Most laptops use DDR3 because it saves money. Also the MBP doesn't just use DDR3 it uses something called LPDDR3 which is more special than a normal laptop.

Apple doesn't use DDR3 they use something called LPDDR3, its their proprietary RAM that is 100 times more durable than normal ram and runs cooler.
