On average, about 8. And that's when I have a few interesting threads open or when I'm actively researching something.
When there's nothing going on, it's probably about 2 or so.
To answer OP's question, when I have to scroll to see any other tabs I might have opened, I bookmark them until I can work with them.
I like to work on one thing at a time, which is why I don't have a shitload of tabs open like most of you hyperactive motherfuckers with low attention spans and no organizing skills.

Usually 20-40. I have a separate window for every category of websites and Sup Forums boards. I'll need to reopen anything again when I reboot. This helps to prune unnecessary tabs if you can't even remember them.
