New computer

>new computer
>bought 'only' 8 gigs ram
>even the most intensive tasks only use 7GB

i'm glad I didn't fall for the 16GiB of RAM meme *whew*

>being this retarded

It really depends, 8 gigs is fine tgo get by on at the moment, but it can in some cases be a bottle neck.

The most likely time you'd run into this is having a new game open, plus having your browser open, along with some standard background programs running can pretty easily max out 8 gigs of ram.

16 gigs isn't super expensive either, and will be useful for a looooong time.

>bottle neck.
kys yourself gaming virgin who uses words they dont know the meaning of

>frogposters

k

mfw on 6 gigs since 2009 never once had a problem

>7GB
your swap space says Hi

I keep trying to tell my mother this. She's convinced that she needs 16gb of RAM and an i5 when the most intensive thing she does is open a PDF while checking her email.

>16 gigs isn't super expensive either
RAM has been steadily overpriced and increasing in price for half a decade or so now.
>you'll never get 16gb for $30 of top quality RAM ever again
not even HDD prices have fully fucking recovered still.
pipe dream in wishing even slow sata 3 ssds will be at a price that isn't fucking retardedly high

>mfw I paid less last July for 16GB than OP did for his 8GB

>loaded the fuck up on 32GB at $35/8GB DIMM because I have the wealth to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves
>running VMs and a billion browser tabs alongside games with no fucks given
>mfw

mfw fall for the 24gb meme

>8 chromium tabs
>f2k
>steam
>adobe reader
>3.7/8
phew i almost fell for the 16GB RAM meme

>2017
>8gb

>memory pressure

...

16 GB is only worth it when you use your computer for something useful for society. 8 GB is perfectly fine for posting memes and watching trap porn, as OP has already verified.

>never heard of VM
> assumes nobody else ever has either

Take it to Sup Forums or Sup Forums (you) flaming fuckwit.

>Missing out on all that cache to preload your daily programs
RAMlets, when will they learn?

>tfw you could've bought 8GB kits for half the price just a couple of months ago

feels like Bitcoin at 2008 before it went big

>still rocking 4GB
>most intensive tasks use ~2GB
It's called usecase, fool.
Mine asks for 4GB of RAM, yours for 8GB.

Memes like 16GB are supposed to catch most common usecases.
Doesn't mean it's perfect, just that it's most likely to be the sweet spot where you won't use more but still benefit from not having less.

>trying to ignore the facts
stop lying to yourself and stop being too poor for 8gb of ram

>tfw fell for the 16 GiB RAM meme

>tfw fell for the 3.5 GB ram meme

>tfw still using 4gig
How's it feels like using 8 and 16 gig?

>not performing real time rendering of the simulated movement of subatomic particles as they approach the even horizon of a Reissner-Nordström black hole
Should've bought more ram desu

Weird, if I use mysql, eclipse, chrome, Java, Word, pidgin and steam. I am hovering 7gb, kinda wish I had 16gb

I've already seen this with 8 gigs. Should get another pair of DDR3 before the prices jump up or something. Populating all 4 slots won't affect performance or anything will it? It's an H97 board.

What's the point on RAM when you can just cache all programs in your CPU's cache?

You do have enough CPU cache right? You're not some poorfag

you got a brand new computer and you're already near the max capacity. good job OP.

...

>sugerowanie że kiedykolwiek to wykorzystasz

All those unnecessary cores, too. You only need like 4 TOPS.

Maybe I should make a thread every time I decide not to buy something.

>HE BOUGHT 8 FUCKING GIGS OF RAM
>He didnt use his old 256mb ram + additional 32GB swap space on his HDD
LMAOOOOOO

Your days are numbered, RAMlet.

For the work i do, I think i might need 32

>open a PDF

Does she use Adobe? I have a 7700k and a 1080ti with 32gb of ram, and adobe reader still brings my system to its knees.

>only have 8 gigs of ram
>computer somehow never uses more than 8 gigs
Wow, 16 GB cucks BTFO

is this picture still accurate? I thought modern games require atleast 16GB of ram now

Install 16GB and see that the same tasks will utilize more than 7GB. Why are people like this even allowed on neo/g/?

16 GB reccomended. 8 GB minimum.

>RAMlets will never have so much RAM that Windows stretches it's legs out and uses as much of it as possible

>RAMlets will never get to experience the speed of a PC with atleast 512GB of RAM

>mfw 4GB and no problems ever

> didnt fall for 32gb meme
> 16gb is constantly full

>2017
>having a swap partition

ram is expensive as fuck these days. even with 16gb ram you should have one just in case.

Just in case? What a retarded reason.

>Sup Forums
>most extreme case assumed to be video games

> Not having 1125 tabs open

I have a t460 with 8gb, should I buy another 8gb stick for 60-70 bucks? It's not that I can't afford to lose the money but for now idk if I need it. I do use adobe illustrator + 2-3 office programs + data analysis software in parallel sometimes, but I have yet to break 6 GB even once.

is dual channel worth it?

What the fuck are you using user?

I was on 2 gigs until 2 years ago and I didn't even had problems running skyrim and shit

kek
that over 80% memory bar is funny though

What if I'd like to run some VMs on top of those "intensive tasks"?
Also, "even the most intensive tasks only use 7GB" doesn't mean dick.

We wouldn't need all this RAM if webfags stopped trying to develop for the desktop. 300mb for a fucking v8 client/server, which webfags neither know nor care about, they just think "look at me I'm a a real developer too!!"

Fucking retards.

b-but that's not a power of 2!

you've never ran out of physical memory? you use like 1 tab of Sup Forums and that's it?

If you dont do anything my grandmother wouldnt do then 8gb is fine
if you dont do any multitasking then thats fine
if all you do is game,
dont do vms
dont do shit
dont wont ram disks

t. someone who was using 36 gb of ram the other day

That's what my junior coworker does. He can't even see the favicons anymore and constantly misses when I ask him to show me something. He's somehow autistic and twists his head while nervous.

also just checked, my firefox with over 200 tabs was using 5.4 GB of RAM (tfw didnt even notice, tfw dont even have to worry)

>tfw I fell for this

I with I fell for it.

this is sort of true and definitely plays a role. Just generally "software as a service", "always online" etc are eating away at it. Just look at office 2007-2010-2013-2016. Aside from integrated Bing search and MS botnet/cloud shit 2016 has literally the same functionality as 2007, except it takes up three times the disk space and two times the RAM. Less than 6 years ago 1GB ram was fine for anything like web browsing, office etc. Now 4gb is touching the low end. We have fucking phones with 4gb ram

If someone can make a working webapp I'm not even mad, at least I don't have to install anything on my PC.

>the most intensive tasks only use 7GB
lol

>64GB ram
kek, you could just run windows + all your installed software from the ram.

8 GB is fine though.

>you've never ran out of physical memory?
nope

>lel le 1 tab perhaps?
clever, keep pretending that you actually need more than 8gb, if you keep at it you might feel better about falling for the 16gb meme.

Yes definitely it will, albeit to a small degree. I forget how but basically the FSB works the dims individually and has to order them meaning there's double the cycles.
Like I said, I've forgotten exactly how but apparently less is more here in the case of speed

kill yourself stupid Sup Forums kid

How do you even live?

>haha you play gaymes!
Wew you're really on a roll today user, where do you come up with this stuff?

how to you even use 24GB? do programs just scale their use to the ram available?

KURWAAAAAA INSTALL GENTOO

tfw

I use on average 12GB and have 32 installed for VM's and Photoshop / video editing. Very much maxed out most days of the week.

kek, falling for the 8 gb meme
You only need 2 gb ddr2

Dualchannel is great. I'd say try using 2x4GB and see if it makes a difference during your work.

Usually, they say any good OS will use what RAM you have, no sense of it not doing anything, use it for cache or whatever. (Actually, this was a server, I was being a jerk anyway) however this is my work PC, not sure why my boss got it with so much RAM? Maybe he thought i'd VM or something.

Sounds like you couldn't afford it and now you're saying it's a meme. Nice justification poorfag.

>play games at ultra
>Titanfall 2 uses up 10gigs of ram by itself
>" games dont need more than 8!!!"
glad I didn't listen to shitters in Sup Forums.

Isn't even about RAMlets, it's about people lacking basic knowledge of how things work.

Oh god this so much. I hate when idiots cry that their OS uses a lots of ram... and when I tell them that free ram is actually useless, they look at me like I'm some idiot.

hold up. Did we even have ddr3 in 2009?

Think so.

just searched it up. it was released mid 2007.

2009 was the tipping point when ddr3 came down in price so it wasn't an overpriced meme compared to ddr2

and now the price (ram) has rose a substantial amount for some unknown reason.

I'm so happy that I got 4x16gb ddr4 when it was half the price

I'm glad for you. Now to wait a while until ddr4 overtakes ddr3 so as to make my new pc build.

creepy af

...

/i know, man. NiMh cells are pretty damn scary

i moved from 2GB of ram to 16GB and good lord it is amazing. I never have to close tabs again. Random programs remain open forever even after I am done using them. It is an amazing feeling really.

>using adobe reader
what year is this? 1999?

If you program java and run local vms and server you need 16gb. Other than thay ive never needed more than 8

Mfw I'm getting the same recommendations.

8 Gigs is fine but I got 16 just because people do different things at the same time. And the web is shit now.

Maybe she boots up a dedicated VM for each program for safety
