I thought openbox+tint2 as a lightweight meme died with crunchbang linux.

There's no reason to not use xfce in 2017, it's the only cohesive desktop environment that isn't wasteful as fuck, plus, it plays nice with i3 if you're still into that sort of thing.

I was a holdout on IceWM for many years until I tried Ubuntu 6.06 and realized I could configure Gnome2 to be just as clean and even better.

Prior to that I was an olvwm holdout because of Sun nostalgia. Save yourself the trouble and just get a nicely integrated env.
