And I guarantee you have to change things, a lot. Many words and expressions don't translate, you have to always rephrase everything. Slang is almost impossible to translate too.

As a result all style gets lost. Substance without style isn't something you want to read.
Some authors you shouldn't even bother with. Céline comes to mind, can't imagine anyone reading it not in French and actually getting it. Or even just enjoying it.
