12.

I mostly piano, so classical, but otherwise lo-fi hiphop and trap.

Just messing around is fun.

Nah.
>>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?
Casioton 405, mostly just because it's wood. Plugging it into a delay with high feedack and a fuzz sounds cool though.

I'm not trying to get anywhere.

Tell me who the girl is in the OP.

If only I knew user. I found her on google

I use Renoise rewired into Ableton 8.

Renoise for sequencing drums, bass, synths, Ableton for sampling and mixing. I will never upgrade beyond Ableton 8 because they did some retarded shit with the file browser.

Nice. This means that you route a keyboard through them in order to play it?

yes

Anyone know a good primer on using JACK? I'm finding it to be quite the exceptional pain in the ass

Thanks

Same, except completely opposite, I use Renoise for sample editing and micro effects, and Ableton for the sequencing because I'm not autistic enough for 100% renoise

don't you die on me

Used Propellerhead Reason for years, but it's p much going to shit
I try to learn Ableton Live but it has a weird workflow

>FL Studio
>About 3-4 years now

JACK is always a pain in the ass. If you think your troubles are had just getting it to run, try actually using it.

>Implying people with thousands of dollars of vintage synths can't figure out how to use control voltage.
user what do you think lets modular synths talk to other modules?

Rack gear is really common in studios. Some stuff like compressors/eq's/effects don't have a ton of complicated options available so just a single panel has more or less everything needed in a 1U/2U space. Most of them have MIDI control available so you can either configure a working set up through your DAW, or use a controler VST like Ctrlr that let's you access the functions easily. Even keyboard synths with lots of buttons, knobs, and sliders still require you to dive into sometimes complex menus to access specific functions like setting modulation sources, filter slope, or line out voltage so rack synths really aren't any more difficult to figure out than any other VST or full paneled synth.

Probably not the place to ask, but how do you guys get into FM/RM?
I've been.playing around with Sytrus on FLS 10 bit I still don't quite get how to use it.
Or do you recommend another software/plugin?

RM is pretty usable in general since it's predictable.
FM synthesis is really hit or miss.
FM8 is a much better synth for FM than sytrus, and is easily the most popular dedicated FM synth. There's a ton of tutorials for it all over youtube so check it some out and see if you like it.

Okay, will do. Thanks a lot.
Does it work with further versions or other DAWs? I'm actually thinking of going back to LMMS because muh free software and I don't really remember if it had any FM synthesis plugins

I am all for FOSS but in the audio world there's a stupid amount of cross-licensing that makes it difficult to do anything serious (gee fucking thanks, Steinberg) outside of commercial programs. FM8 will work will most commercial DAWs and across platforms. I haven't looked closely at FOSS alternatives for DAWs lately so I could be wrong but last I checked it's like putting your dick to a cheese grater to get something both functional and usable up and running.

Guess I'll just have to Google a "full mega pack one link Ecks di" like every normie spic does, then.
Anyways, thanks for the help. Hopefully I'll have something done soon.

Going to switch to bitwig this year and start doing all my processing through hardware eventually
I am an ableton guy tho who makes vgm/acid/electro music
Been a music maker since i was 11
Fav synth is abletons operator
I love fm synth so thats my first big purchase

Fav track of mine

You probably have a synth in mind already, but I feel it would help to explain what actually makes a synth an FM synth rather than just having FM functionality. It's all about the per voice envelope generators. This feature is why you don't see analog FM synths at all really, because the circuitry for it along with having multiple independently shaped voices ends up being a lot of components. It's why they're all digital and the FM modulars take up a whole wall with a ton of the exact same EG modules. You probably already knew this, but it's useful info to other anons who might have been thinking "oh it has an FM function, it's an FM synth!"...

The fuck is this?

SunVox

Any SC links?

I just want to create some remixes of songs from childhood shows/anime/video games

I literally can't find my way around in the DAWs... I thought there'd be a panel where I'd be able to put the notes in sequence and have the computer "play" it... Everywhere I go on the internet its soundcard recomendations, "get yourself a piano keyboard", "how to record your guitar" as if I knew how to play shit

Yeah I cant play instruments so I want the computer to play them for me... How do I do it?

What you might be looking for is a Piano Roll.
Try FL Studio or LMMS, they're the starter level, user friendly entry to the world of DAWs

LMMS is ass. It tries too hard to be FL Studio and misses the mark by miles. I really tried to like LMMS 'cause I wanted to switch to Linux for my DAW's OS but no.

Energy XT is far better.

Do expensive audio interfaces sound better than cheap ones?

The thing to be concerned about is the sampling rate and signal to noise ratio. Some have additional features like built-in compressors for every channel or having a dedicated clock that can be sent to other devices to make sure everything stays in time. The differences between them is more than just "sounding better" but for most people it wouldn't matter if they had a cheap Focusrite Scarlett or some super high-end interface. Figure out the features you really need and pick accordingly.

What about ardour?

Or hell, even supercollider? I know programming and can deal with that interface, I don't need "familiar" interfaces like pianos since I never used one

i do most of the stuff in ableton live lite (kek) because i more make sketches rather than full songs. i rarely go over 6 tracks, but i think the ideas are generally pretty good. their default instruments and synths are honestly pretty good.
soundcloud.com/ma-san-man-of-seafood (feedback appreciated -- or if you wanna take one of these and make it for real just throw me 30% of the profits and we're good)
i have some mid 2000's techno, hipster indie dance pop stuff, classical, and garbage.
for guitar work, i use reaper and a trusty shure sm 57. paired with that i have superior drummer 2 which is honestly amazing.

Well, choosing between system configurations is hard without knowing the set of parameters and understanding what they influence. For example I had no idea sampling rate was a property of the sound card

Where is this explained?

i hear good things about that mayne. keep it up.

Hoping this next part doesn't sound like an advertisement, just trying to be helpful. =[
If you're really serious about buying one and don't want to miss something important you can always opt to call a sales engineer at Sweetwater and they'll be able to guide you through making a choice. Their sales people are probably the most well informed about gear and the company has great return policies.

Switched to Linux and looking for a good DAW (used to use Cubase). Any recommendations?

>>What DAW is yours?
FL

Anyone else here primarily a live engineer?
>UK based
>mostly clubs, smaller gigs

Funny enough, FL does work in wine.

I already am doing this later on having got nowhere.
Its totally for myself, I don't think anyone has ever heard anything I've recorded.

Well it needs to have 4 operators
I know a little bit of how it works
Looking for algorithmic based fm operator synth with eg modeling stuff

Fruity Loops is really a shit.

REAPER RULES:

if that's your opinion that' ok.
Whatever works for you the best.

did you guys know reaper was actually ported to linux

>be reaper devs
>make daw that fits in 10mb
>actual handmade portable and fast code, no RandomWindowsLibrary#22201398
>it works great on windows
>it worgs great on linux under wine
>decide to make linux build because your code is that great

reaper is the sublime text of daws

What's the simplest, most basic, DAW that even a monkey could use?

I just wanna screw around for fun.

Literally FL.
People think that FL is retard proof. But it can be as simple as you want or as complicated as you want.

Will vst plugins work, though?

>What DAW is yours?
Started with FL Studio 8 back in 2010. using Ableton Live now.

>How long you been on it?
I've been using Ableton for about 4 years now

>How long have you been into music?
producing? I'd say since 2010. That's when I took it up as a hobby

>What genre do you play with the most?
experimental electronic music? getting myself off the "grid" when it comes to drumming, so I guess later work has been slightly wonky.

>What Genre do you think you are best at?
The one mentioned above. For a while now, I just have my projects set up like a sandbox and just mess around. sometimes things work out into actual tracks.

>Have you thought about changing up to something else?
Not really. I've been looking into live performing stuff though. I guess the term "controllerism" is a better term to use. Triggering effects and loops with my midi controllers makes jamming out solo or with friends pretty fun.

>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?
Serum. After that, it's a tie between Massive and Sylenth1
Honorable mention: Substance from Output.

>Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?
Not really driving myself to take it anywhere past a hobby. If anything, I'd like to make a little app game one day and make the music for it though.

Now here's some little gems I'd like to share with you anons:

+ Cthulhu ( youtube.com/watch?v=3t2yD1kX2_w )
>play chords on the fly. it has the ability to play arps as well.

+ Movement ( youtube.com/watch?v=Qf2ORf2qY2s )
>multi effects engine. cool ass shit.

+ Melodics ( youtube.com/watch?v=qd83DrWIxSM )
>Finger drumming software. helps build coordination when playing drums live. definitely pays off and can save time when producing drum loops

I can't do without Ableton's warping for non-percussive sample work. You should definitely try sequencing drums at least in Renoise, once you get used to the keyboard shortcuts its so much quicker, you are basically just typing music.

>I will never upgrade beyond Ableton 8 because they did some retarded shit with the file browser.
I wish I didn't, holy fucking shit it's awful.

Try a tracker like renoise. Programmers seem more at home with weird vertical step sequencing than standard DAW midi/audio sequencing in my experience.

Puredata is the shit, honestly for anyone that wants to learn audio DSP and build their own synths/fx/sequencers/performance patches I highly recommend it. After spending a coupke years solely working on it, moving back to DAWs and soft synths was super easy and I had a way deeper understanding of how everything works. I built a granulizer that granulizes both audio and video which was probably my greatest accomplishment with it.

>tracker
>tfw discovered module files
>musical instructions with the sound samples included
>so much good music

m.youtube.com/watch?v=eclMFa0mD1c

Thank you so much man. This looks exactly to how video game music works... This is fucking amazing and exactly what I'm looking for

>0:58

my fucking dick m8

...

Glad to be of help. If its chiptune stuff you want to do you might want to check out deflemask.com/ its a free (donationware) tracker with emulations of a load of console sound chips. Never used it myself but it looks pretty cool.

Tracktion 5
It's free, it's also simple and clean

Awesome!! Yeah I love chiptunes too, years ago I hacked around with the SNES sound chip trying to extract the music and modify it

go to /trash/ hopefully

I haven't used Ardour in forever because it was audio only back then. I know there's a sequencer nowadays but I haven't been bothered to look.

Seriously, energyXT is surprisingly decent for the price. It's not my go-to DAW (that's FL Studio), but it's nice to have.

>20 AMD vs Nvidia threads
>Plugging a room full of electronic tone generators into a computer isn't "technology" related enough

Old school or modern days' drum and bass?

Anyone here do trap, I'm talking Gucci mayn and Future type of beats?
>i have no one to collab with :[

lol

What's the best synth for making Eurobeat ?

Eurobeat was mostly made with terrible early digital synths. So almost any non-analog modeled VST will do. Massive and Sylenth1 likely have a ton of cheesy free patches out there for eurobeat already. You could probably preset your way to whatever sounds you want, since generic sounding digital synths are plentiful and even come free most the time.
