well, basically you have to know about possible attack vectors and what attack vectors are actually used in the wild right now and how likely it is that an attack vector can be used on your machine. Many attack vectors are based on user interaction so ignoring phishing mails etc. is one thing you can do, and so on.

Of course, you won't be safe from zerodays but neither are you with patched systems. Having a hardware firewall already makes many attack vectors impossible though so you don't have to shit your pants every time a wave like now hits.
