Why do GPUs have a short life span? Do they make them faulty on purpose due to planned and intrinsic obsolescence?
Whenever I have a laptop with an AMD or Nvidia GPU with no screen output, I've always managed to fix it by covering the fan vent with a towel and let it overheat till it shuts down. Then when I turn it on, the screen works. Where is this solder located in the GPU and why is it such a common problem for laptops?

I held on to my last three GPU's for 4 years each. Sure they got worse as they aged, but they didn't fail totally and they were replaced with much better GPU's.
What did they change in modern GPU design that makes them die so quickly? I still have a GeForce 4 and an ATI Rage 128 that are working and I've used them longer than my GeForce 6600GT and Radeon 4830 that died in just a few years.

More transistors in less space, takes less of a defect to cause more of a problem.
Integrated graphics are only slightly worse than consoles at this point and you don't have to pay for online with PC. You could have skipped out on a console, spend $200 more on a PC with even just Intel Iris graphics or a gtx 1050/AMD equivalent, and had a more powerful machine than a console.

They're not my laptops, literally the most GPU intensive things they've been used for is youtube, if not windows aero.
Usually it's just the heat/cold cycle fucking up the contacts, that's why the heatgun trick is so successful at fixing these things.

My 8800GTS is still great powering my grandmother's computer. My 570 GTX is still great powering my friend's "media" rig. Now I'm on a 1070gtx

I use Coreboot and I've fully disabled the management engines. I don't have any non-free software installed. I also don't use systemd, but rather I rely on a BSD style init and shell scripts that are easy to understand and modify, giving me more control. Router runs OpenWrt. I'm also a pass user, so I don't have to allow any bullshit JS from jewgle for that captcha trash. I also bought the pass using a gift card that I bought with cash.

AMD and Nvidia don't even make anything besides the chips and reference boards, which most cards don't use. There's a good chance any card failing had to do with the board partner.

Has anyone had iGPUs fail on them when used for gaymen? Considering using something with just Iris graphics as they're passable today but don't want to replace the entire cpu in a few years, if that's what'll happen might as well get a dedicated GPU

Intel has the most experience on the 14nm process and has the most rigid quality control because they own their own fabs. As long as you stick with Intel you should be good.
