What's the catch? This seems too good to be true.
Who is listening.

...
I mean, isn't it supposed to be decentralized and encrypted?
How do they do it.
it means you can build interesting things when you're ok with having little to no userbase
the catch is that nobody uses it so its useless
this is the catch
Ah, so the jews really are watching.
Just wanted to make sure.
>What's the catch?
Currently to obscure to get anyone to use it.
About 8 of my friends are using it now. Momentum seems to be gaining in our little subgroup
The encryption is solid though.
Only on their server, though.
As long as you host your own, no botnet at all.
>no botnet except THE botnet
explain what this is
it's your daily dose
Is the official client still clunky?
thanks doc
I run my small business on my own homeserver. I didn't want Slack owning my data and keeping it hostage with their trend towards forcing groups to delete old logs.
The federated homeserver stuff is pretty cool.
I use the end-to-end encryption (make sure to backup your keys if you use it)
AMA
The official client is just a bundled web browser, ie. the exact same thing as Slack.
how do you back your keys?
what were the problems you encountered so far?
you export them from settings, each new device generates it's own key so you need to import keys that have access to decrypt old messages. New messages sent to you will be encrypted with your new device key included.
One problem I had was I once upgraded my homeserver and wiped my old config file that held the "macaroon" hash and it caused all my users to log out.
Unfortunately on logout the client forcefully deletes your E2E keys because of browser limitations and if it wasn't for the fact that I was using the android app as well (which gracefully allows you to save your E2E keys) I would have lost access to my previously encrypted messages.
I spoke to the devs about it and they said they'd try to make E2E export more graceful on browser/desktop client to prevent this from happening again.
To clarify when I talk about my "homeserver", I'm running the main implementation of the "Matrix" protocol (named Synapse) that Riot runs on top of: github.com
It's an open protocol and other implementations exist/being worked on.
hm I see thanks, one of the things that threw me off was the "experimental" part of e2e encryption, I guess i'll come back when its more mature.
Even if you don't use the E2E, by running your own homeserver all the data is on your server (excluding the rather complicated federated aspect which isn't enabled by default)
>I hope you're backing up your data.
>Someone's backing it up...
>It ain't you?
Riot is a web app client for Matrix, a decentralized chat network.
demonsaw.com is better for anonymous chat and filesharing
Can anyone work out does this apply when using the Riot desktop client on my own server?
Matrix uses olm, a double ratched encryption scheme.
nccgroup.trust
Has shitty interface just like every other freetard shitware
I'm pretty sure it doesn't, all of that stuff is recorded to the homeserver. If you use the default homeserver Riot provides you, all of that information is stored, yes.
Oh the caveat is federation, if someone joins your homeserver from another homeserver their homeserver will record that room's channel as long as that user is part of the room.
Think of it like email where homeservers are like mailservers communicating to each other.

I'll stick this in your ass, friend :)

Not today, fuckbucket.

hot
where did you think the data would be going?
host your own server you fucking idiot

Nothing, except one major catch for Sup Forums users.
You can't start a message with ">".
>doesn't know how to use riot
settings -> New Composer & Autocomplete (or Rich Text Editor, if you're using an outdated client) -> ctrl+m in chat to toggle text formatting
viola you can now >memearrow
Seriously, why aren't more anons using this? There are several general threads with fucking discords linked in their OPs.
Not on Android though.
isn't Riot just using Matrix? host your own shit instead to avoid the spying
or use e2e
>you send text to another site
>you expect the other site to not have access to your text
Sup Forums, stop being retarded.
matrix also supports history that's why the text is stored. e2e can be enabled though so anything stored on the server will be encrypted
alternatively just run your own server since it's free software.
no individual user volume kind of sucks
sub channels would be nice
>no individual user volume kind of sucks
I heard they are planning a rewrite of the backend to change this.
I just found out that you can join any IRC channel on several large networks from within Riot as if it was a matrix room.
Doesn't apply if you use your own server
It's no discord, but the userbase is substantial and growing. Looks like this one will succeed (for some definition of success) unlike tox and jitsi when it comes to free communication platforms.
The interface is fine, pajeet gtfo
The advanced editor is in beta so give it some time
Here is a matrix crawler bot that builds a graph of links it follows.
>Voyager is a bot that travels the network by looking for rooms it can join. When the bot sees a message with a room alias, it will try to join the room to gather more links to rooms.
matrix.org
Forgot to mention, the bot is active and you can view the graph by following that link.
because riot is built like complete shit? on android it drains battery and on the web client it doesn't work with vi controls. also encryption is a fucking mess unless you're always on the same mac address and useragent.
also the whole room idea and ui design makes the thing feel corporate. xmpp's conversations android app is comfier, less battery draining, and comfier to use. also actually has a dark theme which makes sense since its the year 2017
Riot has a dark theme, it hasn't been an issue on my android. It supports per-room coloring, which I use.
The UI design is a rip-off of Slack if anything.
There is a weechat plugin for matrix if you want a different interface. I tested it and it works.
Doesn't drain battery here. And what's the problem with encryption? Any other method is more cumbersome or less secure.
why does it say im offline since 1 day when I "online"?
