IPNS also plays a big part. When you first come back online or when you first add a node to listen to it requests the JSON file on IPNS which contains all the release info. From then on it'll listen over PubSub for new realtime releases.

Imagine you have 50 release nodes on your client, that is 50 JSON files it needs to request. When I search my database I'd rather have it search instantly. New releases on pubsub are added to your local database as soon as it gets them. If you really wanted to, you could extend on this functionality to have certain shows download as soon as they release.
PubSub is quite simple and the benefits are great, requesting all the JSON files every search would be slow and inconvenient, especially for people with trash tier internet like myself.
For a few more lines of code to add in this simple feature, I think it is well worth the time.
