Haven't had much personal experience with the refugees, but my teacher friend reports that the Syrian refugees coming here are actually pretty educated since they actually lived in a functional society before it collapsed. They have some backwards cultural attitudes but sound pretty well behaved overall. The African and Afghan refugees seem to have a hard time adjusting though, since they've grown up in irredeemably fucked societies and a lot of them has seen some shit.

Refugees keep coming, and cost hideous amounts of money. They are still predominantly males from Africa, rather than families from Iraq and Syria, so the term 'refugees' is honestly quite debatable.. They're just migrants.

It does though, just not the big international media, because they're not in the business of covering reality. They're in the business of pushing a narrative, and that narrative is that the current flow of refugees are all miserable sad families from war torn countries that need our love and attention... Even though in reality most are African men looking for a brighter economical future that have little to no skills and commit a disproportionate amount of crimes. They're also not eligible for asylum in 99% of cases, but they're clogging up the system so that those who DO actually have a reasonable claim to asylum have to wait for months...

hasn't affected me. probably because our government hand picked the regugees and made sure it wasn't all single men. the refugee center is next to a big shopping mall, so I've seen quite a few of them. I haven't tried talking to one, they seem like assholes desu and only speak arabic or whatever their language is. refugees aren't a problem, but the immigrants from sub-saharan africa are, they're fucking horrible.

That's a bit misleading because the vast majority of people in Dutch statistics are not refugees and are not registered as such. Look for stats concerning 'uitgeprocedeerde asielzoekers' (which most people that cannot get refugee status end up as).. They're quite a bit more likely to commit crimes.

Rotterdam has some shit neighborhoods, but it isn't all shit. I don't come there often but from what I hear it's upcoming now.. A bit hipster even. Housing is affordable, and there's a lot of hip modern stuff going on.. That said, it's one of the most multicultural cities in the country (if not THE most) and that comes with certain problems and annoyances.

The actual crisis being referred to is the syrian civil war, but a complete picture includes the fallout of the US/NATO military operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, as well as the failure of central african states due to poverty and armed conflict. The presence of refugees/migrants in Europe is not as crisis-like, but it still generates problems in regards to logistics, communication and settling, as well as more complex problems like cultural clashes, especially in the sense of competing legalities.
What's really fueling the sensational approach to the while thing is that this all coincidences with widespread disillusionment and disappointment the european working and middle class are feeling in regards to the current inequal and volatile economic system and the ceremonial nature of western democratic institutions (especially due to the EU's increasingly federalist behavior).

Haven't heard from anything on the media or online, probably because our government has either a) silenced any talks on immigrants b) has carefully picked our immigrants so they don't cause a fucking ruckus c) the Syrian refugees that my country has received aren't that bad or d) the prevalent Aussie culture of "don't care where you come from, don't act like a shit cunt" might have rubbed off on them.
Honestly, I don't feel effected by immigrants at all. I've mentioned that I live near an African community, who's parents/ grand parents were first generation refugees. Haven't committed any crimes, nice people.
