CAT 9 FTW

What is this, 1998?
Why aren't you browsing Sup Forums over SMF?

This.

no standard for CAT7, but there's a CAT8 cable.

CAT7 isn't even a standard yet, just wasting money.

SFP+ 2.5/10g or CAT6a for 100m 10GbE and 2.5/5GbE.

I do.
It is a standard everywhere but the US though.

what specification body has made it a standard?

I use cat5 and cat5e because:
>My LAN isn't faster than gigabit ethernet
>My LAN is only 20 meters wide
>I don't live in a nuclear reactor
>My WAN is only at 100Mb/s, I'm not going to saturate my LAN
>CAT-5 are cheaper
I dont see why I should use placebo cables

I'm using CAT5E actually. I don't need or have anything that supports 10Gbps transfers, and don't think I will in the near future.

At the point when I do, I'll just run wires through my house again. It's only a half-day project, and will be even quicker now that I already have 5E run and can just use the existing cables to pull the new ones.

>>My WAN is only at 100Mb/s, I'm not going to saturate my LAN
???

What's hard to understand about that? His internet connection is 100Mbps.

Exactly. It's not like he's going to have 10+ devices that pull full 100mbps at the same time, so 1Gbps is more than enough.

???

Are you retarded?

??

>Be burger
>No gigabit WAN available

what is the optic alternative to ethernet cables? do they have rj45 on the end?

then what am I using?

I'm using wifi

?

I think he's saying his WAN is 100mbps because he has a 100mbps internet plan.

Unless he just uses an ancient router with only a 100mbps WAN port.

Any modern hardware should have a 1gbps WAN and LAN, regardless of service speeds.

wow finally

There is gigabit in my country for 35€, but it's not in my plan yet.

i saw earlier but figured someone else would mention it

>not using 10gigabit sfp+ DAC cables

lol that's basically the cheapest 10Gbps NIC you can buy, and from what i've seen you'll never actually achieve 10gbps in practice on those NICs.

you just have to download the windows drivers and enable jumbo frames for windows.

this card works with:
FreeBSD - Freenas / pfSense
ESXI
Windows
Linux

and its only 15 dollars a card

>Buy cat 7 cables for the hell of it.
>They come with a slip of paper saying the outer coating has lead in it.

>download the windows drivers and enable jumbo frames for windows

Still pointless for everything but local file transfers.

No residential ISP is set up for jumbo frames and you'll be limited on their end.

Not to mention the only residential internet service that would be worthwhile on that sort of setup would be Comcast's 2gbps service, and you're hardly approaching the limit of 10gbps equipment on only 2gbps.

You better stay away from a tackle box or you'll have a conniption fit.

yes but it is very good for local file transfers. you're getting 100MB/s max connecting to your NAS via 1gigabit internet. even if you use nic teaming its not as good

>Direct Attach Cable cable
>Not using a QSFP28 DAC

Are you literally gay lad

>you're getting 100MB/s max connecting to your NAS via 1gigabit internet
I've gotten a hair over 112MB/s in real world use, but you're basically right.

Still wont matter for 99% of people. 1gbps is fast enough to move a terabyte in under 3 hours.
And if you're regularly moving around multiple terabytes, you're far from a normal person.

>100MB/s over 1Gb
>No shit

1Gb = 125MB minus overhead/loss

Yes. I know. Saying you aren't getting over 100MB/s is just wrong though.

Meant to reply to the other guy (the statement that you greentexted). It seemed pretty redundant to read.

We've all seen a hell of a lot more than 20% loss over gigabit in Wangblows when it comes to NAS though.

You can do 10GbE over CAT5e up to 45m anyhow. CAT6 ups it to 55m and CAT6A for the full 100m.

I seriously can't wait for the day where 10gbps is standard.

I use CAT5e on my 10GbE network because I don't need the distance, it's cheaper and CAT5 is stranded core, not solid so more reliable too.
Ever work with CAT6A or CAT7? Freaking nightmare. It's stiff and has nylon guide wires in it to resist flexing as solid core is liable to break if you bend it. Easily 2x+ the thickness of CAT5e.

New switches are moving to 40GbE and 100GbE.

You can get a 10GbE 8 port switch for around $800 now. Check out Dlink but you get what you pay for.

Sweet, but we still need fiber landlines to reach 10gbps.

Hell, I don't even have access to 1gbit yet. I've been sitting @ 300mbps symmetric for 2 years now.

or just buy a 10gig 24 port sfp+ switch for 200 bucks.

quanta lb6m

BUT NO ONE NEEDS THOSE SPEEDS!
WE WOULD NEED 10GB DATA CAPS BECAUSE ALL THE PIPES WOULD BE CLOGGED!

Not browsing over WiFi
You need to throw away your wires grandpa

how much gold I can salvage from it?

My home network I use Cat 5E/6. Really only times I push the full 1GB is during server backup jobs. Mostly it's limited to 100 Megabit due to my streaming media device (s). My Wifi devices are limited to G/N so they don't even hit the 100 Meg limit. Internet is 10 meg d/1mb up.

Being stranded or solid is independent of the category rating. Solid core is structural, so flexing it around to plug into your Mum's laptop isn't the point. You can get stranded 7a patch cables for that purpose if you wanted.

Also
>what is NEXT, PS-NEXT, return loss, attenuation, acr, and ELFEXT
Being a short distance doesn't necessarily excuse using shit cables when running at high speeds.

Sure, Cat6+ >cables< themselves somewhat of a meme, but the connectors aren't. Good termination DOES matter.

>being portable
>accepting insane vulnerability to your network
get out

No, I'm just stealing WiFi from a resident where I work. Guest portal that doesn't block UDP over 53

is using cat6a better than cat5e for wired ethernet to my pc

In theory yes, but actually it doesn't really matter

I actually am, but only because the cable was free.

Pretty much this

redundant
here's a second (you)

Doing large data restore will be a pain in the ass if I ever have to do it over 1GB eithernet. I've got roughly 9TB of data backed up via drive image so to restore it all would take days. It's all backed up to a nas and external usb 3 drive. Yeah I know that it's a relatively painless process, just tell the program to restore to new volume and walk away but still, that's several days with out my vids or porn.

A proper alternative to ethernet probably shouldn't have rj45 on the end since it's a copper interface

Fake news

Possibilities
1. Using pirated Speedtest Custom to test your own internal network
2. MS Paint
3. Good for you

>3. Good for you
thanks

I got my laptop hooled up to the Cat7 cables and my monitor to my 4k HDTV with gold-played HDMI cables B-)

*shakes fist*

>paying this much money to shitpost on Sup Forums

Yeah but mine are the wifi variant

Don't put it in your butt then you homosexual

:^)

Top meowline cables

>tfw the router my ISP sent me this year is only 100mbps @ 2.4ghz

I want to get a new one but anything around 1gbps is usually $400+ here

Thats crazy, mine provides an AC1750 router.

like many (probably) said this before: my internet is too slow to care about such things

Yeah it's pretty awful, you'd think they'd at least give me a good router considering the monthly bill is $150

If you're interested it's the Huawei hg568. Piece of junk.

hey can you tell me how you got all those sick discounts? I'm looking into getting fiber.

LMAO 2 CAT7

in return i'll give u some art

Verizon is just giving them away right now.

Right now they've got even better deal for new customers. $89.99 a month for Gigabit + TV + Phone for 12 months, then another 12 months at $94.99 a month, and then another 12 months at $99.99 a month.

And it's only a 2 year contract so you can cancel whenever you want after it's at $99.99 a month.

oh i thought they were some type of student discounts

How long is that one anyway?

Nope, just standard shit.

I have seen someone paying as little as $29.99 a month for the same service though.

$160 a month discount.

For me personally it was $124.99 a month for JUST gigabit, or $94.99 a month for Gigabit + TV and Phone.

Pretty sure they just want to boost TV subscription # for the quarter.

interesting...
they're promoting gigabit in my area for $70/month.

Is their router+modem mandatory? I have my own shit.

thx for the info btw

They put new modern DSL internet lines on my street, but now that people start using I'm hearing from a friend down the road that it's unstable and slow in the evenings (shared medium but it's not cable).

So do I
- continue with a stable 12 mbit line?
- switch to a shitty 50 or 100 mbit line?

Sucks ass

>95 burger money for gigabit internet
Holy shit

It depends, technically for service, no it isn't needed, however the online configurator will occasionally force you to either buy one, or rent one for $10 a month.

I'd recommend just buying one from them if it forces you to, it's $150 (15 months worth of rental) so for a 2 year contract you still save $90 over the 2 year period by just buying their router.

You only need their router for trouble shooting through their tech support, if you're tech savvy you can hook up whatever router you want. Even custom PFsense boxes are fine.

...

That's more reasonable.

HOW?

Yeah, but he's 1 in 50,000. The only reason he has that discount is because the system fucked up giving him the discounts. Fucked up in his favor.

They might eventually notice and do something about it. But unless he changes his plan, the price should stick for awhile. I've even seen them just leave it permanently if they never change the contract.

Ah well, good for him. The lowest you can normally get it for is $69.99.

I'd at least try the 50 or 100mbps plan.

You should have 30 days to cancel your plan without any termination fees, so use the service for 2-3 weeks and decide if it's going to be stable enough for you.

If not, sign back up with the 12mbps stable shit.

Hell they might even lower your price to get you back after leaving them for a month.

Good thing I live in Europe then.

I almost bought one but then I realized it was made in Israel.

From what I've read, the only thing their router/modem is for is so you can use the guide on the cable box.
