when i had android i rotated it clockwise, but now that i'm using iphone i turn it counter-clockwise so the home button is under my right thumb

Counter-clockwise, you don't have a choice, a lot of horizontally oriented apps rotate-counter clockwise only.

maybe you're spatially retarded and don't understand how to work the sensor. Or you need to fiddle with the settings in your ROM and make it faster/more responsive.
