First for the Queen's speech!

Release the ISO already! Don't keep us waiting.

What DE/WM will you use on Debian 9?

XFCE4 has everything i need.

Windows 10, Windows 10

Aptitude shows 2561 upgradable packages and 3 security upgrades.

My PC runs out of RAM when aptitude checks dependencies.

Help?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

i3wm of course!

This.

why is that funny?

Why what the fuck

download more ram

Debian is like not having sex for a long, long, long time, then all of a sudden, the best sex ever.

Sorry if you find this difficult to relate to, anons. Maybe you'd prefer Arch, which is like fapping every day.

Because Lxde is way superior on every aspect and doesn't have a FUCKING HAMSTER as a logo.
GOD i fucking hate Hamsters

>He doesn't know about KDE's comeback

IDK, user. KDE has ostensibly better software. If you had to choose between Dolphin and Thunar, it should be an obvious choice.

XFCE is better.

What is the equivalent of never having had sex and then realizing that you never will have sex? That is all I know and I would like my computing experience to feel the same way.
Gentoo?

Use apt.

Gentoo

Why not?

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get check
apt-get autoclean

It's a fucke up sitation, using apt-get gives me no problems and it wants to download andinstall the packages it can.

aptitude doesn't stop resolving dependencies and keeps using RAM (I had it up for ~3 hours and it was using ~12G). Never completed that.

What should I do? Is there really any value to upgrading if I just shitpost, listen to music and watch movies?

I'm not a babby, please.

see

>not running unstable

Stop being a fag and just use apt-get for Christ's sakes.

.......WHAT IF IT FUCKS UP MY SYSTEM

KDE is the most technically superior DE in the world, but it doesn't have any good themes.

Now ask yourself, what's more important: Technical superiority, or themes?

I think you'll understand why we have to reject KDE.

>Being a tripfeg

Uhh, why did you think aptitude wouldn't where apt would? I'm pretty sure they would both be fine. Barring the usually problems doing a dist upgrade can lead to.

Perhaps you should be more skilled at fixing problems, user, because aptitude is gonna do the same shit if you built an incredibly convoluted system in the first place.

At this point, you should have installed Gentoo, but you ignored all the warnings. Now Hell is raining down on you, motherfucker, and the Heavens are shaking.

You could have listened, but you didn't, and now you're paying the price. Your existence is God's greatest failure. I can only hope that you learn you lesson and study this operating system more carefully, and crawl back up to purgatory once again, a redeemed man.

installing now....why wait???

output when i run
aptitude full-upgrade

hastebin.com/efedoqixik

output when I run
apt-get upgrade

hastebin.com/ameqacalaf

Cinnamon, because I'm a Windows user.

Forget apt-get. Try apt.

apt update
apt dist-upgrade

>hastebin.com/ameqacalaf
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo reboot
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo stop-being-a-faggot --user me

yeah I agree with you KDE is-

*the whole system crashes*

Brother, let me tell you something. Many a day I have lumbered here by this fence and looked at this world. These fences which border this small plot of mud seem to be the edges of the Earth. But I have gazed many beyond the fence. I have watched the hills of green and the tall, slim, terrifying figures who lurk and haunt the strange barn on the far side of the hill, who appear as spectres as the sun rises at the break of day and refill the Oats, and float away without a word. Often I wonder why we are not like them, why we cannot give ourselves the oats, why we are limited and chained down by the girth of our bodies and the uselessness of our hooves. And indeed for many years this sad truth, that forever we would be trapped in this shallow frame , alone, and without purpose or direction, banished forever to wallow in our own filth, this depressed me. But yesterday I realized something. Who are we to be ungrateful for existence in the first place? Who are we to say that this life is not good enough? Instead of oblivion we have the warmth of the sun and the coolness of soil. We have fair conversations and a good night's sleep. Who am I to say that these simple comforts are no better than death? Should we not smile like the sun and bask in our happiness as the sunlight warms the soil without question or thank. So brother, let us share oats and smile and frolick as much as our girth might let us. Let us see this pen not as a prison or a hell but as a palace in which we might enjoy the best our existence has to offer. Give me some oats brother, and let us dine together. I love you.... my own flesh and blood, my brother.

Does this even check for dependencies?

WHAT IF IT FUCKS UP MY SYSTEM

WHY THE FUCK DOES APTITUDE CHECK FOR DEPENDENCIES FIRST AND APT-GET DOES NOT

>not upgrading via apt

>The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
>Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
I said use apt, not apt-get.

>WHAT IF IT FUCKS UP MY SYSTEM

>WHY THE FUCK DOES APTITUDE CHECK FOR DEPENDENCIES FIRST AND APT-GET DOES NOT

>WHY THE FUCK DOES APTITUDE CHECK FOR DEPENDENCIES FIRST AND APT-GET DOES NOT
Apt-get is the package manager for those who live on the edge

hastebin.com/gikukatexo

Hence why I called him a pansy faggot. DEBIAN IS NO SAFE HAVEN. YOU SHALL ALL EXPERIENCE THE STRESS OF DEPENDENCY HELL.

IT'S JUST A MATTER OF WHEN

I said apt dist-upgrade, not apt upgrade.

>caring for your system is somehow autism

Then wat's the safest? Synaptic?

What if I refuse to use my system?

hastebin.com/hagogirisu

what does xfce have to do with kde?

they both have an 'e' at the end

Let me guess: no swap?

Create a swap file and proceed.

>Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
Yes.

If it all goes to shit, you can just download Debian 9 and get a fresh start.

So does GNOME, but I wouldn't touch that with a ten-foot pole.

I have a 16G swap, 8G physical.

>If it all goes to shit, you can just download Debian 9 and get a fresh start.
how about no? My system is just comfy right now and it's the weekend.

This, MATE.

Stretch is going to be my first foray into Linux -- how hard would it be to transfer a VM made in VirtualBox on one computer (my desktop) to the physical drive on another computer (my laptop)?

Does it make any difference if you run upgrade, reboot and then dist-upgrade to get the held back packages?

Since you're not going to do anything then you might as well leave.

This was the wrong thread for you anyway, since your posts have nothing to do with counting down until Stretch's release.

Just make a fresh installation and copy your configs over.

How the fuck are you exhausting 24GB memory with aptitude? Maybe you need to close all the gay porn tabs you have open in chrome before proceeding with upgrade.

How unstable is Debian Sid? Was thinking of upgrading from testing to unstable, but it has a really ominous name.

I have tried to do a lot, but I'm not going to do something that's gonig to take too much time.

I had it open for three (3) hours and it just happened.

I closed all the trap threads and BBC tabs, and then started. it was like ~300 Mb.

I was planning on deleting a bunch of shit and maybe installing some extra shit -- I suppose I will just keep track of that stuff in a txt file.
Thank you.

>reboot
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH

the fucking purple octopus is shit tier, jessie is fucking hotter
I want to fuck the red haired bitch so bad

Very

>reboot

How did you fix the screen tearing?

why would you use a 4.4 LTS kernel on a desktop?

WHERE IS THE FUCKING ISO

also is the nonfree edtion going to be out today as well?

>nonfree edition
just use microsoft® windows®

stop baiting people, man. You can use windows if you like, but shilling all over doesn't help gain users.

why the fuck isn't this stickied

mods wtf are you doing

Gnome.

Who here /not installing/

Yeah fuck people with Intel wifi drivers amirite.

try installing a compositor

because he downloaded it from the windows store

Me, since apt / apt-get does not find new updates.

Do I need to modify the /etc/apt/sources.list somehow?

depends, what does it look like right now?

And are you using the sources.list.d folder for anything

It won't be ready till about midnight UTC or thereabouts.

So if you're in the US, you should get it this evening at some point, depending on where you are.

reddit.com/r/debian/comments/6hshyw/debian_9_stretch_release_day_is_today/

>2017
>using Debian
are you suicidal, by chance?

I think I just need to replace any "jessie" with "stable" at this point.

deb ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
deb-src ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

deb security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

deb ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free

Every time someone mentions Debian, I do remember Deb and Ian and it makes me sad

"stretch" will also work just fine.

After that, it's apt update, apt upgrade, apt dist-upgrade, in that order, and hope youi don't have too many custom shit installed that can make a mess for the update scripts.

sup bros

anyone else boot their debian into a compressed ramdisk?

>those gains
*flex*

The name sounds really good. I really wish I didn't know the meaning. Most distros have ridiculous sounding names and debian is boss if you disregard the meaning.

Thank you user, I'll try this. I just changed to "stable" but it doesn't change anything, I'm guessing the repos aren't updated yet, since the official site reports the current stable release to be Jessie, still.

Apparently it is not advisable to change it to stretch since you'll get a frozen 1 week old testing repo not the actual stable. Stable is better.

Stop it user, just stop! T_T

>These feels..
@3@

won't be updated for a few hours.

change to stable and type "apt update"
this updates apt/itudes sources

openbox

I like a minimal DE which I build up

SID stands for Suicider In Denial

nonfree iso when?

Probably next few days, could be sooner. They don't announce the release of the non free ISO so you'll have to keep checking.

Is there any release parties in the midwest?

I want to Lan party and share GPG keys.

Maybe even hack together a program or fix a bug.

REEEEE
DELETE DISSS!!!

GNU GPL LIBRE PURE!!!

DEBIAN HAS STANDARDS
REEE!

Shame it's kernel 4.9. Was hoping I'd be able to switch all my machines to Debian.

The nonfree iso isn't a standard part of the release and can be released at any time, if at all. It very likely won'd be released when Stretch goes stable.

You can of course download the nonfree testing iso, which is currently the same thing, and then just switch your sources to point to stable after the release.

You could also do a normal install and enable the nonfree repos afterwards.

Is there a way to upgrade from Kali to Debian using apt? I made a horrible, horrible mistake.
