My SansaClip of five years didn't survive a bike crash today, and I noticed that SanDisk apparently discontinued them at some point. What's the portable music player of choice that I can get for around the same price and throw RockBox on?
PMPs General
Just look for another on the cheap. The list of RB supported devices is pretty short.
That's the thing, even second-hand ones at this point cost as much as three times what I got my old one for new.
Fiio M3?
>and rockbox
dont know
I'm so fucking mad the are no new sansas unles you are willing to pay $100 for a used to shit one.
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
And there's no rockbox support for newer stuff like fiios.
REEEEEEEE
Can't you just source a new oled panel or something and replace it?
I'm happy with my cheap chinky x-02
Get an old android phone 2.3 I think and download the rockbox app, it works.
>I'm happy with my cheap chinky x-02
I heard the ui is shit and sluggish?
Thoughts?
Does it support 128gb sc cards?
This, you can get a Clip screen for like $7
UI is shit but you get used to it. It's pretty good for the ~$12-20, used it as my primary music player for three months before I upgraded to a refurb Clip Zip ($70). The manufacturer refurbs from the happy merchants in Israel are actually pretty great, dunno if he's still selling his stock on ebay.
I can confirm the X02 works with 128GB microSD, just format to FAT32.
>I heard the ui is shit and sluggish?
Ye but I usually don't need to interact with it since I usually listen a whole album, but ask on /CSG/ because they know how to flash the agptek firmware or something and it's supposed to be better or something
>Thoughts?
It was $13 on sale it does the job for how cheap it is
>Does it support 128gb sc cards?
Ask /CSG/ I'm using a 64 GB shark and it works, but seriously ask CSG rockbox is kind of obsolete and there's really good quality chink pmps, check the infographic on the op first
I've got an xduoo x3 and have been liking it.
thx, will buy one then.
Are you okay user? Not too banged up I hope. We're all worried about you.
Get a iPod Nano 2nd gen, iPod Mini or pre 6g iPod classic
7th gen Classics have had Rockbox support for years.
>Get a iPod Nano 2nd gen, iPod Mini
these have like 4gb of storage, no thx
>or pre 6g iPod classic
too bulky, defeats the purpose of a pmp.
So get a Mini and upgrade the storage
noice!!!
If it's just the screen that's borked, replace the screen.
Seriously, it's worth it, since there's no good media players any more.
>buying apple
I'd rather buy a chink player
>avoiding products based on the logos they bear
jz port is taking forever but there is one (1) guy working on it.
Still holding on my M2 for the port.
apple makes good hardware
overpriced. produced in chinese sweatshops. but still good
their audio is really good- especially on their phones
if you have an iphone, use that. it's better than any other pmp out there. it sounds better than most DACs
normally I don't advocate for giving up when it comes to privacy, but seriously, when it comes to phones it does not matter at all. inherently the system is flawed and nothing is safe. I'll shill for apple until they stop making good products
sorry that it doesn't answer your question perfectly, op
>avoiding overpriced products based on their logo
Thats better
>if you have an iphone, use that.
>using a phone to play music
you need to go back >>>/reddit/
We're talking used products, dumbass. Apple hasn't sold the iPod Mini in years. These things can be had for under $20
>trying to pretend the original iPod wasen't a great product line
>Arbitrary proprietary software for syncing music connection
Iriver devices were better.
The better hardware was worth the worse software. It's irrelevant now that Rockbox can be installed on the best iPods and even with the official firmware you don't need iTunes.
>implying the iPod shuffle wouldn't get an A++ and a glitter cloud to the face at the Bauhaus school
Xduoo x3 is probably the best atm unfortunately
>Whatchu want?
>Good hardware with a braindead button-layout
>Say no mo'.
Eh, there are other choices.
Uh, why does the brand matter if you're buying it used, upgrading the hardware and using Rockbox on it?
A pretty nicely set up iPod mini will probably end up cheaper than even the worst of beat up nice sansas
"Walnut V2" or something on aliexpress
ebay.com
like even buying one readily upgraded isn't the worst of deals when compared to some other options
What hardware does the mini run on?
There might be issues with rockbox if it's too weak.
I'd rather a proper DAP and an amp.
>There might be issues with rockbox if it's too weak.
There's two generations of iPod Minis, one of them can be Rockboxed.
rockbox-site lists both, though.
Yeah I got messed up. Only one generation can be upgraded to a CF card, both can be Rockboxed.
found tuts which mention both generations to be upgradeable.
Huh, every one I've seen said only the second gen worked
>tfw my 80gig ipod is still going strong
>he hasn't upgraded to an SSD or SD card
>ebay.com
>Never purchase from him!!!
Got it in the mail,it had no case with it,the guts of it shake loosely in the shell of it and it will not turn off..
Thanks user. I'll definitely drop 3 figgies on this
Just uae your phone you idiot
see
Just eat a dick, you piece of shit.
Your phone is as good of a music player as any cheapy you could buy
No it's not
>touchscreen bullshit
>less storage
>much larger
too big
>>>/reddit/
Well luckily mine isn't a cheapy and my phone can't play music properly.
>posting about phones in a PMP thread
what is wrong with you?
Like em or not touchscreens are here to stay might as well rip that bandaid off now and get a phone with an SD slot all the aorage you like
control your music-playing touchscreen-phone without looking at the screen.
go ahead. dare. double dare. triple dare.
I already have a phone with an SD card. Touchscreens still suck for PMPs, which is exactly why I use a real PMP instead of my phone. Well that and storage thing. Look, you may be content using that bullshit, but don't go whining that not everyone is.
Of course that isnt possible dont be daft you should havw enougb music to last you a few days anyway
>having more music is an excuse to not want control your PMP
What the fuck are you talking about?
Set it on ahuffle and go and besides name one PMP where i can download a podcast or an album on the spot
Android players.
There have been more lately ever since Sony started the trend.
But those still relay on touchscreens
They have dedicated playback controls.
>Set it on ahuffle
Yeah, and what about when a song that you don't feel like listening to comes on?
>besides name one PMP where i can download a podcast or an album on the spot
Why would I care about downloading albums on the fly when I already have every song I could possibly think of and more on my PMP?
>podcasts
I don't listen to them so I couldn't possibly care less about being able to download them. Even if I did, not having to use a touchscreen would most definitely be worth having to wait a few hours to download a podcast. Again, just because you're okay with it doesn't mean everyone is.
I have this thing. Only thing that annoys me is that there is a pause inbetween songs, which kills transitions that blend into eachother.
forgot pic
That's the one when they started using shitty chips.
can any computer wizard here help me retrieve or at least get a screenshot of this deleted tweet?
twitter.com
ive tried everything, but not luck. just a screen-shot would be good enough. thank you in advance.
...
OP is a clip zip, yours is a clip jam
one is shit, the other isn't.
guess which one yours is.
Why are the rockbox people so lazy? No new devices supported and no updates in years
It's the reason why the Clip+ has inflated in value so much despite actually being a really flimsy piece of shit.
>Why are the rockbox people so lazy?
you're full of shit and stupid to boot.
Because there are literally 2 active developers. One is doing an app port and the other is doing 3 native ports.
>Rockbox 3.13 was released on 05 March 2013
okay
my nigga
...
Its not the fault of the rockbox people sandisk is being masssive dicks about what they allow you to install on your device
>checking stable version
Sandisk is actively preventing Rockbox from being installed? I thought it was an issue with whatever SoC they're using now.
>about what they allow you to install on your device
it's not an issue of allowing, but about all the recent PMPs not being proper devices to install rockbox on.
chinkshit 8bit microcontrollers with dedicated decoding-hardware can't run rockbox.
nah you got it all wrong m8
>it's not an issue of allowing, but about all the recent PMPs not being proper devices to install rockbox on.
this. also read the thread, there's been some news-
I hate it, but pmp as an concept is dead. we live in the era of smartphones. this is how you do now:
>cheap smartphone
>128gb micro-sd
>foobar2000 mobile edition
>all your flac transcoded into opus
Currently using this, excellent sound, light, + SD 64Gb and a lot of durability
>touchscreen
no thx
So glad I got one for my mother and one for myself few years ago.
also physical button, no problem ;)
>foobar2000 mobile edition
Thanks user, now the track msove into one another seamlessly without a delay. Smooth, must transcode some flac to opus then and get me some micro sd storage hmmmm
Using this thing.
It has some questionable design decisions but it works.
>That UI on zip
Is that rockboxed or something?
Yeah
fuck wrong thread again
>tfw MP3 players are dead
>tfw the best replacement is a cheap Android phone running the SDL version of Rockbox
Fucking why. I could pay a fortune for one of those old players, but they're all gone now, and what remains is shit.
I got my sansa zip clip like 2 years ago for $30 and I broke it when it accidentally went though the wash. I look through eBay and what the hell $70+ for a used system?
What is a cheap mp3/flac player ?
If you want cheapest there's the Ruizu X02. Cheap, microSD, decent file format support, garbage interface.
>buy sansa sport clip
>it's totally bricked at arrival
piece of shit can't even go on. first and last time buying a sandisk
Don't buy the recent ones, they're garbage.
Sandisk designed a perfect mp3 player, and then stopped selling them.
Anyone considering the agptek a12 should know they will lock up when playing some formats from card. Otherwise they seem fine for the price but I intend on switching over as soon as I see something else I like. ie:
Sony still makes walkmans tho...
From what I've heard they're alright.
Certain android apps have settings to let you ff/rw with the volume buttons. If you had actually looked.
