I've got a Thinkpad T530 with no screen, no OS.
I've got a Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D cable, a VGA cable, an RJ45 cable, power adapter for the T530, and a non-EFI PXE server setup.
There is a password set for the BIOS, and I know the password.

I can't traverse bootup blind to get it to network boot. pls, anyone w/ a Thinkpad T530 willing to guide this blind user?

is a 2008 t60 worth anything, it's fully functional

T430 Master fucking race.

Add in a $50 SSD, $12 3rd party adapter, and $30 3rd party 94Wh battery.

$200 each (after upgrades) for a laptop that benchmarks within 10% of current gen ULVs and can be tossed off ladders.

oops wrong image

Okay guys i just got a thinkpad and i put a ssd in it and tried to install windows it booted up to the home screen but it won't let me connect to the internet nothing even shows up to connect to
help please

Depending on the screen it's got they can be worth quite a bit. 1600x1200 IPS is rare as fuck, most listings I've seen for it on ebay want $300 or more if they know they have it. 1400x1050 IPS is also uncommon and I've seen those go for $150-$250. If it's a 14" or widescreen model, it won't be IPS, and won't be nearly as sought-after or valuable. 1400x1050 14" can still go for a decent price around $100. Anything 1024x768 is

ok, thanks

Damn, I got fucking ripped off for my T430.

reposting this from the last thread

just installed 10 LTSB on my T420, when I was loading it up with 7zip the fan wasn't running
I've got all the drivers I can find installed, not sure if I'm missing something

Don't worry, I paid $200 for my first T430 and still had to buy an SSD and new battery. What'd you pay for yours?

Here I'm paying ~$200 total (for each, so $400 for two) for a brand new SSD, Battery, and Power Adapter.

I might flip one for a few bucks, but maybe not since Jewnovo is taking weeks (going on 4 now) to fix my P50s. Gonna be nice to have a well performing beater (or two!) in the meantime.

Does Lenovo's control suite stuff work on Win 10 with something like an xx20?

well I found the correct download for power manager and the fan runs now
some does and some doesn't, drivers are the harder part, but I was able to get everything including WWAN working fine

I just finished installing basic stuff on my x230 (got it for ~$120) any recomendation on some software that will help me keep it in decent condition/battery life ? And is msata SSD worth it (~$25 for 80GB intel one) ?

msata is only useful if you don't need WWAN and need 2 SSD's
if not just stick with a regular one

Crap :/ So I have to buy bigger ssd now :c
Aren't there 2 slots for mpcie ?

there's 1 that does mPCIe and 1 that is a mPCIe slot physically, but electrically is only mSATA (for SSD) or USB (for WWAN)

oh thx for the info

please help

install drivers you ding dong

You're a perfect candidate for suicide. Consider it.

There's no ethernet port on windows.
You have to install Wallsocket 8.

Is the T420 a meme

yes

it's a good meme though

Hey Thinkfriends, I see some of y'all posting pictures of T420s with QM (quad core) CPUs. Is installing a quad core cpu in a T420 as simple as just doing it, or are there heat and fan issues to take into account?

I'm in the market for a quad core Thinkpad, and right now W520s seem to be my best bet for getting the jist of what I want without having to spend too much in post-purchase-upgrades.

>I'm in the market for a quad core Thinkpad, and right now W520s seem to be my best bet

Sorry, should add:
>quad core Thinkpad with the classic keyboard

What faggy stickers are you guys rocking?

Heat can be a problem even without a QM, if you want to take full advantage of a powerful CPU, a 15" will be worth it.

So are you a child in middle school or the guy who lurks at middle schools?

>shitty keyboard
>greasy laptop
>stickers
>gaymr controller

didn't know they were cheap. might get one for linux learning. having 3 drives is so comfy

I've only got the one but i like it

yes: github.com/Bizzaro/x230-osx

this will keep it in better condition than brand new. born-again computing.

I'm gonna be getting a few for that post ironic haxxor nostalgia feel but I am definitely cutting away those shitty white edges.

where can you get an 80gb msata ssd for $25?

whats an x60 worth? found one in basically perfect condition, the seller wants 100 AUD, what should I offer?

>take screen bezel off
>put blutac over holes for webcam
>tape up the retardedly bright battery and sleep lights

Much better.

what are some good smaller size thinkpads? like under 13"

Lenovo ThinkPad T500 2056 - 15.4" - Core 2 Duo T9400 - Windows 7 Home - 4 GB RAM - 160 GB with charger and dock for 70€
Y/N?

Someone here tell me why I shouldn't get a T470 with a FHD ips display, 8 gigs of ram, i5 7200u, 128 gb SSD +500 gb HDD and an oem 72w/hr battery if it only costs me 700 USD

A 6/10 yes, imo the dock is what makes it worth it

X220 or X270. Unless you wanna go further back than that those are the only solid options

For any online negotiations, half the asking price for your first offer, and then settle between your first offer and half way between their asking price and your first offer.

I.E. he wants 100, you say 50, your price range is between 50 and 75

Alright, I'll be contacting the seller. I hope it does not have any dGPU on it.

Also see what I said here, doesn't hurt to try to save a few bucks

hmm, i offered 75, no reply yet.. Ill keep your tips in mind though, im not used to haggling..

It's just a matter of realizing they want/need to sell it, and if they didn't it wouldn't be listed. You've got the power in the situation and some top tier hewing can be done if you know how to bargain with people

>It's just a matter of realizing they want/need to sell it, and if they didn't it wouldn't be listed.
i'd never thought of it like that.
> You've got the power in the situation
So that makes a lot of sense

...

No precision touchpad

>using a touchpad at all
>not using trackpoint exclusively
>not writing a bash script to disable your touchpad on login

SHIGGY

Is the x230 with x220 keyboard mod the last great thinkpad? Are any of you interested in the retro thinkpad that might get released later this year?

Pretty sure you can just download precision drivers too

scrolling is shit with the trackpoint.

Checked

>T430 Master fucking race.

bought myself a new clit mous. worth it if you were considering it. i use it exclusively, i've gotten pretty good with his ass

seller says no offers, 100aud/75usd for an x60?

Yeah, its not a bad deal with the dock, just make sure you have use for it/really want it

>chiclet keyboard
you can mod a x20 series keyboard on very easily. It's also possible to overcome the network card thing but I admit it's very involved.

Anens I just bought the L412 with i5 M520 ( for 60 buckaroos shipping included). Is it any good ?

Got my X1 Carbon 2015 today, but the screen looks so grainy. Is there any fix to this?

Can I discuss other laptops here? I'm in dire need of suggestions concerning getting a new one, probably used.
Russia
700 usd and below
Around 15-17 inches would be perfect
I just want to be able to run modern vidya at at least 30 damn fps.

Try a hammer
T470 got delayed, again, I'm stuck computerless for an indeterminate amount of time.

Should i buy a T460?

Looking at a:

Thinkpad X201 (3626)
CPU: i5-540M
RAM: 4 GB
HDD: 160 GB
1280x800

Planning on swapping out the HDD for an SSD.

How does $190 sounds for such a laptop, it is allegedly a store front model, with a new battery and 6 months warranty.

Think pad buyers guide suggests $150, so not how good the deal is.

what country? that's a lot of money for a x201

IBM x61 laptop⁄ 2gb ram / 60gb hdd⁄intel core duo L7500

113usd, only x6x I can find in my country so far

>got T520
>swapped display out for B156HW01
>flashed coreboot, swapped CPU out for Ivy Bridge one
>replaced heatsink with NVS version
>replaced RAM with 2 × 8 1866mhz
>added msata ssd
>going to order an expresscard so I can have usb3.0 ports
>might get a drive caddy for the ultrabay eventually so I can have 2 HDDs

Is there anything left to upgrade/change on this thing? I'm pretty sure it's absolutely maxed out at this point.

Is Asus G74SX worth it if I can get one for 600$?

Was upgrading my librebooted T500 with a 2GB Turbo Memory Card I got off eBay. Checked to see if it was any good.

Finished pass 1 successfully

This means it's pretty much defective and I should just return it, right? I couldn't even properly use ubiattach with it.

going to upgrade my t420 with an i7 2630qm.
how will that affect battery life from lived experience?

It will enter the Marianas trench.

first make sure you disable turbo boost and hyperthreading

yep sure thing after my cum-thermal-paste mix im ready.

tinkfan -mode "unengaged"

Croatia, Europe usually has a bit higher prices as far as I saw....

>buy T500 on ebay
>check photos to obseve condition
>photo of keyboard depicts a T400

If this happens am I fucked if I receive a T400?

Just got my X220 from the mail, it works perfectly and I'm loving it. Very glad I took your advice on this. My config is a basic i5, 8gb DDR3 ram. The screen is still TN crap and it's bugging me out to no end, so I'm ordering an IPS panel right away. What else is a good upgrade or measure to get the most out of my new machine?

Throw an mSata drive on it

I might be able to help you when I get home. I have a T430

>Ivy bridge is house fire
>Being so new that he doesn't know mobile cpus don't have heat spreaders
You have to go back

Hell, /tpg/!

I have a T510 that I purchased used about a year ago. Last night it kept shutting down and now it won't turn on at all because it apparently isn't getting any power from the battery. Not sure if it's the battery charger, the thinkpad battery or the cord or what the problem is. Any tips on troubleshooting to determine where the source of the problem lays? Or anyone else have a similar experience to this and how did you resolve it? Thanks.

You can just drop any second gen cpu on the T420 though if you want to use a QM cpu you're going to have to pick up the heatsink from the Nvidia version of the T420 unless you're in the mood for some house fires

X220 or X230

>Asymmetric keyboard
>>trash

It is if you don't use the middle button

If you want TB3, no, if you don't, yes

Solved this, it was the cord.

i love using the middle button on my x121e as an actual middle button. opening links in new tabs and closing tabs is so convenient with it. 2 finger scrolling and or using the pg up down keys is a bit annoying, but I'm okay with paying that price.

what about the n or e series?

if you can't find the win10 driver, just install the win8 one.

I've just got a T420 from ebay for a decent price. The only bad part is some minor scratches to the top and the keys have been used to the point of a shiny finish (cheap abs?)

Does /tpg/ have a go to guide on the best way to deal with the key issue or should I just get a new set of keys?

I think I broke my X220 keyboard.
I push the power button on it and it does not turn on. The battery icon, however does blink when I plug in the charger.

i was thinking about installing fedora workstation in my x220 (i5, 8gb ram, ssd+hdd) - how is it running compared to windows 10? i'm also concerned about the battery runtime (9cell, about 8,5h+ with win10). does it worth the switch?

Why is the T420 the Sup Forums approved laptop?

because it's easy to repair and plenty of spare parts?

Don't forget cheap as ass.

same goes for the x220.

bought a "T420p" on ebay the other day for $150.

item description was obviously a T420, but the pictures were very plainly of a T540p, so holy shit this could be happening.

I can't wait to get home and see what I got. worst case I have another T420 for only a bit more than a fully functioning one is worth. Best case I got a 540p for waaay under it's value.

In to the trash they go
Only the T, X, W and P series are proper thinkpads. The E and N series are equivalent specced models with worse build quality

I love using it as both a middle click and scroll button on my T430. Though this is only on Linux so I have even less reason to use Windows
