you tell me
Between this and destroying the Xbox Dev kit, yes, and that's just two separate events.
No, they're bigger retards than that.
He received a lot of stuff from the Blizzard guys, showing that they were really happy about getting their source code back and knowing there's still good people on Earth.
That guy did good.
Great, now we'll never get to see just how fucked up the Carrier and Reaver code is.
>keeping disgusting non-free software
>free trip to blizzcon
Wow he really got jewed. I would have asked for my account to be upgraded to be given all games and dlc and all future games
>tfw no FOSS Starcraft in the near future
He may have ripped the disk before returning it to the devs.
You just don't know...
Good would have been leaking the source code, user. This guy had one job and deliberately failed to do it.
I guess theoretically he could have made a copy of it, gotten his free shit from Blizz, and then be intending to leak it at some point in the future. Though that'd be pretty risky, even if he waits quite a while.
God I wish.
What's so important about starcraft source?
Can't be that complicated. Other than AI. But running a diag of 20k runs should crack it.
At least it's free as in beer now.
Fuck this would have been such a important contribution to open source games
I'll make the logo xDDDD
Can anyone give me a quick rundown of what happened, also what's the Xbox Dev kit
that's not the funny part
I am more interested about how someone lost it
Give Reddit gold instead please :^)
reddit.com
we could have had a working xbox emulator and the original developer version of halo, but some pcuck had to fuck that up
>tfw no FOSS Starcraft
wtf does that even matter?
I meant what gains from having it.
It's an RTS, not a physics engine.
>
>diag
whatever the fuck you are trying to say there.. decompiled code is an absolute fucking mess.
You have to be turbo autist dedicated to actually do something with it.
Having the actual source code gives you the naems off stuff, the names of variables, functions, and (probably) the comments so you know what everything does.
decompiled stuff just gives you garbage that links together to make a big picture.
Some from reddit came across an original xbox dev kit and it could have been used to make a workable emulator from it, but he hollowed it out and formatted the hard drives, (and then threw them out) and used it as a build case for his gaming pc.
Literal gaming history, GONE.
Microsoft destroyed all of them, nobody was sure that there were any left in existence.
>Open source games are so shit, the source code from a 20 year old proprietary game would improve it
Kek
the xbox dev kit still makes me a bit angry when I think about it.
It was stolen and probably the thief just lost the disk somewhere.
And then that guy found it...
le pc master race Sup Forumsedditors truly are cancer
en.m.wikipedia.org
We know the retarded redditor is below stage 6; The greater good was no doubt to release the code to the public.
Enlighten me as to the dev kit.
so you telling me this guy had in his hand a gold mine and he just decided to cuck it up all?
>m.wikipedia.org
read
>Fuck everything up for everyone
>But hey at least he got upboats from company bots
This is why we can't have nice things
so this nigger is the reason why i cant play ghost recon 2 on a computer?
>we could have had a working xbox emulator and the original developer version of halo, but some pcuck had to fuck that up
so many assumptions here. having access to original xbox development hardware =/= creating an emulator that can run natively on another platform. this wouldn't be very useful for developing an emulator to play *retail* titles, and there's nothing to suggest a "developer version" of Halo was stored on the machine. it's highly likely that any sensitive information would have been wiped from the machine before it ever ended up in private hands.
the guy might be stupid, but people are making this out to be a big deal when it isn't. who gives a shit about starcraft 1 anyway.
It does when Starcraft isn't officially supported on my platform.
your platform is gay
Go be 12 somewhere else.
its like you think Dolphin came out of nowhere was just a good emulator from the start because the programmers where so good
Could have sold or for a shitton of money.
Bed.
Good night.
>whatever the fuck you are trying to say there
Diagnosis. It'll give an approximation of the AI good enough to have something similar.
It's turbo autist. But not impossible.
As for everything else. I didn't think starcraft would be that complicated that you'd rather the source than hack together something yourself.
Mind you I'm not familiar with it enough.
From memory mob groupings was based on collision.
The difficult part of the game to understand how it works is enemy AI base builds and how they managed mobs. But given the age of it, bruit force should give you enough of an clue.
...
Unless this guy gave the disc to like the University of Zimbabwe, Blizzard would have sued the hell out of whoever published the source code. They've won millions of dollars just from suing people who make cheats because it violated the EULA. The community for an open source StarCraft would be pretty small anyways, it'd be dead in a few months.
You should just create an open source RTS from scratch and make the mechanics inspired by StarCraft. That way nobody gets sued and/or put in jail and you guys still get your game.
Just upload and link it anonymously.
Not rocket science.
who is talking about dolphin? the two things are not related at all, totally different architecture. plus, if you read through that shit on reddit when it happened the guy proved his dad tried to sell the thing years ago and nobody cared, where were all you whiny bandwagoning degenerates back then? nobody wanted it because it had already been wiped way before it ended up in this dude's hands and it wouldn't have been espically useful for anything other than as a collectors item.
Right, it wouldn't be as simple as just copy/paste the code and compile it and then now you have the perfect emulator.
But FUCK it would have helped so much you don't even know.
IIRC Sup Forums got the 3ds diagnosis/development cart when their warranty 3ds came back, when he returned it nintendo personally gave him a bunch of nintendo stuff
Then the people that hosted it would be guilty of a crime if they didn't take it down, and there would be a paper trail to the uploader.
Anything higher then stage 1 is pure cancer that only introduces unneeded complexity. Everybody who participate in this game sets himself up for a journey with no sight in end and peer pressure to get higher up and get cucked harder.
What is freenet.
Are you new to the internet?
We have these things called "torrents" and "usenet".
It's very easy to disseminate illegal material.
not an argument
the moment it would go online, it would be shared millions of times before Blizzard ordered a cease and desist.
so whats the story behind the dev kit thing?
not to mention, the streissand effect would lead to people downloading it and mirroring it pretty much forever just to fuck blizzard
So, somebody at Blizzard took the time to silk screen a logo w/trademark and "gold master source code" onto the disk.
Or, this is just desperate attention-whoring from within the company.
>hay, look how loyal our fans are!
>somebody got our big important golden disk of code and gave it back.
>How inspiring! Surely, you want to be a fan now.
mad as fuck
no one gives a fuck about your lame OS
It hurts, you dont wanna know.
you could literally put it on tpb and nobody could do anything about it
That wasn't me, dumbass
If the source were leaked it would end just leading to massive wide spread cheating which would ruin the game. This guy did the right thing. Y'all are suggesting he should have been a Jamal instead of giving it back. You guys are such fucking hypocrites just like Reddit.
Starcraft is already free, so who cares?
>Y'all are suggesting he should have been a Jamal instead of giving it back.
Only they have the source code already.
If the code was allegedly lost, how come Starcraft remastered 1.18 is even thing months before this? How come this just surfaced near this remaster's launch? How come he only got positive reactions out of leddit instead the XBox development kit guy?
Really empowers my cashews
Can't port a game without the source code
And people routinely get fined for using those. It's pretty fucking hard to distribute the stolen game to enough people to create a thriving online community, while also being obscure enough to avoid the law.
If you freetards really wanted this game so bad, you have TWENTY FUCKING YEARS to create an open source rip off from scratch. If the demand isn't big enough to do that, I don't think stealing the source code would have done anybody much good either.
The game is old though, doesn't matter if they would be cheating.
Hell, they already cheat, but you wouldn't know that since you don't play with other people anymore.
That's exactly what he did.
it might have if there was anything left on the drive, which according to the guy who gutted it was wiped before he ever got his hands on it. the hardware was all off-the-shelf components, only thing useful inside there would have been on the hard drive.
people are droning on and on about this shit regurgitating facts that are just completely wrong and making it out to be a bigger deal than it is. there weren't "only 50" there were over 100 of these kits made and sent out to developers, and anything resembling a finished game would have been stored on DVD's not within the 20GB drive these things were equipped with. this is a copy of the user documentation sent with the kit: cs.umd.edu
At the time that they would have been using CDs to pass source code around to people within the company, gold wasn't an unusual color to have on a writable CD. The naming is kind of neckbeard-y.
Would have been interesting to know if this was the version of Starcraft from when they were still using the Warcraft 2 engine, or if it was newer.
Yes it was :^)
Weren't almost all of the Xbox dev kits confiscated by Microsoft or something?
Holy shit, looking into this xbox thing is making me mad.
>I'll never be able to sit down on my emulator machine and play JSRF
Fuck this guy
Because only having one copy of master code is asking for trouble.
I'd be more suss if the remaster was closer tho. But the positive reaction gives it away.
A FOSS version would have working anti-cheat in 2 weeks time.
More than what Blizzard has done for it in the past 8 years.
Nigger could have pawned it online through the proper channels and made a down payment on a very luxurious home, if not bought it outright.
Probably some fat cuck who pats himself on the back "I made a huge sacrifice, but I feel good about doing the right thing", when in reality, it's plainly obvious that he's trying to rationalize his retardation.
>needing the source code to develop a cheat
>what is a reverse-engineer?
Do you also realize most "trainers" and cheat tools come from developers employed by the company?
Its a game.
It is amazing how people here barely give a fuck about all the "us only" crap the govt. is leaking all over the place - presenting a literal threat for having been planned and developed in the first place - yet, somehow, some doofus gets his hands on an obviously-labelled marketing device for a useless game and its a big fucking deal what he did with it.
Basically a redditard destroyed an extremely rare piece of hardware and wiped what could have possibly been very interesting data so he could use the devkit's mangled corpse as a case for his new computer. He posted pics of the original parts strewn across his carpet. I think only 50 of the devkits were ever made.
>tfw thread got derailed by shitters that think a 20 GB HDD + XDK box would've saved Xbox emulation
let's face it no one gives a shit about emulating the original Xbox
>He doesn't use BWAPI to code its own assist bot for perfect resource gathering and super optimized macro perfect gorilla warfare at thousand of points simultaneously
Go away brainlet
Reddit doesn't like destruction of relics, but they relish "selfless acts" such as returning lost property to their owners.
Could easily be the Reddit Bot Army though, God knows that there is a massive force of bots on Reddit that live to influence that website via upvotes.
I doubt it, but things like this do bubble to the surface when it gets in the news a lot.
Fuck you.
will i fucking want know
>one google search later
yep thats painful to look at
yup, $100 says the drives were bare, or taken out entirely.
holy shit
there are people that agree with him
and concur
fucking amazing.
Yeah, if you're retarded and don't use any sort of protection you can get fined for tormenting the wrong torrents.
I think only 1 person has ever been fined for using usenet, and that's because they were uploading 1000s of TV shows.
Someone uploading a single disk from an anonymous IP would be bulletproof.
I don't even care what was on the drive, what really pisses me off is he gutted a piece of history, filled the case with some shitty gaymur build, and threw a card reader that doesn't go with the case at all in the 5.25" bay.
Here you go bb
you know what to do
A devkit didnt include the Halo source code, to be fair.
Guy's still a fucking moron for sure
i hate gamers
He said he had the drive. 30-60gb or whatever. Thing is he plugged it into his other PC instead of booting the dev box. They use different filesystems. So 'nothing' was found.
The he proceeded to reformat it and use it for the i3 and gtx 6XX shit he threw into the box.
Wasn't an adult that did this.
>full disclosure of the inner-workings of a monumental achievement in the industry would do nothing to further the work of enthusiasts hoping to share knowledge for free
>was in fact stolen
The person who stole it must have made a copy or something.
This guy was not very tech literate. He could not have found a way to upload the source code to somewhere that it won't get taken down and he won't get sued. Giving the disc to someone else to do it is also illegal, especially if he tried to profit off of it. He acted in his rational self interest doing this.
Even then, there have been devkits that have made it onto ebay and shit before, and the drives are always bare.
>Wasn't an adult that did this.
Anyone with half a brain knows it was a dumbfuck 15yo kid just by the way he typed, no use getting mad honestly.
it wouldn't have since nobody could legally use it and blizzard could sue anybody just off the grounds that they thought someone looked at it. see: windows leaked source and reactos
i'm mad because he didn't just upload it anyway for the sake of it
