So they make their money from both investors and selling user data. They parse everything you say into text, and sell it to advertisers.
IRC only allowed communities to create single channels. Discord has the notion of "servers" which is really just a group of channels. Also it has a web client which makes joining channels a lot easier. Everything else about it is pure shit though - logging is nonexistent and it's impossible to find old messages unless you screencapped it at the right moment.

It's popular because it's simple to set up, free, intuitive, and fairly high quality. What do you think could possibly compete with that in a userbase that doesn't care about FOSS or privacy as long as the software works well?
