Why is UTF-8 variable length? What's the benefit?

why does 1060 has twice less cores but performs the same as rx 480

>Why is UTF-8 variable length? What's the benefit?
Only needing a few bits to represent your basic character space means that you're saving space. You also avoid dealing with endianess.

shitload of commands requiring you to do shit like compile a tar ball from source and configure it with a bunch of specific commands that i don't know

Why.

Core count is irrelevant. It's only useful when comparing within the same family of chipsets. People often make that mistake when putting AMD up against their competitors.

why does plugging my monitor into my integrated graphics card (rather than my gpu) only let me output at 1280x1024?

You're not sticking to the user friendly distros/installers. That's your own fault.

can any computer wizard here help me retrieve or at least get a screenshot of this deleted tweet?

twitter.com/Partisangirl/status/853418449757888512

i have tried everything, but not luck. just a screen-shot would be good enough.

thank you in advance!

is there any program that allows you to adjust the speed of play back during playback (affecting both tempo and speed, like with analog equipment)? Ideally it would be something with a dial/slider

Compiling from source is more complicated on windows. Linux is more like an appstore. You install stuff with one click (or one command).

>windows
Open web browser
Navigate to webpage for program
Find downloads page
Pick the version for your system
Download installer
Open installer
Click through menus
Do your best to avoid bundled spyware

>Linux
sudo apt-get install program
Done

Why can't I fucking install Windows 7 on my skylake machine? Tried using the USB patch program from an user last thread and still got the same problem "A Required CD/DVD Drive Device Driver is Missing for Windows 7 Installation". I tried to install on a DVD and it stuck at 0% at "Expending Windows files" during the installation and after a while I got the 0x080070017 error. I don't want to switch to 8.1 or 10, 7 is god tier.

Here's my full pc specs:
i7 6700k
msi z270 gaming m7
1080ti
250gb ssd + 2tb hdd

Any suggestion? I might switch to Ubuntu but it has no gaymes and this machine is wayyy too overkill for gnu/linux anyways

should i have a separate home and root partitions? why / why not?

By using a package manager I won't get the latest software because they are frozen at a specific version.

Best sound drivers for windows 10?

stop asking stupid questions

How do I get out there of construction and get a job in tech? My body is falling apart

?????

iOS video player - what do you recommend? No ads, may be paid.

Does your ssd and hdd show up at the bios?

stop with these questions

windows actually has a package manager.
msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/reference/5.0/packagemanagement/install-package

The main reason for using multiple partitions is so you can set mount options for each partition.
wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/security#Mount_options

Depends on which distro you use. E.g. Arch is very quick to release the new version while Debian takes forever.

A job in technology is just as bad, if not worse, as physical labor.

I use VLC to watch webm on it

Yep

Where can I find a good deal for a Nexus (either 5X or 6P I don't really care). Too poor to blow 250 europoor money.

Are you trying to install windows 7 from an usb drive?

Yes, it didn't work, even with a USB patch program. What should I do, man?

windows 7 can't into USB3, either put the USB drivers (chipset if it's onboard) onto it and select them at that screen or use a USB2 port if you still have one.

Didn't work on CD/DVD also

Yeah, now all they need is for it to support more than 1% of the software I use.

>ceo wearing a hard hat

Pretentious fucking media whoring prick i work 90 hours a week in your shit tier factory and you have the nerve to act like you spend more than an hour a week here? This deserves strike you cheap bastard fuck off

WSL is a thing

A) He just said he patched it already
B) If it's skylake or kaby it doesn't matter what port you use

What the fuck is this shit.
I get a latest windows 10 update, some creative update thing. After the install I have a new process requesting internet constantly.

>UNP CampaignManager
What is this? Google gives me nothing.

Go download the tool that creates windows 10 media and installl windows 10

Or figure out how to make grub boot the windows installer and prey

Or create a vm use a physical disk dont advance past the initial copy step and boot to it on metal

I have two USB2 ports and it didn't work either.

>A job in technology is just as bad, if not worse, as physical labor.

How so?

You're suggesting I exclusively install software written for another operating system to compensate for microsofts shitty updating system?

You didn't google hard enough.

Sitting for hours looking at a screen in a mostly static position isn't going to do your body much good...

Should I upgrade to Windows 10 from 7?

Do this, unplug your SSD, HDD or whatever the fuck to a another computer and install your Windows 7 on it. When you done, plug it back to your skylake machine

But we can't stop, and we wont stop

Nah. Not until you have a reason you need to.

That is an enormous waste of time.

Explain?

I'd run through your bios settings. Make sure AHCI is on, raid is off. Secureboot/UEFI to legacy. USB might also have a legacy setting.

Double check you patched your windows disk with the USB drivers. Also how did you make your USB?

He should be working on figuring out what the issue is, not wasting time doing some install that might not even transfer correctly.

>1.5x the clockspeed
>better drivers
>more transistors per core

Everything in BIOS are exactly like that.

I'm using Windows 7 USB Patcher to patch the files then using Rufus to make my USB bootable. That's all.

You verified the ISO checksum?

Yes.....

Well fuck it man, sorry for wasting your time. I'm installing Debian. Thank a lot you for the help

Thanks, man. I've uploaded low res .avis and HD720 .mkvs. Although it's not that Apple's kind of "it just works" and it kinda lags - it just works on my iP SE, I appreciate it.

what extension do you all use to curb internet addiction ? i.e. to block websites
do you just add them to host file ?

also i am on windows. editing a host file does not seem a viable deterrent.

just install windows 8.1, what you're doing isn't worth the hassle

where can i get legit win8.1 iso [clean]?
is there any website like that digitalriver mirror ?

>msi z270 gaming m7
MSI has their own application for patching Windows 7 installation media, have you tried that?

what i usually do is look for the checksum in the mydigitallife forums, they have a post for that. after that, i use it as a search on google and usually get 2 or 3 links to the iso file. after downloading i run sha1sum on the file and if they're identical i'm golden

pastebin.com/smjvLZN4

If you don't have another PC, torrent is usually fastest.

Why the hell wouldn't you go to MSDN for the checksum?

>Why the hell wouldn't you go to MSDN for the checksum?
because I didn't know that was an option

Guys how hard would it be to build something that

1.scrapes information off ebay like buyer email address + quantity

2a.Creates login details from the browser Webmin of a server by entering 3 different strings and selecting 1 option from a drop down menu
2b. Downloads a string and a zip file.

3. Create an email from a template, enter in scraped Ebay email address + downloaded string + attach zip file.

4. Once email sent, send email, leave feedback and mark as dispatched in ebay.

I know basic bitch programming but not done it in years so don't really know where to start. How hard and length a project would this though and if I were to do it what languages and programs would I need to be up to speed with?

The only program I am any good with is excel...

Can I adjust the volume for individual audio channels in VLC/MPC or whatever?
For example I download some motorsport with a separate commentary track and I want to lower the volume of the commentary only. I can do this by importing to Audacity, but then it's obviously a bit of a mess to keep in sync with the video

>systemctl mask lightdm
>Created symlink /etc/system/system/lightdm.service -> /dev/null
>systemctl enable xdm
>Failed to enable unit, file /etc/system/system/display-manager.service already exists and is a symlink to /usr/lib/system/system/lightdm.service
>rm /usr/lib/system/system/lightdm.service
>rm: cannot remove '/usr/lib/system/system/lightdm.service
': No such file or directory

ARGHHHH WHAT THE FUCK
lightdm isn't even installed any more. it wouldn't start on boot, so I installed xdm. which I can't enable.

nvm, that problem has been solved. idk if it will work on bootup though

Does virus scans degrade SSDs like defragmentation?

I am trying to play a visual novel which worked fine a couple of months ago, but every time I try to launch it now I get this message. Any ideas?

No. Virus scans don't even write or move anything. Defragmentation isn't so much harmful as it is pointless. Physical location is meaningless to an SSD. What the OS sees is just an abstraction created by the controller.

reinstall ?

I bought a vintage amplifier recently, (JVC AS3) it works when I plug it into my phone using RCA -> 3.5mm.
But only one speaker works when plugged inot my laptop.

Tried. I've also tried updating/rollbacking my drivers.

dd wrt vs open wrt?

The actual problem in an error message is always appended on the end

>No such file or directory
>script/0.txt

In the script folder in the program folder 0.txt doesn't exist. You need to add it or change some kind of setting

VLC?

What is a good video codec to encode to nowadays? got a bunch of family videos that I'm planning to reduce somewhat in size without sacrificing too much in overall quality.

for storage? HEVC/VP9
otherwise it depends on what devices you want to play them on.

device playback is not a big concern, this is going straight to archive.

is handbrake still ok? or is there a better alternative nowadays?

ffmpeg is the best tool for video encoding.

Is it possible to run a game in one screen (full screen; not windowed) and a web browser or an IRC client in the other be able to use a mouse on both

no

lol

you asked this yesterday already, the answer is still no. not in exclusive mode, only in borderless windowed mode.

thanks
but must have been a different guy yesterday

Doesn't work on another laptop

care to elaborate?

hmm, I didn't think of that. I need to be able to make very fine adjustments; I'm working digitized tape recordings and I'm trying to correct them by comparing them by ear to another recording simultaneously. I'm not sure if VLC has that kind of precision. thank you though I will check it.

Audacity has a temporary slider in its transcription menu. And there is a tempo changer and a speed changer.

Command line is unintuitive, it gives you no indication as to what options are available, and will have you beating your head against the wall.
ffmpeg also has a shitty AAC encoder.

it might be a bit harder to get a grasp first, but once you know them I feel like I'm much more in control than some clicky UI.
Especially that some don't even give me all the options.
Just yesterday I had to render a video from after effects and it didn't have a CRF option for h264, so I had to export it lossless and run it through ffmpeg afterwards.

Personally I'd rather look up what I can do than having to sift through pages of checkboxes and radiobuttons.

Eh, I just checked it, it sucks. There's no slider or anything. Sorry to have wasted your time.

How do I replace Windows 10 Home with Windows 10 Pro without messing with android or whatever in the Chuwi Hi10? Also, does Linux (((just werk))) on the Chuwi Hi10?

rfkill says my wifi is hard-blocked, but it's not. windows can access the wifi no bother. It's weird because earlier on, literally like an hour ago, the wifi worked perfectly fine. I haven't messed with it or anything, so I'm pretty confused. how to fix??

I just did a fresh windows 10 pro re-install. But it doesn't have a Ethernet controller driver. Help

Posting from my laptop btw

did you install your chipset drivers?

my mouse scroll wheel has stopped working (its an apex 700) was wondering if anyone knows how to fix it

Yes

Looking to organise my image folder but realised that .png and .gif files don't have metadata for tags. Does anyone have any recommendations for an alternative way to organise images, preferably one that includes a tagging system?

Try downloading the driver for your ethernet controller separately?
