I don't think tape is enough to keep VHS tape from separating in the event of a splice due to the speed that the play head spins at. I could be wrong...but there are easier ways of doing this. Two VCRs and dubbing.

Oh one time one of my friends in senor year of high school got pissed off one of the teachers failed him and that he couldn't walk across the stage, such a trivial thing looking back on it considering he is in med school now, so supposedly he puts CP from/b/ on the teacher's computer. I collect VHS and sometimes the tapes snap or get unattached on one end during rewinding. For the snapped ones tape seems to work just fine.

VHS guy here. Not at the moment, but I have thought about it. Not like it would be expensive or anything, just a bit time consuming. Large part of my collection is of course mainstream stuff, for which much better copies already exist.

if you set it up on a spare machine/laptop, you only need to swap out tapes once every ~1.5-4 hours, depending on content and tape type (apparently you can get up to 10 hour LP tapes, but i only ever used up to the 2/4 hour (sp/lp) tapes)
as for transcoding, those can be batched so it's just set and forget
wasn't really uncommon to have more than one VCR in a household by that point in time

np, probably the hardest part will be dealing with interlacing
i highly recommend QTGMC (with avisynth or vapoursynth) as a deinterlacer, it's slow but the results are amazing
thankfully you can just record interlaced and deal with that later
you could opt to just not deinterlace at all, but nothing these days uses interlaced displays, so one way or another the content will be deinterlaced before display, progressive (non-interlaced) is just easier to work with/use now
