I've never heard of someone's data being looked at. Most I've had done is a chemical sniff of the laptop to make sure it's not a bomb or some shit, and they'll try to turn it on just for a second to verify it's a real laptop, then give it back.

copy your whole drive to a .img file and keep it on a fileserver you control.
zero your drive with dd before you leave.
Download your .img with a livedisk when you arrive.
Write it back onto your laptop's drive with dd or another block-copy writer

make another account on your PC and set up EFS with that account. Make a zip file and encrypt it with efs on windows. Hide it and stick it somewhere in appdata\local\microsoft or something stupid like that.

I work for a defense firm. They give us this advice when traveling:
- Never cross international borders with any data on your electronics.
- Wipe your laptop beforehand.
- Only travel with a burner phone.
- If you're traveling for work, get a written notice from a company attorney saying that the device contains sensitive trade secrets making it illegal for them to search it (in the US at least).
- Encrypt everything.
