This. Vim is on almost every server you'll ever log into so its handy at least knowing that.

Having needed to use emacs for a semester, I found it awkward to use most of it's key bindings.

Probably will never use it again.

You know, I don't think most people that use emacs a lot use the default keybindings.

>Vim is on almost every server you'll ever log into so its handy at least knowing that.
No.
Vi is, but not vim. Atleast that was my impression.
But it is handy to know a few vi commands

I mean, I guess emacs has evil-mode.

depends what you like better

Vi on modern servers is usually just an alias for vim.

There's nano too

Nobody uses nano.

If you are really opposed to learning those few vim keybinds, you could use that instead. But yeah, if you are spending significant amount of time outside of programming, vim is preferable. Otherwise, it's a matter of personal preference

There's micro too

Spacemacs you dumb fuck.

I never got the appeal of emacs. I just use vim.

emacs hotkeys are faster than vim modes for manipulating a single line. i use vim, but it is worth learning basic emacs hotkeys for readline prompts (e.g., bash). being able to manipulate words quickly is very helpful when composing shell commands, and readline's vim mode is psychotic

similarly, i use vim modes for controlling my browser but emacs hotkeys for text input

I use GNU EMacs a lot, and I use the default bindings.

Vim, but the real question is, should I switch?

switch to emacs yes you should

ed is the standard text editor

>Debian-derived distros
Fixed, there are a lot of modern servers that don't have Vim installed.

>I never got the appeal of emacs.
The appeal of Emacs is automating everything.

Emacs is to Vim what shell scripting is to typing out every single command in a Bash command line.

Lots of non-programmer arch Linux ricers do

There's ed too.

I'm using nano until I can understand emacs

Salut

Euh, salut.

Ugh those brackets and nextlines

proprietary

IDEs are better :^)

"Programs are not text; they are hierarchical compositions of computational structures and should be edited, executed, and debugged in an environment that consistently acknowledges and reinforces this viewpoint."

I call fake. What is this really?

so what like bluej?

come at me freetards

I use it.

It's not a fake. It's ed wrapped in ledit (a better rlwrap).

>text != hierarchical compositions of computational structures
What is Turing completeness motherfucker
