When will what operating system you use no longer matter?

When will what operating system you use no longer matter?

When there is a hardware backdoor, oh wait...

Right now... maybe something more like 7 years ago. The OS most people use doesn't matter, they all run web browsers and that's what matters.

When Windows finally conforms to Unix, the operating system standard, like every other fucking OS, and Windows/Apple/Google stop restricting people to their stifling desktop environments.
That's literally it.

When the aliens invade and force their non-gui OS on the human race.

when proprietary software is outlawed and everything is GPL by default

When the walls called "compatibility" are taken down.

When the power goes out

...

mine will get accepted by the mainstream next year. Everyone will use a linux Desktop then.

When all programs are electron-based.

TempleOS is the one true operating system

When game devs will stop using directX and windows will eventually open source their kernel. But as said, if you only do office stuff and web browing on your computer (like a good 95% of the normies), choosing between windows, mac os or GNU/Linux does not really matter

Games don't really matter if you're above the age of 12, so this is not an issue.

Alright but by the time normie normsky is 12 and supposedly grows out of games, he's been using Windows for years and probably converted his entire family to it too.

I hope this time will never come, or at least I will be dead by then.

This

>When will what operating system you use no longer matter?
That's already the case. Most applications normies use are already running on remote servers in the cloud, and accessible through your browser or portable thin/dummy clients.

Only for domain specific things, does the OS really matter. CAD, video/photo editing, music recording and gaming are a couple of things that come to mind.

Lol

This too

And it should also be added that there are serious viable attempts at "cloud gaming".

Don't think he converts his family to it, Microsoft just lucked out by making all these OEM deals with hardware vendors that ensure that virtually any x86 computer shipped out comes with some sort of Windows pre-installed.

But many normies manage to convert from Windows to macOS after some initial struggle. How to interact with your system is pretty much standardised these days, and everyone is just doing the same thing. Trying to move away from it just invokes anger from consumers, because they really don't want to do thing differently.

Just look at how many sperged out about the new start screen in Windows 8. Or how many dropped Gnome 3 when they moved away from their "classic" Gnome interface. Or how hated Unity was initially because they did thing differently.

>When Windows finally conforms to Unix, the operating system standard
>Implying they didnt use it unix just because it was convenient and familiar for 80's servermonekys, and a lot of the code was available.

>Don't think he converts his family to it, Microsoft just lucked out by making all these OEM deals with hardware vendors that ensure that virtually any x86 computer shipped out comes with some sort of Windows pre-installed.
Yeah, yeah, "muh windows is only standard because OEM preload it" is false.
Half the PC's i've seen sold in these stores either run FreeDOS, mint or ubuntu.

>these stores
What stores?

Also
>FreeDOS
lolwut

I forgot to add: While that MAY be true now, that certainly wasn't true in the 90s and early 2000s.

Also, you're forgetting that OEM doesn't only apply to stores. It also applies to schools and small businesses that buy workstations in bulk, and all these come with Microsoft Windows.

general IT and hardware stores
Here is another one.

>every store is the same as my local one

See

I'm talking some of the biggest national chains over here, not my local store.
One of them might become the biggest in South-Eastern Europe, if it manages to corner the market in neghbouring countries.

>Romanian
>relevant in any way
Go away, gypsie

>Gets shown his entire point is bullshit.
>Resorts to namecalling;
Freetards, everyone.

>When will what operating system you use no longer matter?

Used to be 'when everything runs in the browser', but that will likely never happen (thankfully).

Perhaps we will see the 'container' transition to being OS agnostic, but that would require all relevant players to cooperate, I find that unlikely, Microsoft had to improve the Linux subsystem so that they could run Bash in order to stop the developer bleeding, but they sure as hell didn't want to.

In short, don't hold your breath.

When people stop supporting Microsoft for another 20 years like brainless sheeps. Apple is worse than microsoft btw.

/thread

Doesn't matter for me.

Well in fact I'd actually rather not use windows.
t Software Dev

If you're full stack then you need to learn all OSes incl. Solaris and some busybox-only embedded OS.

When everything is OS independent.

When HaikuOS takes off

They're getting there with the Open Container Initiative, the new versions of Windows server are basically glorified docker container hosts

Anyone who has actual feelings of loyalty to an operating system or a brand of phone needs to seriously re-examine his life

It's a tool, end of story

You're a fucking retard.
