It is the AIM of current times.

Discord is for faggots

Matrix is the IRC of current times.
Discord is babbies first WebRTC client targeted at Sup Forums, since they will gobble up literally anything, no matter how shitty it is.

>since they will gobble up literally anything, no matter how shitty it is

AMD products, for example

it seems to be okay.
I am not really into it, but it just works.

People love it because its easy to spam memes conveniently but other than that its feature bare and they datamine everything you do.

discord is far more innovative than IRC ever was

IRC contributed literally nothing to technology as a whole, discord literally saved gaming and the internet as a whole

Please no

>discord literally saved gaming

>being a manchild

discord isn't innovative at all, my man.

this

I'd rather use Mumble for VOIP. Free and light software, without all the jew bullshit. Discord is a ghetto for retards though, god bless Discord

t. Retarded hipster

There's no way for me to avoid it because friends refuse to use alternatives. I'd use Mumble, but no one cares enough about my opinion to bother trying it. So Discord it is.

IRC is great and all, but it needs to be updated for the modern world. Shit like uploading pictures, embedding links, etc. is really useful.

host a matrix homeserver, my man.
Riot is plenty normie friendly.
If they don't bite yet, write a cool bot, that wowed my normie friends.

IRC doesn't need to be updated for the modern world, I already lost #news and I'm NOT losing #nibl goddamnit

One of the groups I'm in had an IRC server running for 10 years. Back in 2006 it was expected that a gamer could figure out how to set up an IRC client and understood concepts like ip and ssl. Now these fucking smartphone generations can't do it in 2017 and forced a move to Discord.

>Shit like uploading pictures, embedding links, etc. is really useful.
That stuff belongs in the client. There are several that preview pictures like discord does, I'm sure some will upload to your preferred imagehost too. Don't know what embedding links does.

I don't know why software like discord is so popular. You cannot host your own servers, and you cannot be free of the whims of whoever owns discord. Unlike IRC where you can host your own servers, and you have a choice between different servers, different hosts, and different clients.

it's because Sup Forums doesn't care about freedom.
they _want_ to be enslaved.

...

fuk u
amd best

I've had my own Mumble server for several years and I'm not about to change now, but I think Discord is easily a better option at this point.

+ free
+ easy invite (just click a link)
+ individual tabs for PMs
+ embedded images
+ persistent feed
+ change individual user volumes

The list probably goes on, but I haven't used Discord enough to really know everything it can do. The only reason to use Mumble is that the client is lightweight.

IRC is the IRC of current times

newfaggeto

>there are niggers dumb enough to use discord

> I don't know why software like discord is so popular.

It just werks and there's no need for nerd shit cli crap.
I like it because it keeps casuals and normalfags away from IRC.

I use Discord for D&D
My friends use Discord for D&D
None of us are attached, but we use it because it's easy.
What should I switch to?

raw telnet piped into a file, monitored with tail.

combine that with lame for voice chat.

Discord has absolutely abysmal privacy though, which is the main reason I refuse to use it.

Discord isn't even free software, the fuck are you talking about OP?

Mumble

Good job on baiting this guys

>is software the protocol of our time?
no

Only one of my players would make sense of that.
Kys
But I'm stingy.

Would you prefer flac?

This.

So does Facebook. Literally shows you ads based on your chat history.

this

Matrix/Riot

is there a reason to chosen mumble over teamspeak?
i am hosted a teamspeak server for 10 years almost now
probably will not changed it since im used it for so long now

Not really anymore, mumble was far superior back when TS2 was a thing but nowadays TS3 catched up pretty well and the mumble project stagnated

I use it for large group projects and it works fairly well.

Is there really any other alternative? I don't care about voice chat. Only need group chat with different subsections and 'roles'.

IRC, you bellend.

IRC and Matrix/Riot

How the fuck does Discord make money. They must track and sell the fuck out of their user data. Didn't someone find out it was partially financed by Saudi Arabia or some shit? Yeah no thx

>AIM
Who?

No.

"Saved gaming" lol

quakenet.org/privacy

>IRC

TOPKEK

In terms of using it for chatting, I honestly don't see a reason for it. If I'm interested in using it to talk with people who have interested in playing games with me, why wouldn't I use steam instead?
There's also no reason for me to use it as a VOIP, because the settings are so fucking barebones [ WHERES THE FUCKING FEEDBACK/LISTEN TO YOUR MICROPHONE TROUGH THE SOFTWARE BUTTON ] and lack shit that even Skype had, not to mention the shitbrow tier quality of it despite using a great codec.

So in the end I have the choice of either combining steam and 2006's mumble together (despite having to steam in the background still) to suffer from javascript error popups and 1GB of wasted ram, or I could just stick to shit that has worked for eons?

The only reason we use it for is text chat and containing idiots that think installing mumble is too complicated. Makes for a good screening process.

Mumble is easy to host, configure, and as a bonus secure for the most part.

IRC is also ;
Free
Easy to invite (irc urls)
Embedded images (run a client that does it)
Persistent feed (join a server that supports it +chanhistory)

Discord is for gamers first and foremost, and most of their features are gaming oriented, if you're not gaming you should use something like Slack, Rocket Chat, Mattermost, etc.

right, but it's not a VoIP so this is apples to oranges

>It just werks and there's no need for nerd shit cli crap.
yeah because you can't use gui programs like hexchat or other beyond retarded easy programs to just connect and enter a channel.
discord client is a piece of shit for this new wave of useles kids that watch youtube channels and spend hours watching people play games on twitch.

Good lord you're bitter. Not everyone has the same priorities about technology that you have, and discord works for them. It's fine.

IRC
>protocol that anyone can utilize

Discord
>proprietary software
>can't utilize in any way not allowed by the company
>propped up by millions in VC
>will inevitably turn to shit when investors want their ROI and they scramble to suck every penny out of its users

Don't forget...

Discord doesn't allow you to delete accounts or report illegal shit like CP servers & pedo users.

Wtf I love discord now

You can join any random channel and start chatting and making friends like the old IRC times tho

>no matter how shitty it is.
Discord is a top quality voice and text chat, nothing tops it. The only actual downside is no decentralization.

Why the fuck is this suddenly so popular? Who runs their marketing campaign ?
I keep hearing about this piece of software that does something that's been around since gamespy.
Don't people realise all these new communication apps are just data acquisition for the 3 letter agencies?

>just data acquisition for the 3 letter agencies
yeah but this one's different; it's backed by the chinese :)

Because you can share a link with a person and he can join the voice chat without installing anything. It just works and takes no amount of time to setup. Voice quality is good and text messaging facilities include everything people want. Don't know any other software that does this, apart from possibly riot.im (which I never used).

>data acquisition for the 3 letter agencies
fuck they'll know I'm ganking mid
ruined
discord ruined

Discord is the IRC of fucking idiots. Unfortunately, my friends are fucking idiots.

Maybe for newer ones. I'm loving it but it's really a data miner a la Facebook. They said "we are sponsored".... for sure ;))

idk why you're sucking irc cock
it wasn't that great even at it's peak

Would you like to explain how it being data miner is a downside when it's used for its direct purpose, ie voice communication in videogames?

>when it's used for its direct purpose
It's not used for anything except selling your information.
It's "direct purpose" is profiteering your private data.
If a chat system isn't decentralized in 2017 you know they are pulling some (((fishy))) stuff.

Forget that, he said it saved the internet.

>It's not used for anything except selling your information.
I see you haven't used discord and have only been consuming discord related memes. Discord is used as a tool for voice communication by most people who are using it.

Sure, but it's much better than Discord, even today.

>new communication apps are just data acquisition for the 3 letter agencies
>new
>meanwhile IRC is plaintext

how?

Significantly more lightweight, FOSS, ability to run and totally control your own servers, More lines of text on the screen at a time, easier to write bots for, significantly more client choice, I could keep going if you'd like.

>Why do people like this?
>How do they make money.
It was shilled by game companies all over. They had $30m in investments before the program was released.

The main thing that got everyone into it was being instantly accessible from browser. You could go to someone "hey let's play with my other friends" and in two seconds be in the same chat. It all went uphill, or downhill, from there. It has an idiot-proof interface and has most of the features that normalfags who play League of Legends all day want. Let's look at the alternatives.

>Teamspeak: have to pay/host a server, looks like antiquated ass that normalfags won't touch
>Mumble: looks like ass and normalfags won't touch
>Skype: everyone who used this for gaming wanted to jump ship to something that worked ASAP
>anything else like tox or: not a big enough userbase, because normalfags like being part of 100 servers and shitposting with anime porn all day, also probably looks like shit that they don't wanna touch

Normal people don't care about FOSS. I bet you that there's even idiots who think that because Discord is free as in beer that it is "secure." Now that Discord solidified their base they are going to impose safe-space shit all over. They require you to put NSFW tags on rooms that allow you to share porn. Their TOS now bans loli/shota, and it's not just a thing to cover their ass from countries that ban it, one of the devs made some ideologically charged comments about it on twitter. Of course since they can see anything you type having a server with just you and your degenerate loli-loving contemporaries can still be met with a ban.

Not to mention their Linux client has some serious vulnerabilities but I cannot cite this because I just flat out stopped using it and caring about it when I heard.

>propietary software
>even once
>help me

I'm not talking about what the users use it for and neither was the guy you responded to in the first place.
Free shit is never free, there is always a cost. Discord costs you your privacy to use.

More lines seen is kind of irrelevant since you only need to read few last ones. The stuff Discord puts that takes space, like horizontal dividers and previews for web pages are actually useful.

The rest does not apply to users. Inability to run and totally control your own servers is a honest downside of Discord, the rest is not. Client choice would matter if Discord client was bad.

Here's stuff IRC lacks: server-side text and metadata search, voice communication, rich media in text messages.

So, yes, do go on.

i just wanna use riot

Yeah. Well done admitting it. Now could you answer my original question then?

>Would you like to explain how it being data miner is a downside when it's used for its direct purpose, ie voice communication in videogames?

why would a party of 5 people install an irc client each and go through the hassle of configuration a connection to your server to end up in a text chat?

when they can just open a link in incognito and just alt-tab back to the game and go on with their lives...

you're basically recommencing a teletype in a cellphone era

discord is convenient unlike mumble, ts and all the other shit out there.

>More lines seen is kind of irrelevant since you only need to read few last ones.
Eh, not to me. it's the first thing I missed when I installed Discord.

The rest obviously applies to users. I am a user, it all applies to me.

I don't think you're going to be reasonable, so enjoy Discord, I'll continue cursing my friends for using nothing else.

>hassle
>typing in a few words is a hassle
How do you manage to use this board? Isn't trying your responses a hassle?

the default matrix.org server is so fucking slow
has anyone tried hosting one themselves?

if irc is so great why we're not using it right now?

Irc doesn't have memes on the loading screen.

I am, but I also have to use Discord because the vast majority of my meatspace friends refuse to use anything else.

If we make a piechart of people who are potential or actual users of Discord, and split it into two parts, one being people who don't consider discord becoming FOSS a useful feature for them, and the other people who do, the latter would be so small you wouldn't be able to see it.

Just because you want it does not give you enough claim to say it applies to users.

To illustrate it in more colorful way, if a person jacks off to a picture of mirc every morning, lack of that picture is not a valid criticism for Discord, even though there exists a user who really likes that picture.

>why is having my private communications being sold to whoever a bad thing
If you do not see why that is a downside I don't know how you found your way to this board but you sure as hell don't belong here.
There are so many things they can do with the data discord collects.

Well, under the same token, just because you claim the feature is not a feature does not make it so. I do not believe we are going to see eye to eye on this issue.

>hassle
you conveniently missed "the hassle of configuration"
go on walk a newbie through adding your custom server to irc
vs
open this link and use guest account

but I'm not
and the purpose of a communication tool is communicating, so have fun sitting on a dead channel

no

I never said Discord wasn't easier to use, but IRC isn't rocket science, either.

user... I wouldn't be using IRC if I had nobody to talk to on it.

>IRC is plaintext

I'm not trying to convince you. You're free to dislike Discord. I'm fine with just showing that your arguments are unreasonable.

I do not agree, but such is life.

I'm on Sup Forums since 2006. I found my way here through some anime scan site.

It is so difficult for you to list what dreadful things they can do from monitoring my video gamer voice chats? Please.

Well, obviously, I'm not trying to show it to you.

Do you know any nice chat rooms?
