>Nonfree software installed
It's like you want stallman to have another sperg out.

Non-free software.

Name a better distro.

debian

How is it non-free?

I'm using xubuntu and I'm very happy.

Ubuntu provides specific repositories of nonfree software, and Canonical expressly promotes and recommends nonfree software under the Ubuntu name in some of their distribution channels. Ubuntu offers the option to install only free packages, which means it also offers the option to install nonfree packages too. In addition, the version of Linux, the kernel, included in Ubuntu contains firmware blobs.

The “Ubuntu Software Center” lists proprietary programs and free programs jumbled together. It is hard to tell which ones are free since proprietary programs for download at no charge are labelled “free”.

Ubuntu appears to permit commercial redistribution of exact copies with the trademarks; removal of the trademarks is required only for modified versions. That is an acceptable policy for trademarks. The same page, further down, makes a vague and ominous statement about “Ubuntu patents,” without giving enough details to show whether that constitutes aggression or not.

That page spreads confusion by using the misleading term “intellectual property rights”, which falsely presumes that trademark law and patent law and several other laws belong in one single conceptual framework. Use of that term is harmful, without exception, so after making a reference to someone else's use of the term, we should always reject it. However, that is not a substantive issue about Ubuntu as a GNU/Linux distribution.

>3.x kernel

Is it a good way to start though?

>not using debian testing or unstable

So, what should I use instead?

Gentoo >>>> Ubuntu >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Arch

a normie would be afraid of that. Ubuntu is perfectly fine for normies

Mint is the best way to start anyway so Ubuntu can go into the trash. Maybe one-day you can get a arch deluxe like us grown-ups

stretch out tomorrow
also
>he doesn't use zen kernel for his homestation
kys

and a good endgame, you don't have to distro hope if you're from debian.

Any of these distro's. I reccomened Trisquel GNU/linux

gnu.org/distros/free-distros.en.html

Or debian with only the man repo.

But Mint is based on ubuntu.

...

The best version of Gnu/Linux (distrobution, that is,) is slackware.
Please spread the word

What?

Vocal minority.
Ubuntu is used in a lot of places.

Because people have so little to do and have such fragile egos, they have to spend time ridiculing of a Linux distribution.

I've been trough a lot of different distributions. Ubuntu is great. Running it right now on two laptops and a server.

And Ubuntu I based on Debian. What's your point?

so, people like you don't like ubuntu for political reasons and don't give a shit that canonical wants it to be a distro that works on most hardware and is usable by normies. no wonder that linux won't take off since retards like you value "muh, non-free" over technical superiority.

t. ubuntu user

but what's wrong with this opinion?
You'll never ever realize complete freedom related to software. Not even close. Normies give a shit about freedom.

where?

Canonical wants to be Microsoft/Apple lite and roll in the money while having the facade that they aren't the same shit, different brand.
FTFY

t. Not a retard cuckbaby like you.

almost any

>Canonical wants to be Microsoft/Apple lite and roll in the money
by not selling anything to endusers? wew lad!

nothing's wrong with the option, but it's arrogant to name a distro shit because they maybe offer a non-free wifi driver that will probably convince someone to try linux instead of sticking with windows.

my college uses it as a go-to Linux distro. So did every school I attended

also Ubuntu is probably the most popular distro among normies tired of MS bullshit, along with Mint

Ubuntu sucks because its too mainstream and not Arch

because normies can't remember its name

obango
ububu
obanto
ubundo
obama
obobo

arch is mainstream as fuck you filthy casual scriptkiddy

At this point I'm pretty sure AIX sucks less than this piece of shit.

Honestly why I use it.

its used by Google. also someone posted a video here of some korean cyborg shit where they were using ubuntu. I believe Nasa uses ubuntu for some stuff too, but I think nasa uses everything anyways.

Funny. My school's goto Linux distro is Fedora.

Because the company that owns it is sketchy as fuck. They once noticed they had most of the GNU/Linux users so they tried to replace Linux with their own kernel, turning Ubuntu into a non GNU/Linux OS. They also added adware and other garbage to the distro.

>obama
IoI

>.jpg
>2.33 fucking megabytes

please kill yourself and pay me back the minute it took me to load this crap on my slow-ass connection

It's not >muh sikrit kblu XXdDD enough for Sup Forums manchildren.
Plus according to (((RMS))) you shouldn't be free to use closed source software.

>fidget spinner in logo
>installing fad distro

t. ubuntu shill

Nice counter argument you've got there freetard.

>Free=bad
This is what ubuntufags actually believe.

You must be the kind of kid that thinks communism works, do you?

No

Then explain how forced collectivization (GPL software) can produce anything worthwhile.
Moreover, explain why I shouldn't be free to use closed source software.

No

As expected, freetards are complete brainlets.

No

ugly name

Vague and poorly thought out reasons on account of Sup Forums and what they like

"It's simple" so it must be less useful. Harder to use = harder to use for a purpose, except not

"It resembles MacOS", because MacOS is something I don't like and this resembles it so I must also not like this

"Botnet", because the built-in DE also searches the web for results when you look something up. It's not clear how this is supposed to be different from just using Google normally

Sup Forums is fickle but not particularly smart

>Sup Forums - Technology
Sup Forums is all about pretending to be tech literate. So let's be honest - Sup Forums hates Ubuntu, because you can't claim to be technically clever by using it.

the vocal minority is simply that

those who bitch and moan are very very loud about it

the majority just get on with what they need to do

Because they've dropped Unity.

>Sold out to Microsoft

1. It used to ship with amazon spyware by default. Although you could disable it and uninstall, it still caused a shitstorm among linux users. It was removed after a year, in 15.x or 16.04, I believe.
2. Unity is buggy sometimes. It's still very usable and honestly it's UI is the best as it's compact as fuck. There's no reason to hate Ubuntu because it's main flavour is Unity. It's possibly the best DE.
3. Cannonical wasted too much time on making the DE when they could have just maintained addons for GNOME. And, they've now abandoned the Unity DE and will return back to GNOME, which is also "bandwagon hated" ever since GNOME 3.
4. It received a bandwagon hate after it changed from GNOME 2 to Unity as a default DE. People still hate it because it's popular to hate it.
5. It's popular and good, therefore people should hate it. Right? The loudest Ubuntu haters are also those who hate other easy to use distros like Mint, and think installing arch makes them a hacker.

There is better for:
>Customization
>Bleeding Edge
>Init freedom (yes this too)

I lost interest after unity started sending local searches (files on the computer) to amazon

Because it was a viable competitor out of the morass of hobbyist and neckbeard distros. A better server OS than Redhat, a better desktop than Windows.

Ubuntu is a secure and stable system and anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about.

>Linux Foundation
>Its funding comes primarily from its Platinum Members: Cisco Systems, Microsoft, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, Intel, NEC, Oracle, Qualcomm, and Samsung and for many years Hitachi.[79] These nine each having a representative on the Board of Directors, they hold a majority on the 16-person board

Canonical has done more for making Linux mainstream than any other company. Hater's gonna hate.

>Linux
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Mark Shuttleworth's success got to his head and he stopped listening to the community and started forcing things on people and ignoring them

>ubuntu
>still can't release an OS in 2017 without screen tearing
>have to edit config file to get rid of mouse acceleration that's on by default
I mean for fucks sake ubuntu was great on T420 even got like 2 hours 30 min of battery life out of a 700+ cycle 6 cell but it is garbage on my haswell based desktop

Bullshit. Autistic screeching from entitled neckbeards isn't community feedback. Shuttleworth pays the bills he calls the shots. If you don't like it fuck off to Debian.

>implying normies didnt also cry for gnome 2 to come back because it was "simpler and easier to use"
looks like you dont even know whats going on m8

Haha fuck off dickhead, what a load of shit that also totally ignores the fact that you can run ANY desktop you want on Ubuntu with one command. I'm running Mate now on my FreeBSD destap but I sure miss Unity. Which leads me to the REAL cancer and community disconnect: systemd.

Fuck Redhat, they have done more to destroy Linux than any arbitrary desktop complaint.

>try debian testing this year
>launch disk creator
>the whole interface is missing
wew lad
I also remember some time ago gparted constantly crashing on it rofl

this. but i think unity has it's rightful place and is way better than gnome 3.

I'm using Ubuntu as my first distro right now.

communism does work.

...

(in theory)

>Let's take Debian
>okay
>And add a huge bloated awful UI
>...okay?
>Also let's fuck with the core system a lot
>Fucking why
>AND LETS MAKE EVERYTHING UBUNTU SPECIFIC PACKAGES!

I can't play all Steam games like Fallout 4

Communism does work, it just kills millions of people to be stable.

>Microsoft and goggle subscribes to the foundation
>MS does this because they have to maintain .NET core
>Somehow this is called selling out

>Ubuntu comes installed with Windoze
>This is not being sold out

Linux isn't the privacy solution you think. It is spying on you too.

...

no, in scandinavia too. they're just opting to label themselves socialist because it was easier to stay in the NATO that way.

I had a bad experience with Ubuntu in middle school when I first tried to use it. I hated how it was so UI-heavy, but you still absolutely needed to use the terminal and run sudo.
Years later I try Linux again with Arch and fall in love with how very little illusions it has about trying to help you out.
Now I have a fondness of small *nix systems.

Right in your ass.

>claims ubuntu is buggy
>recommends even buggier unstable plebian
fucking hate this place i;m out. i swear Sup Forums is better then you.
bb fat neckbears virgins

it boils down to:
>muh freedumbs
>elitists who think they're better for wasting their time in the commandline who despite being "better" have egos like a china plate and don't want the normies to realise that what they're doing can be done by anyone able to read a bit of documentation
>muh politics
>valid complaints about the bugs in the software (i haven't experienced as many but they're certainly there)
>people who don't appreciate their collusion with companies like amazon,MS, etc

it works not even then.
>holodomor
>soviet famine
>big leap ahead
>cultural revolution
it killed hundered of millions of people and still missed it's goal.

Gentoo

Unity gave me eye cancer.
Started connecting users to the amazon botnet and stealing their personal info
Installs proprietary software unless explicitly asked not to.

Manjaro XFCE is the only answer to the distro question.

Manjaro

It's just Debian with niggers.

No fucking thanks, the geniuses in charge can't even renew a cert

Manjaro was the most unstable distro I ever used, and I had it on 3 different computers. Xubuntu runs fast and smooth, and any problems are very easily fixed.

As someone who used Manjaro for about a year: Antergos does everything Manjaro does, better.

Installation froze for me at the very start, so I just turned to Xubuntu.

This is probably the best way I've ever seen to describe Ubuntu.
