I heard a different story, this time from the guide at that well the "blinded" soldiers washed their eyes. Apparently it's historically contested whether they had their eyes taken out. The most likely theory is that the romei blinded them with some sort of chemical, and they washed their eyes in this "miraculous well" and regained their sight. Who knows.

Perhaps our historians support the blinding story because it's less humiliating than the truth, which could as well be that Samuil got a heart attack cos he watched his wife cuck him.
